@Timeforausernamechange22

There was a homeward shop in Kent called The Merchant Chandler. I loved browsing that place and got some fab pieces there. I miss my local John Lewis that shut down last year. I miss Debenhams blue zoo kids clothes, bhs home department, mothercare. I remember John Menzies, and we had a cd store (not hmv though, I can’t remember it’s name) that as teens, we’d spend ages browsing and buying the 99p singles.
That's Maidstone! Has it gone?
NewYearSoon · 04/04/2022 01:28

Timothy Whites.
It got taken over by Boots, but the two shops were not the same.

F.Cooke pie and mash shop in Kingsland Road, E8.
Chuen Cheng Ku dim sum restaurant in Wardour Street.
Mrs Moon's pub (The Dive Bar) in Fleet Street.

Coast is still around.

Choccywoccydoodah
Patisserie Valerie

Mumwithapub · 04/04/2022 01:37

Casey Jones burger bar was the best. They only had a few all in train stations. Used to go to the Liverpool one before getting train home.
Miss Woolworths, John Menzies and Stolen from Ivor.

@GrandTheftWalrus

There used to be a restaurant called Fatty Arbuckles. Loved their butterfly chicken. Was actually talking about it the other night .
Yes fatty arbuckles!!

Coast is still online :)

Bay trading, jjb, west one, pilot, Warner bros store

Flapjacker48 · 04/04/2022 01:46

Littlewoods - only cause the cafes in the stores used to do a brilliant 8 item breakfast for £1.89 or so.

Rockmehardplace · 04/04/2022 01:47

Debenhams
And was just thinking randomly about Past Times shops the other day!

Undertheoldlindentree · 04/04/2022 01:59

Habitat in the 80's! I was a student and could barely afford anything, but spent hours wandering and admiring the designs. Cable & Co shoes, especially admired the wedding collection in beautiful ivory silks. Paper by the Pound - a rainbow of writing paper at pocket money prices. Benetton to admire the folding!

Undertheoldlindentree · 04/04/2022 02:08

Oh and specialist jeans shops in every town, selling a range of brands. You knew you would find your ultimate pair as they carried so much stock, it was just a case of dedicating a couple of hours to try on every possible pair and bribing a friend to sit on the floor in the changing room dispensing advice.

MaybeMonster · 04/04/2022 02:13

There's a BHS lighting range sold at Matalan & maybe other places.

I miss Past Times, the Pier and Debenhams in its heyday.

@lollipoprainbow

What will be the next high Street casualty?

Boots, smiths

My vote is Smiths. They are looking and feeling rather tired. 🌹

DancingBarefootOnIce · 04/04/2022 02:17

I wouldn’t want them back as it’d be impractical but in a way I miss video rental places. I guess they just remind me of childhood. There was something special about going around looking at the selection, getting snacks etc. It’s so much more convenient now with Netflix etc but not as special.

florianfortescue · 04/04/2022 02:23

Great Queen Street, my favourite restaurant of all time and a place of many happy and significant meals and memories for me.

Also Topshop!

kateandme · 04/04/2022 02:37

This makes me nostalgic.for being young,when you shopped by going to town,when people had money!

Newestname002 · 04/04/2022 02:39

Yes agree re Woolworths and also, sadly, BhS. I really hope M&S doesn't go the same way. 🌹

groovergirl · 04/04/2022 02:47

Australian here, so some of these names won't mean much to UK MNers. But I miss:

Video libraries and record stores. It was fun to browse and take a chance on new things. My first job was in a record store, and it was the making of me; I flourished there.

Topshop in Bondi Junction, Sydney. I loved and wore the men's T-shirt styles, in Small for my female frame.

Sportsgirl of the '80s and '90s. Beautiful casual clothes that I still wear, despite being long out of my teen years. The chain was sold and tho it continues the quality is not great.

And some favourite Sydney restaurants that did excellent veggie food: Sennin, Bali House, Il Gufo, Crocodile Junior, Lawrie's, Raquel's and the Green Park Diner. I loved your dinners. Sad

Wimbunds · 04/04/2022 02:48

Shellys and Ravel shoes. Tower records

1TheCircle · 04/04/2022 02:54

Whoever has said La Senza, I can still remember the smell of those little beads! Was a real treat to buy something from there. Keep the carrier bag etc.
As a young teenager, loved Tammy Girl.

I can remember when our Shopping mall in the nearest city was built- Wow!! Felt amazing walking around there :)

HandlebarLadyTash · 04/04/2022 03:36

@Crunched

Just Duck in the podium in Bath. Crispy aromatic duck is my death row meal and a restaurant that served nothing else was perfect. I miss Wollies and my local House of Fraser.
That sounds amazing
Superhanz · 04/04/2022 03:38

Leisure world in Belfast, I would love to bring my daughter there.

Monty27 · 04/04/2022 03:39

@OwlinaTree

What will be the next high Street casualty? I vote Marks and Spencers.
Poundstretchers I reckon will be the next high st casualty.
runsoncaffeine4 · 04/04/2022 03:48

Woolworths!

LouMoo13 · 04/04/2022 03:52
