trib.al/ov5g0nj I can’t stand the throes but agree with this

You mean Johnson, that prick who lies every time his mouth moves?

toconclude · 06/04/2022 21:09

@Weirdwonders

I trust him on this issue about as much as I’m likely to trust anything he’s ever said to a woman before. Or to the electorate.
Thank you. Although apparently he can still fool some people if you push the correct buttons. But like like 'Brexit means Brexit'. Equally meaningless yet politically effective to those who prefer slogans to the effort of thinking.

I don't really know how she could have been clearer?

Whatonearth07957 · 06/04/2022 21:11

I want a say... The silent or less vocal majority need someone to speak for them... Boris just has. Ok he's an opportunist but there's no other choice out there. This isn't a single issue, it's seismic it's affecting our children. Can't really see any difference other than aggression on the left. I'm voting on this issue and hope candidates will be clear ... The only other major thing is Ukraine and Tories are clearer than labour in their support. I can't see labour helping cost of living and debt any more than Tories they're all in the middle fiddling while Rome burns.

Also dislike the metropolitan labour elitists sneering at mumsnet being concerned about this. It doesn't affect me but it affects the most vulnerable WOMEN.
@Theluggage15

Starmer is saying whatever he’s saying because the vote is won or lost among 30 million British households. Not among the 200,000 who lap up the culture war BS in the Daily Mail or 200 people commenting on MN articles.

(Regarding the Daily Mail I say 200,000 rather than 2 million because a huge number of people who click on/read such rags read them for shits and giggles and to see celebs in swimsuits - the articles are a source of comedy, nothing more)
If you believe that, why do you give a shit on here then?

You also said,

Not his biggest fan, but Starmer is a fairly shrewd guy. He’s alienated a million or so supporters on the so called “hard” left in order to make the Labour brand less unappealing to the centre ground voters. His reasoning is that he can’t afford to now also alienate the soft left but liberal/woke Guardian reading types on culture war type issues

As a now ex-Labour voter (in this and the previous election) I personally think he is alienating a whole lot more people than this, across the whole spectrum. Which is quite feat.

(No I won't vote Tory.)

MyBottomDecides · 06/04/2022 21:12

Equal parts delighted that a party leader has said this, and disappointed that it was Boris.

Really hope that the LibDems, Labour and Greens do some proper thinking now so I can vote in May

Wrongkindofovercoat · 06/04/2022 21:14

Johnson has said the bare minimum that is reasonable

He has and yet so many other politicians, especially those in Labour and the Lib Dems, appear to be terrified of doing similar. Why ?

Why is basic biology and common sense something to be scared of ?

DalarnaHorses · 06/04/2022 21:16

I'm kind of gutted about that statement coming out of Boris's mouth. Boris fgs, I know a stopped clock is right twice a day, but still. It was a considered and measured statement, I just wish it had come from Starmer.

DomesticatedZombie · 06/04/2022 21:16

@Proudboomer

Not a fan but if he is the only one who is going to protect Womens rights , sports and spaces then I will hold my nose and give him my vote.
Yep. Same.
HRTQueen · 06/04/2022 21:17

Pitafalafel keep kidding yourself it you don’t think the DM has any political clout

For Starmer this will absolutely come back to haunt him come election time this isn’t going away it’s too easy an argument to bash Labour with

Starmer should be more politically savvy he is the leader of the opposition

MrPanks · 06/04/2022 21:17

The Torys are the only party with the balls to speak up for what is common sense and safeguarding kids. I say that as a life long Labour voter. This issue is too important to me to vote for anyone that cannot stand up for children and women's sex based rights. I will be voting on this single issue. As the mother of a teen captured by the thought of being in the wrong body, I can't not. I hope I'm protecting her future health and her rights.

SmellyOldOwls · 06/04/2022 21:17

Good, the more people who just come out and say it the better. He's still no friend of women though.

Turningpurple · 06/04/2022 21:17

My feminism doesn't deny other people's rights

It does if you support the end of spaces segregated by sex.

It was Starmer’s quote in the link I looked for as he is the leader of the party. It wasn’t great in terms of clarity.

And Rayner has further undermined their position today.

I know you are happy with their messaging but it’s too muddled and it’s not hitting home with the majority interested in this issue.

TheKeatingFive · 06/04/2022 21:20

He's still no friend of women though.

I totally agree with this.

I'm just ridiculously pleased someone in our political elite understands the basics of biology and isn't afraid to state facts.

It's a low bar, but that's where we've got to.

blueshoes · 06/04/2022 21:20

I see this as Carrie's influence on Boris.

At least some good has come out of that. Cut through all the bullsh_t to get to the heart of it.

Westchesterarms · 06/04/2022 21:21

@Pitafalafel
Starmer is a fairly shrewd guy.
I see no shrewdness in him whatsoever. I see a nice, dull guy totally out of his depth. He looks uncomfortable when he speaks. And that's quite important because if your personality and your presence doesn't win votes, then your words need to. But you're saying that what he says is meaningless, so then what's the point of voting for him? And if both Johnson's and Starmers' words are equally meaningless, I'd rather vote for the one who professes to have a belief close to mine, than one who is quite clear that he doesn't.

PoshPyjamas · 06/04/2022 21:21

I absolutely agree with Boris, and regardless of everything else, the relief that someone's finally said this means I will vote for him because of it.

You would vote for Lab/Green/Lib Dem if they copied what Boris said today?
 1. their parties won't let them
 2. they don't really think it.

What I liked about Boris' comments was that they were common sense, but accepted that the issues should be dealt with with compassion and sensitivity.

DrSbaitso · 06/04/2022 21:23

My feminism doesn't deny other people's rights.

Of course it does. It denies sex-based ones. It's not comparable to being gay. If you're not gay, gay rights will never affect you. If you're not trans, trans "rights" as they seem to stand will deny you sex based rights and all the resulting safeguards.

Herewegoagain84 · 06/04/2022 21:23

Hate him, but 100% agree with him on this.

Fleetheart · 06/04/2022 21:23

on this issue Boris happens to agree with mex

KristinaYang · 06/04/2022 21:28

Exactly. It isn't even difficult.
