For me, Topshop. Was really gutted when it closed down. Restaurant: Herman ze German. Expensive but always enjoyed the food!

Still seen wimpy, spud you like, cafe rouge and carluccios. Just not as many around.
I miss-

  1. The little chef
  2. Bay trading
  3. The victorian tea room that used to be in our town.
Made me all nostalgic and sad now. Life seemed so much easier back then and not just for the shops.

@Oneeata

Theres a few I really miss from years back and unsure if one or two were regional to us in the North East. Firstly is/was Geordie Jeans, secondly was a shop called What everyone wants and or The What Shop, Binns and Joplings department stores. It's such a shame, could go on and on. Not exactly restaurants but I miss another North East cafe/bakery Carrick's. I can smell it if I close my eyes. 😌
Oh my goodness "What every woman wants"

That's rang a bell 😁

Scotland's version of Primark in the 80's ?

I miss Harry Ramsdens Fish & Chips. Yes, I know there are a few outlets remaining, but they're pretty crap now and nothing like they used to be when it was a smaller/private company.

Those living in the NW England will remember Birketts bakery chain. They sold a brilliant range of cream cakes, pies and made to order sandwiches. Unfortunately, they sold out to Creggs!

lollipoprainbow · 10/04/2022 10:44

Does anyone remember tchibo?? It was a German shop which sold lovely household bits and also had a lovely coffee shop.

JohannSebastianBach · 10/04/2022 13:10

@lollipoprainbow Tchibo is still going strong in Germany

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 10/04/2022 13:13

Republic. I liked Soul Cal and Crafted stuff and their clothes fitted me. The nearest ones to me became Superdry shops.

SmudgeButt · 10/04/2022 13:33

Not defunct but just not local.

Tim Horton's.

I miss the Timbits. And I hear now they have Bieber Bites too!

(yes a couple in London which is too far to go for donuts. And why are there about a half dozen in Glasgow??)

VestaTilley · 10/04/2022 13:45

Debenhams, BHS, Woolies for pic ‘n’ mix.

yellowsuninthesky · 10/04/2022 13:50

@sophienelisse

Q & S but I think this may have been only on Liverpool
no I remember Q&S too, they were a bit like Peacocks?

I used to like going to the Spud U like in Exeter (didn't live there but occasionally went to visit a student friend who lived there)

I didn't know they were a thing in the UK. I like their coffee and used to stock up at Cologne railway station.

closetmeupandshootmetotheskies · 10/04/2022 13:56

@Lonelydaisy

Adams kids clothes store
Their clothing was so lovely. Really miss it, loved buying stuff for my nephews and nieces there.

Oh, and Woolies. Our local one closed down and it's now a B&M, but funnily enough, the pic and mix aisle still smells exactly the same.

Valentine259 · 10/04/2022 13:57

I used to go to London to my favourite shop - the massive Paperchase store on Tottenham Court Road. Planned a concert in London last month and thought I would take a peek in there beforehand - it closed last year and us now a restaurant- gutted 😒

SpicedGin · 10/04/2022 15:20

So much nostalgia on this thread.

Radio Rentals! I remember the excitement of going there every time we upgraded our TV 😁😁

NecklessMumster · 10/04/2022 15:32

I was in Bristol last week and wanted a good quality dressing gown and couldn't think where to go..Debenhams closed down, M and S closed down, BHS closed down,

Yeah, it folded.
Spacie · 10/04/2022 18:43

Debenhams.

And Gordon Thoday (that dates me!)

susiella · 10/04/2022 19:06

Cole Brothers and Tuckwoods restaurant in Sheffield.
Muntus, John Speed, Denhams, and Danny Williams in Rotherham

MooseBreath · 10/04/2022 20:28

Canadian here, so I don't know if it's relevant, but SmartSet had the best smart-casual clothes. Also Target, which no longer exists in Canada.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 10/04/2022 21:02

I have a lot of nostalgia for Kensington Market and Hyper Hyper on Ken High St. Long gone now but to my teenage self the place to be in the 80s. Also Cranks with the clumsy earthenware pottery etc before they expanded and went bust. It was a place of pilgrimage for 1980s vegetarians.

More recently - Topshop. Bit sad that DD will never experience the excitement of going down the escalators to the huge one on Oxford Circus. Big feature of my 20s - and I still have several excellent things I bought there in the 90s!

Carliforniansunsets · 10/04/2022 21:41

Oasis and Warehouse. I know they are online now, but it’s nit the same as going into the shop, and I just think the quality of the clothes now are cheap tat!

Squiff70 · 10/04/2022 22:53

Does anyone else remember Cooplands bakery? My grandparents used to take me there to choose a cake when I was very little and I invariably came out clutching a gingerbread man. I can still smell the shop now. It's so comforting and always makes me smile Smile

@Squiff70 we still have cooplands! There's one in my village.
Squiff70 · 11/04/2022 07:53

@Bentoforthehorde next time you're there, please have a gingerbread man for me! Smile

Bentoforthehorde · 11/04/2022 07:59

@Squiff70 I'm 37 and I still get a gingerbread man/Teddy every time I'm in there Blush
