For me, Topshop. Was really gutted when it closed down. Restaurant: Herman ze German. Expensive but always enjoyed the food!

OP posts:

Laura Ashley

Crikeyalmighty · 04/04/2022 21:39

Definitely Debenhams - I could always find something for a wedding outfit or a new top and I used to like the Julian mcdonald range

Borders and ottakars

Adams - very good stuff

Carluccios- although an odd few branches still around

I also really liked Herman ze German

Maplins and Tandy - my H still hasn’t recovered from their closure!!

MintyGreenDream · 04/04/2022 21:43

Jane norman.Their bodycon dresses suited me perfectly

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/04/2022 21:46

We had a routine of getting at least two Argos catalogues (one for us one for grandmas) 4 ELC catalogues (1 each boy and one for grandmas)
Ds1 had a full range of their improbably huge farm and zoo animals. Kept them quiet for hours.( and grandma!)
Their favourite was the Warner Brithers store. They could spend hours in there. I think dh still has a bugs bunny tie.

GrandTheftWalrus · 04/04/2022 21:59

I loved the Warner bros store and the original Disney store with the massive pile of teddies.

I also didn't realise la tasca was a chain. There was one in Glasgow.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2022 22:30

@KaptainKaveman I remember the name Boules. But can't remember what it sold!

Mangofandangoo · 04/04/2022 22:48

Top shop still exists on ASOS

Belkell · 04/04/2022 23:08

@GrandTheftWalrus

The teenage boy working in the kitchen. Management KNEW about the faulty equipment and had so many chances to put it right. It hit home because I was a kitchen porter in somewhere similarly slapdash when I was his age.

Sorry for the derail. But when I saw the name I got shivers.

Belkell · 04/04/2022 23:11

The place I really, really miss is the corn exchange in Manchester, before the IRA blew it up. I loved the poky dusty little shops selling books and crystals and goth clothes and army surplus. Blew my pocket money there many a time.

Afflecks (Palace) is still there, but it’s not the same 🙁

Smokeahontas · 04/04/2022 23:16

Haven’t RTFT, but does anyone else remember Spoils?

lollipoprainbow · 04/04/2022 23:21

My dad used to take me to happy Eater and little chef in the 80's. Still remember the free lollies by the till!

SouperNoodle · 04/04/2022 23:22

Chimichangas! Their frozen passion fruit daiquiris and their burritos with spicy rice were sooooo good!

GrandTheftWalrus · 04/04/2022 23:31

Yeah don't blame you @belkell.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 00:44

This thread is pure nostalgia!

Bay...Woolies...The Pier!!
Cargo..I bought so many great things from there
Barratts shoes wow haven't heard that for years

Faith shoes were the best. And universally comfy

Warehouse & Oasis, I still haven't recovered from those. Used to love Jane Norman as a skinny teen too.

Genuinely think I still have an ottakers voucher somewhere!

La Senza
HMV :(

ToysRUs are reopening!

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 00:47

When did we lose Karen Millen? I hadn't heard about that!

@Stabbitystabstab Boux was really good for a few short years but it's long gone to sh*t

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 00:48

Do people remember Contessa? For Womens night clothes.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 00:50

Sorry another post but Etam! It was like New Looks cooler big sister

Rosehugger · 05/04/2022 05:38

Etam was dreadful.

Completely agree. They were brilliant.
Rosehugger · 05/04/2022 05:48

Mongolian barbecue was an awful gimmick. Queue up for ages and wait for your fairly boring stir fry to be cooked. It was as if it was waiting for the concept of food and drinks being brought to your table while you relax to be invented.

Keladrythesaviour · 05/04/2022 07:54

Oasis and warehouse. So reliable that I'd find something I liked and found the fit good for my body shape. I believe they still have some kind of online showing but I like to try on and feel material, I hate clothes shopping online.

Carluccios for a restaurant. Always a tasty and reliable lunch menu when out in town!

marmiteadict · 05/04/2022 08:00

Café Rouge. My teen self thought it the height of sophistication 😂

In 2019.
dayswithaY · 05/04/2022 08:19

Topshop and Oasis do exist online but the names were just bought up by ASOS and Boohoo respectively, and they scrapped all the original designers, so it's just their own tat being sold under another name. Same as Warehouse, Karen Millen and Dorothy Perkins. Not the same thing at all.

I miss Debenhams, BHS, Allders and the old House of Fraser. I love a department store.

User748956 · 05/04/2022 08:22

When DS was young Adams childrenswear was good.
