Teressa May (last government, but same party) with her 'go home immigrants' vans and hostle environment.
Immigration and Borders act.
Transportation to Rwanda.
Bringing laws in trying to limit our right to protest.
Lying to the queen to prorogue parliament.
Lying in the house of commons.
Trying to change the law to get one of your MPs off.
Pretty much ripping up the ministerial code.
Windrush.
Admitting that they're just going to break international law.

I bet they will come after the human rights act and try to get us out of ECHR.

Worse, I think a great many of the public love the fact they've done all the above and would cheer loudly at the ripping up of the human rights act and ECHR membership (wtaf?)

How did we get to this?

I honestly think, away from spaces that tend to be echo chambers online, there is quite widespread support. A lot of people are anti immigration, don’t care about lies or corruption and for most it simply doesn’t apply to them. So they don’t care

EngTech · 17/04/2022 19:39

People will vote accordingly in the GE 👍😳

maducks · 17/04/2022 19:45

How do we manage the tidal wave of illegal immigrants?

We need to do what's right for them, but also the citizens of this country

It's a hard one

I agree.
I hate the way they're trying to dress up the Rwanda thing with bollocks about how they just don't want anyone to drown.

OP posts:
KyieveMii · 17/04/2022 19:49

Maducks maybe create ways of legally applying for asylum outside the UK before travel? A legal route. To deter those without a valid claim, but provide for those whose claim would otherwise be acceptable if they arrived? Do away with the need to travel to claim?

I’m thinking aloud and not an expert on every country as a disclaimer. But is it a suggestion

Kendodd · 17/04/2022 19:50

And it's not just Rwanda, it's all the other stuff as well.

OP posts:
feedyourheed · 17/04/2022 19:52

The ones without a valid claim will still arrive via the Channel safe in the knowledge there is nothing we can do about it. The idea that they pay all that money to people smugglers only to be sent back to Africa will eventually be a deterrent and will also prevent deaths. The threat of Rwanda should see channel crossings dwindle to zero. In which case it is a good plan, no?

maducks · 17/04/2022 19:53

@KyieveMii my uncle came here via claiming asylum over 2 decades ago.

He found the whole process a struggle

Dontevenstart · 17/04/2022 19:56

Let them in. Try and enable them to better their lives.
Being closed borders about it benefits nobody.

KyieveMii · 17/04/2022 19:57

I can imagine. My family are in the process of the Ukrainian scheme (or just hopefully looking at it in some cases) at the moment. Nothing is easy with the uk home office.
I think it needs completely changing, it’s not fit for purpose.

They don't care until their hit in the pockets which is now happening. Elections are won and lost on the economy.
KyieveMii · 17/04/2022 19:58

People mention Africa, but do they represent a majority in boats? Only Eritrea is in the top 10 of asylum seeking nationals here.

maducks · 17/04/2022 19:59

@Dontevenstart we can't let everyone in. It's just not viable

Charley50 · 17/04/2022 20:01

I agree OP. There is this ironic situation where we know that Brexit has had the impact that many industries are now unable to find employees, yet the govt are making it more and more difficult for immigrants of any kind to come here to find work. It's all sorts of fucked up.

Neverendingdust · 17/04/2022 20:01

We’re a small shitty island governed by those with delusions of grandeur, voted for by an easily manipulated, averagely educated electorate. What else did you expect? Utopia?

We overindulged on our misconception of being world leaders with magnificent ideologies that we were a Great Britain. But now he charade is up, the ruse is over, our run has ran and now laid bare for all to see is the reality, Little Britain.

Shit in shit out, it’s the rule of the cosmos. We think we’re better than this and yet we continually prove time and time again, we are simply not.

itsgettingweird · 17/04/2022 20:01

I'm surprised when I have conversation with highly intelligent people who continuously spout "bit who else do we have an an option?".

I mean if we are going to accept all of the above because people think Boris is the best of an unknown lot we really can't move forward.

Parties - I hear a lot "well he's had a rough job - I couldn't do it" and when I say "neither could I - hence why I've never gone into politics" the usually reply "but he didn't expect a pandemic and a war".

And they genuinely seem to think these are acceptable reasons for him to lie and break the law and ministerial code.

It's scares me how many people have been successfully gaslighted by those at the top. Sad

KyieveMii · 17/04/2022 20:01

@feedyourheed I looked online, see the photo I’ve attached
Africa is not the source for most boats (I’m not being argumentative l, your comment about being sent back to Africa made me wonder)

Yes but that's from 2018 to 2020. I would be interested to see last years figures. Although I didn't mean to say 'back to Africa' as aware many are from middle east too.

Neverendingdust · 17/04/2022 20:05

@feedyourheed

Priti, is that you?

Justanotherlurker · 17/04/2022 20:07

My parents and their friends are in full on support of Rwanda as they had to claim asylum decades ago, their narrative is that the social contract will just break for people, if they see themselves paying taxes for queue jumpers and ecomic migrants.

It has reached a point instead of these 'echoes of 1930's germany' emotive types of posts where you need to offer suitable counter arguments instead of just being 'worried' and inderectly name calling.

It is for the so called 'critical thinkers' to address the situation and if that means you are pro open boarders explain how that is a good thing that isn't tied to just because it makes you feel fuzzy and warm.

It is for those who oppose it to offer a potential solution, it is happening globally, the 'it's morally wrong' type posts are becoming more and more useless.

Iflyaway · 17/04/2022 20:07

Ha! Keep dreaming on, love.

DingleyDel · 17/04/2022 20:08

It’s absolutely fucking terrifying.

leotardrock · 17/04/2022 20:08

I agree with OP!

I find it all quite frightening too, we have a very right wing Govt in charge & no one has seemed to notice!

They came in in on a mandate of getting Brexit done & levelling up but they're actually levelling down!
No one will be able to afford to heat their homes by the end of the year & if anyone dares to protest about it then they will be in serious trouble!
