How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:44

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

We spend about £800 a month on Sainsbury’s, Coop top ups and a few COOK meals a week.

We don’t economise at all - I could definitely reduce the bill but my DH is food obsessed.

Merryoldgoat · 20/04/2022 22:35

2 kids and 2 adults.

Ohwellnevermindthen · 20/04/2022 22:36

We spend about 110 pw in Aldi and maybe another tenner a week in top-ups and sometimes a tenner for a bottle of wine from the local offie.

I usually go to savers or poundshop and spend about £20 to buy random bits for the house that you don't get in Aldi, like dishwasher salt and carpet deodoriser.

Dog food not in weekly shop is another £40-£50 a month.

I'm guessing all in £130-150 a week for 2 adults, two kids (one which can eat through a full fruitbowl in three days) and a medium sized dog. Youngest is still in nappies, so would save about 5-8 quid a week once they go. The weekly amount seems far too much to me, but I see it is fairly typical on here.

We do always have quite full cupboards (small kitchen) as I can over buy some weeks, but there is a part of me that likes to run with a bit of a surplus as I'm a worrier.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 22:37

@RewildingAmbridge I buy my kindling from Amazon. It's a big box of eco friendly little balls. Lasts months and is about £20 per box. If your DH likes Brewdog it's cheaper buying a box direct from them. I buy direct from Brewdog for my business.

@Noglassjustthebottleandastraw I'm with you, 3 adults and spend £170 a week. It covers everything, food, alcohol, toiletries, cleaning products, laundry products, kitchen kit. No top-ups, packed lunch for uni, DH & I work from home. No pre-made meals, mostly batch cook and cook from scratch, 2 bottles wine a week & 1-3 beers. Also very rarely have Deliveroo.
Honestly don’t see how it can be cut much and I do think that some people don’t realise what they spend on top-ups, laundry/cleaning products and toiletries etc.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 22:33

@Soresoresore I spend £10 on each bottle of wine. I buy 2 bottles.

That’s not bad!
Maybe you could buy the basic household stuff from cheaper shops?
on the odd occasion I have bought everything from Tesco/Sainsburys I’ve spent loads. People think M&S is expensive but I think it’s on a par with T&S.
M&S near me always has loads of yellow sticker items (meat etc) Brilliant for the freezer.

Irishfarmer · 20/04/2022 22:40

I spend approx €100 so £80 for 2 adults. That is all meals/ snacks/ cleaning products. I get Tesco delivered and go to the butcher every 2/3 weeks no top up shopping.

Are you spending a lot on alcohol? We don't buy any. Or maybe a lot of branded products you could swap for own brand?

Irishfarmer · 20/04/2022 22:43

Sorry I read all you other posts. I don't know then you're not spending a lot on alcohol and buying own brands. Do you have much waste?

Also we eat meat every dinner, DH would think something was wrong if we didnt.

flipflopping · 20/04/2022 22:43

Absolutely loads, to the point where I’d be embarrassed to say it on a thread like this. A fair amount of that is on booze (expensive tastes rather than excessive amounts).

Itawapuddytat · 20/04/2022 22:47

2 adults, 1 teenager, 1 child and 1 cat, about £125/week, including the odd bits and bobs bought during the week if bread runs out etc. It's usually Lidl+either Morrisons's or Tesco, and also milk delivered twice/week. But we barely drink any alcohol.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 22:49

@flipflopping I understand. Some weeks I can be higher than the amount I said in my op. If I buy nice cheese, nibbles, champagne. We do love eating healthy and well.

@Irishfarmer we do eat meat most meal times. No waste as I use it up.

@BrightYellowDaffodil I did try Aldi before but found the food went off quickly. Will check the wine out though.

2 Adults, 1 Teen 2x under 6.
£100PW shop at Aldi, No top ups.
Pets £25 pm.

AReallyUsefulEngine · 20/04/2022 22:58

We spend £200-£250pw for 2 or 3 adults and 3 DC for all food, toiletries and cleaning products. It includes some free from products too.

@Incessantnamechanger Will you post an example shopping list for £50 for a week for 6 of you because I don’t see how it is possible.

nannybeach · 20/04/2022 22:58

These threads are really annoying. Identical one last month. If you've got the money and you want to spend it fine. Two adults now,2 dogs their dry food purchased in bulk. £50 cook from scratch,in bulk partly for the freezer. Disabled son who has ridiculous low benefits. Basic pension for me,so some of the shopping amounts are far more than my weekly pension. A medium chicken does do 3 meals. Couldn't care less if people don't believe this.

Sure will do. I will dig one out.

UndertheCedartree · 20/04/2022 23:08

I think reading your updates it's just all the 'extras' you buy every week that add up. 2 bottles of wine, 3 packs of crisps, 2 packs of pet treats, spray and wipes every week and also lots of meat.

I only spend £60 a week because I buy a bottle of wine maybe 4 times a year, a packet of crisps only if a birthday,/Christmas, pet treats - maybe a pack every couple of months, a bottle of spray every 3 months. We don't eat meat so most of our food is veg, beans, tofu, lentils, nuts, and some cheese, yogurt and fruit. Cereal and milk for DC, bread and peanut butter for teen!. Few treats for them from Aldi - cereal bars, chocolate biscuits etc. Pasta and rice bought in large quantities.

AlistairCamel · 20/04/2022 23:12

£80/week for two adults and three small chickens

AlistairCamel · 20/04/2022 23:12

Children! Not chickens.

UndertheCedartree · 20/04/2022 23:13

I do find it funny when people say I can't get my food bill down. I can't put my food bill up (despite rises in food costs) as I simply can't afford it! When you have more money, you tend to spend more is all it amounts to.
