How often do you wash your hair?

Frankie Bridge has said on Instagram that she's now gone 4 days without washing her hair.

I wash mine once a week - is everyone else doing it every day?! AIBU to think 4 days is nothing?

Every day. It looks awful and gets greasy otherwise.

FeelingYellow · 12/04/2022 20:54

I’m once a week too! I have thick hair and it’s fine up until the point of a week. It takes so long to sort hair after a wash that it’s too much time and effort, so working up to a weekly wash has been a saviour

DogsAndGin · 12/04/2022 20:55

YANBU
Everyone has different hair.

Mine might look ok after 3 days, but it doesn’t smell ok!

FabFitFifties · 12/04/2022 21:31

In my teens and twenties every day. In my thirties and forties every other day, if wearing it up. In my fifties, I am delighted to report I no longer get greasy hair, and can go 3 days, even wearing it down. 😊

MinglingFlamingo · 12/04/2022 21:35

Every other day. Optimum is every 36 hours. Before I dyed my hair it had to be every day as it got soo lank and greasy but the colour has dried and soaked up some of the moisture

JanisMoplin · 12/04/2022 21:42

Twice a week. Thick frizzy dry hair. Never gets greasy. More if I go swimming or exercise hard.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 12/04/2022 21:46

Every other day. But I don't use a hairdryer or any styling products so it takes no more time than having my shower.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 12/04/2022 21:54

Once a week on average sometimes longer, its frizzy naturally so needs some oils to tone it down, always looks better on day 3

2018SoFarSoGreat · 12/04/2022 21:55

once a week is fine for me. It is fairly long, thick and course, and any more frequent washing leaves it unmanageable. I have (not by choice) left it longer and it gets better looking, smoother and looks amazing, I am just afraid it might smell a tad.

MrOllivander · 12/04/2022 21:56

@Lunalae

Daily. Have done for 30 years. I have great hair and am glad I never believed all that guff about not washing it 'too much'. Unwashed hair is rank and greasy.
Bearing in mind not everyone is white.. we don't all have straight or fine hair Afro hair needs different care so saying it's rank and greasy is a bit harsh
HesterShaw1 · 12/04/2022 22:00

Every five to six days. I'm yet to find a hair care routine that suits my crappy thinning perimenopausal hair

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 12/04/2022 22:02

Twice a week for both me and DD (13) otherwise it gets greasy very quickly.

noblegreenk · 12/04/2022 22:04

3 times a week. So that's every other day (Mon, Wed, Fri) and I don't do much on Sundays, so I just tie it up or put a hat on.

Jazzyjeffery · 12/04/2022 22:05

Used to be every day but I've managed to stretch it to 3. But I have to absolutely blast it with dry shampoo. I Get through a couple of cans a month at least. If I don't use the dry shampoo it's greasy the next day as usual despite washing it less for 2 years now. So I don't think it's been trained, just masked with the dry shampoo! It does get itchy though by day three.

MrsAmber · 12/04/2022 22:06

I wash it every day as it’s fine and looks greasy and awful otherwise. I’ve tried dry shampoo etc but nothing helps other than washing it.

The only positive to having fine, straight hair is that the drying, styling process is a doddle. Takes no time to dry, is poker straight without any effort and takes a minimal amount of time sort out.

Scianel · 12/04/2022 22:07

Now it's really long it's a faff doing it over the sink

Mine is below my waist and thick and I wash it fine in the shower, surely the sink is a lot more hassle?

mamawho99 · 12/04/2022 22:08

Every other day.

I have to wash my fringe every day as I must have the worlds greasiest forehead.

The back of my hair gets greasy on day 2 so I have to wash it that night!

Tippexy · 12/04/2022 22:09

The more frequently you wash it, the shorter the length between washes will get over time.

Bingo!

This is nonsense.

Oily scalps are caused by hormone imbalances. Often associated with conditions such as overactive thyroid/ PCOS etc.

Your hormones do not know how many days you have gone between hair washes. Wink

Backgroundnoises · 12/04/2022 22:19

Wore it very short all my life. Washed it daily when showering, then finger dried as it never looked good after a night’s sleep and definitely greasy after 2 days.
Let it grow during lockdown. Now that it’s shoulder length, delighted to find once a week is enough. I’m grey now though so hair is much drier and washing it more often makes it so dry and frizzy. Being able to tie it up in a pony is brilliant too if it’s starting to look a bit ropy.

Lougle · 12/04/2022 22:25

Every day Sad Fine hair but lots of it (so say the hairdressers). No matter what shampoo I try, it looks terrible the next morning.

Lougle · 12/04/2022 22:25

Any tips very gratefully received!!

BogRollBOGOF · 12/04/2022 22:30

It needs doing on day 5 if I've not been doing sweaty exercise. It's never needed doing with high frequency.

YerAWizardHarry · 12/04/2022 22:35

Generally 5 days out of 7. The two days I don’t it’s actually chucked up in a messy bun with dry shampoo. I’ve tried “training” my hair to be less greasy (several times over lockdown!) and it just doesn’t work for me!

Hardtofindafreename · 12/04/2022 22:42

Every day when I shower and depending on gym/training schedule, can be twice. Very surprised at some of the responses, I always just kinda assumed everyone washed their hair every day. Mine is fairly fine hair so it does need a bit of body daily but dd who has lovely thick luscious thick hair washes hers daily too.

Namaste6 · 12/04/2022 22:43

Once a week - but the last 2-3 days are popped up in a messy bun. Moving to a good quality dry shampoo, solid shampoo and conditioner and a silk pillowcase have all helped. Went for my quarterly highlights a few weeks ago and my hairdresser said my hair was in excellent condition.
