For me, Topshop. Was really gutted when it closed down. Restaurant: Herman ze German. Expensive but always enjoyed the food!

There was a homeward shop in Kent called The Merchant Chandler. I loved browsing that place and got some fab pieces there.
I miss my local John Lewis that shut down last year.
I miss Debenhams blue zoo kids clothes, bhs home department, mothercare. I remember John Menzies, and we had a cd store (not hmv though, I can’t remember it’s name) that as teens, we’d spend ages browsing and buying the 99p singles.

BHS
House of Fraser for tights
Borders bookshop

The 1980s version of Laura Ashley before it became rubbish

elliejjtiny · 04/04/2022 00:09

Loved Woolworths, especially the pick and mix. La senza was lovely too, loved how they wrapped everything in tissue paper with those smelly beads.

Kitkat151 · 04/04/2022 00:15

@JohannSebastianBach

Athena for the lovely posters and calendars
I LOVED this shop 💕

Pizza Land
Casey Jones Burger Bar

Borders bookshop was great, had totally forgotten about it.

RoseParade · 04/04/2022 00:19

@Gardeningcreature Yes, yes, Pizzaland! With a sort of fried, deep-pan pizza? It came to the table in a a pan... I was only around 12, so struggling to remember 35 years later!! But I do remember it tasted better than any pizza I have had since.

cloudylemonade13 · 04/04/2022 00:21

Yes and a baked potato with a massive dollop of coleslaw! I think it was the tomato sauce on the pizza that really made it. And the salad bar was such a novelty then.

chisanunian · 04/04/2022 00:22

Woolworths definitely.

IcakethereforeIam · 04/04/2022 00:26

C&A, the gay pride flag (the rainbow one) always makes me think first of that shop.

Chohlin654 · 04/04/2022 00:26

I never even realised half of these had closed

StoneofDestiny · 04/04/2022 00:26

Debenhams

Boots cafe - loved their coffee cake.

Svalberg · 04/04/2022 00:28

@NancyDrooo BHS should’ve stuck to homewares, their clothes were dreadful but nowhere was better for lighting
BHS were still having clothes manufactured to the wartime economy standard in the 1980s (and possibly beyond that), you could tell by the amount of material in the hem & seams, i.e. none spare!

PlainJaneEyre · 04/04/2022 00:28

Debenhams for a good old general browse
Laura Ashley
BHS for bedding
Principles when they did decent clothes
Monsoon ditto
T J Hughes for kitchen stuff
Older ones:
Richards
Dolcis shoes
Chelsea Girl
Woolworths

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 04/04/2022 00:30

I was just thinking about Herman’s tonight and how many stamps I had left to fill the loyalty card. Definitely the restaurant I miss the most, the tasty fries, the bratwurst, don’t even get me started on Fritz Kola

Sorry for @Hairbrush123 - you weren’t alone in your Herman’s love

)!diitto with warehouse

dollymuchymuchness · 04/04/2022 00:35

BHS and C & A.

Marcipex · 04/04/2022 00:43

The Body Shop in the lovely days of perfume testers in giant glass jars, and a kids range with elephants on.

Woolies on a wet Saturday.

Laura Ashley when we could dress like milkmaids (we thought) for summer weddings.

Peaness · 04/04/2022 00:47

RIP Oasis Sad

LBFseBrom · 04/04/2022 00:48

Woolworths, Cullens, Kennedys, BHS.

Local to me, Allders in Bromley.

I can't think of restaurants off hand except for a couple of small, local ones which have closed and been replaced by other restaurants.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 04/04/2022 00:50

@SocksAndTheCity

Another vote for TopShop, especially the Oxford Circus one Sad.

My past favourites include Snob, Athena the makeup range they used to sell in Miss Selfridge and (a bit niche) a burger place in Hull called Yankee Burger that had the best chips ever 😊

The pink one with the Cadillac on the roof?? 😍
Nightfeedwatcher · 04/04/2022 00:51

I used to go shopping with my grandma a lot as a child and this thread has brought back a lot of fond memories Flowers

L0stinCyberspace · 04/04/2022 00:56

Oasis
Past Times
Debenhams
Sock Shop

Time40 · 04/04/2022 01:12

I miss most of the ones mentioned, especially Dolcis. We've lost so many.

Chelsea Girl didn't close down, though - it just changed its name to River Island.

streamee · 04/04/2022 01:15

@lollipoprainbow
