How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:44

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

I'd say spend 200-250 a week, family of 8, baby on formula. Mostly Asda but do a bulk buy at costco every couple of months.

Chely · 20/04/2022 21:41

Oh and no booze

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 20/04/2022 21:41

Two adults, three cats and a dog and ours is probably around £80-£100 on average - but that includes everything from food, to toiletries, to cat litter, dog treats and poo bags.

For just the humans I would say it's around £70 a week. We could cut it down further if needed though.

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2022 21:45

Around £250. 5 of us, dh and I, 17 and 16yo dds and a 10yo ds.
we use ocado for the main shop which comes to about £150, then the butchers for the meat. Add in a couple of trips to the shops for forgotten items and dinner money for dd2 and it’s about £250.
happy spending it but could cut back if needed.
You’re not ‘doing anything wrong’ if you’re happy spending it.

Duchess379 · 20/04/2022 21:47

3 adults & 3 dogs. Been to Tesco today & spent £70. Normally spend about £55 in Aldi..

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 21:49

@Babyboomtastic the wine costs maybe £10 each bottle and I do buy a couple of steaks.

@Butterflymosaic I think you are right some veg meals would make a difference. We do buy a lot of meat. Mince, diced beef, steak, chicken.

We spend around 450-500 over a month for 2 adults and 3 children. I shop online with ocado, asda and sainsbury. I change it up to get our usual items on offer. I would say you spend a lot.

Whycantibetangy · 20/04/2022 21:53

Honestly, I call bullshit on some of these really low amounts. “Oh I spend £3.52 and feed 2 adults, 6 kids, 12 cats and a parakeet”

meal planning is your friend- be strict with your shop and only buy what you really NEED not what looks tasty/on offer/almost running out.
dh prides himself on doing a weekly shop for£80. Problem is we run out after 4 days.
Usual amount for 2 ad 2 teens 3 cats is about £120 all in with a Lidl/Tesco shop

Nsky62 · 20/04/2022 21:53

My max is £40 cat and i, tho I tend to shop as I need, been less lately, mainly Aldi

Profanisaurasrex · 20/04/2022 21:55

If you can afford it the yanbu. If you’re struggling then I’m sure it can be done for much less.

we budget £150 p/w for 2 adults, 2 kids. That’s food, cleaning stuff, toiletries, nappies & wipes, alcohol, cat food and litter for 5 cats. So basically everything.

we plan main meals and do a mix of proper cooking and convenience foods, with some treats etc.

Franticbutterfly · 20/04/2022 21:56

We spend about £200 a week if you include Costco. Family of 5 (which includes a DH who eats a lot of protein). We rarely eat out, cook from scratch and eat lots of different kinds of fruit and veg.

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 20/04/2022 21:56

Yes its tons ro me I spend £78 a week 2 adults 1 ds 9 and pets including cleaning stuff shop at sainsbury's no top up shops either and cook from scratch most meals

Nsky62 · 20/04/2022 21:59

Buying booze, or expensive brands, more veggie helps too

Triceratopsrock · 20/04/2022 22:00

2 adults, 3 kids. £130 in Tesco gets all food, cleaning stuff and most toiletries.
It’s a squeeze!

Wouldyabeguilty · 20/04/2022 22:00

About £250 a week, 3 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 cats. Top up shop a couple of times too. I am feeling a bit stupid now compared to some families here.

AledsiPad · 20/04/2022 22:01

My food shop this week, arriving tomorrow from Sainsbury's, is £79. I'm feeding 4 adults, 2 children. It doesn't include dog food/toiletries etc as we get them elsewhere, but it does include all food for breakfast, lunch and dinner for all of us until next Wednesday. We usually have a shop every Wednesday but have been away so it's coming a day later this week. I never spend over £90 online, and if we top up it's just milk/bread so definitely less than £10 a week on top.

We have twice as many people as you. We eat plentiful fruit and veg and I cook everything from scratch. I think you're spending a fortune, sorry!

Wouldyabeguilty · 20/04/2022 22:01

Also no booze!

SockFluffInTheBath · 20/04/2022 22:01

About £140 a week including cleaning things and bathroom things but not dog food. That’s a weekly big shop in Aldi, missing bits from Tesco, then fresh bread, milk and fruit midway. There’s me, a big DH, a hungry DS16 and a DD15.

Neverreturntoathread · 20/04/2022 22:03

Usually about £220-£250 for the three of us.

AChocolateOrangeaday · 20/04/2022 22:04

Ours is about £200 but I shop in M&S and Ocado.

We are 2 adults, 17yr old DS and 1 dog

We can afford it and have no social life so we have nice food instead.

HairyScaryMonster · 20/04/2022 22:05

We usually spend around £70-80 with sometimes a little extra shop, so never more than £100. Get 95% at Aldi and the rest at Tesco over the road. That's for 2 adults and 2 primary age children.

BlancmanegeBunny · 20/04/2022 22:06

Sounds high to me! We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teens and for everything including alcohol my spending averages out at £85 a week.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 22:07

How do yous manage to get it so low? I do buy a lot of fruit and veg. I don't buy any freezer convenient foods or processed foods.

Felix0204 · 20/04/2022 22:10

That's a lot we are on a high income 2 adults 1 child 1 cat and I only spend about about 120- 130 and most of that was Tesco finest. I do buy my cat food in bulk from the Purina website though.

Koigarden · 20/04/2022 22:10

2 adults, 2 children £130-£150 a week online at Tesco. I spend more if I actually go shopping. I probably spend another £20 on bits and bobs throughout the week.
