To write my neighbour a letter

Bridie20 · 08/04/2022 19:42

They’re not a next door neighbour think number 85 and 65 type neighbours.

We’ve lived here 4.5 years, obviously in 2020 started walking lots. Noticed that on their front garden wall (the one which joins their garden to their next door neighbour) is a boot. A womens shoe. This was in 2020. The boot is still there.

WIBU to write an anonymous letter asking them what their intention is with this boot? It’s a black, suede ankle boot with a 2 inch heel. We only spotted it cos we thought it was a cat (lockdown led us to going cat spotting on our daily walks ffs).

Wtf? 😂

This reminds me of that Inside Number 9 episode. I wouldn't be able to let it go either op.

FuckYouDebbie · 08/04/2022 20:41

You haven't got a leg to stand on!

chisanunian · 08/04/2022 20:41

What with all the winds we've had in recent weeks, I'm surprised it hasn't blown off.

SophieJo · 08/04/2022 20:42

It’s a Friday night poster!

Bridie20 · 08/04/2022 20:50

I’m very glad some of you have a sense of humour! 😂

Then there’s some of you who think I’m losing sleep over the bleedin boot 🙈

The boot might have been important to them or maybe had seeds in that never grew. I'd definitely ask these neighbours if they're in their front garden this spring/ summer!
If it's gone and they say, "what boot?" you can then ponder on the mystery further- e.g. was it the lost boot of a Victorian ghost who took it back?

Ridingoutthewaves · 08/04/2022 20:59

Put another boot/ shoe next to it. See what happens.

DigitusImpudicus · 08/04/2022 21:01

Check on it daily. A photo here would be appropriate.

Maybe it's there in memoriam 🥾

Cornettoninja · 08/04/2022 21:03

@FloraPostePosts

Watch the episode of Inside No 9 called Diddle Diddle Dumpling, then leave them, and the boot, alone.
First thing I thought of!

It’s unlikely to be a similarly sad reason though tbf, maybe it’s a stand off between a couple over who should put it in the bloody bin.

YouTubeRabbitHole · 08/04/2022 21:08

Busy bodies tend to send anonymous letters, can’t you start a conversation with your neighbour? At least if you write let them know who it’s from.

Hohumfeelingglum · 08/04/2022 21:09

I can't wait to see the "someone removed my boot ornament from my garden all, aibu?" Thread

User280905 · 08/04/2022 21:14

Someone along the road from us has an Evian water bottle lying on their front door mat. It's been there for months. I look for it every time I pass, I don't know what I'll do if it ever disappears.

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/04/2022 21:17

@pepsirolla

I would put a stuffed sock in it then gradually build it up over time until it is a full scarecrow
@pepsirolla - genius 😅😅😅😅

Maybe it's some kind of sign.

Maybe they type it on their pizza instructions "we're the house with the boot on the wall". I remember the thread on here the other week when the takeaway went to the wrong house - can't be too careful.

Maybe they're swingers and it's some kind of swinger code. Like pampas grass for the new millennium.

Maybe they're drug dealers. I saw a trainer hanging from a tree once outside a block of flats and was bemused by it. Apparently that is a signal about drugs. Facebook people told me so it must be true....

Maybe one of them is having an affair and when the boot is removed, it's a sign that the coast is clear.

Maybe they're just shit and lazy at gardening (my tribe).

I'm getting into this now. I'm with you OP. I need to know. Send the above as a tick-box multi-choice questionnaire and ask them to leave the completed form tucked in the boot.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/04/2022 21:19

Just knock on their door and ask them - the worst they can do is shoe you away.

What with all the winds we've had in recent weeks, I'm surprised it hasn't blown off.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/04/2022 21:24

Is it near a lamp-post or telegraph pole? If so, put up two notices: one official-looking one giving notice that planning permission has been requested for the permanent locating of a second boot; and another lonely-hearts style one with a photo of the boot, saying "Single boot, lives on a garden wall - WLTM similar for good times, companionship and to share the rest of my life with. Must be a kind sole; strictly NO espadrilles".

this makes me laugh
dropoutdoreen · 08/04/2022 21:33

What's the point? If it's anonymous, you wont get a response

So what do you hope to gain?

Do this
HappydaysArehere · 08/04/2022 21:39

This is mad.

fossilsmorefossils · 08/04/2022 21:39

Buy some cheap second hand boots and add one extra every week. The quirkier, the better.

Or put the boot upside doen and asd an elf on the shelf.

MRex · 08/04/2022 21:42

My neighbour has taken some stuff to the tip from our front garden. We don't have any boots, but stuff from the house has been put there recently and he likes going to the tip often, so he asked if he could take it. Clears the front garden, he gets a trip out, all good. I don't think anything would stay there for years, but doubt I'd notice something on the wall, or remember how long it was there. I think you should just ask if they'd like you to take it away. If it turns out the boot is a memorial to someone who's gone missing then you'll get your answer.

I REALLY want to know the story of the boot now.

Love this
DuckPancake · 08/04/2022 22:17

I'm so invested. Really want to see a picture. I wonder where the other boot is.
