BHS, it was the only place I could get nice appropriate clothes for work. Lovely well priced homeware.

knittingaddict · 05/04/2022 08:45

@marmiteadict

Café Rouge. My teen self thought it the height of sophistication 😂
There are still 29 branches of Cafe Rouge. They haven't entirely vanished

In Glasgow, virgo on Union Street

millievanille · 05/04/2022 11:07

Partners stationers was one of my favourite shops in our shopping centre. They had little notebooks on the shelves so you could test the pens before buying and we used to write little messages for people to read. I was gutted when it got taken over by Ryman!

Richards
Mothercare
Adams
The Reject Shop

@Keladrythesaviour

Oasis and warehouse. So reliable that I'd find something I liked and found the fit good for my body shape. I believe they still have some kind of online showing but I like to try on and feel material, I hate clothes shopping online.

Carluccios for a restaurant. Always a tasty and reliable lunch menu when out in town!

We still have about 10 Carluccios within a 10 mile radius of us (Surrey)

Bit niche but Goth teenager me really misses Kensington Market.

Seconded. …er, as it were.[/quote]
Yessssss and Hyper Hyper!

TeddyTrucks · 05/04/2022 12:16

Not a whole shop per se but Whittards in the early 90s sold these huge mugs with hand-painted animals on them. I had a snail one and a walrus one and they've both got broken over the years. I keep looking on ebay but in vain....😔

MissDollyMix · 05/04/2022 13:10

I've loved reading this thread, although it's set off a fair dose of nostalgia. I really miss shopping on the high street. I buy a lot less online, much less impulse spending. It's a real shame. I wonder if it will come full circle and we'll ever see a growth in 'real life' shopping again. I hope so.
I miss Oasis for clothes. That's been the biggest, most recently loss for me. I used to buy so much there.
It's probably a bit niche but wondering if anyone remembers a restaurant in Watford called Calendars? I think it was part of a chain. Always used to go there for birthday treats when I was a child. I remember you could get these amazing sundaes before sundaes were available everywhere...
There's still a Dutch Pancake House in York. I think it's an indie but might help those missing the old chain!

texasschmexas · 05/04/2022 13:14

Jamie's

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 13:24

@Rosehugger

Etam was dreadful.
Maybe that's why i was never allowed to shop there! Funny how parental rules influence what you think about a place lol
Gardeningcreature · 05/04/2022 13:52

I bought dd clothes from Adams.
I also bought a gorgeous dress from Snob for my first holiday abroad without my parents. It was a white sleeveless dress with a light floral pattern, tulips absolutely beautiful.

marmiteadict · 05/04/2022 14:13

@MissDollyMix I remember Calendars ion the St Albans road in Garson.

Had many a works night out there in the early 90's.

I think it is a TGI's now

TheseDaysGoBy · 05/04/2022 14:24

Toys R Us

I never even noticed Topshop had closed down! Just shows how much I visit the high street Shock

HollowedOut · 05/04/2022 16:21

@marmiteadict Cafe Rouge still exists. I was in one a few weeks ago.

knittingaddict · 05/04/2022 16:46

@texasschmexas

Jamie's
I've never had a good experience at a Jamie's. I don't miss them at all.
MissDollyMix · 05/04/2022 18:02

Jamie's had a good kids menu as I recall... not just the average 'n' chips..Can't remember the adult food so that probably says a lot!

marmiteadict · 05/04/2022 18:47

@knittingaddict @HollowedOut Many thanks. No Cafe Rouge locally anymore but will have to look.

texasschmexas · 05/04/2022 20:01

Oh I really liked the food. Authentic Italian with a twist. Also not too expensive for what it was, which probably is what led to their demise. That finocchiona sausage and brocoletti pasta. Proper gelato for the kids.. Service might be location specific though. London was fab.

Titsflyingsouth · 05/04/2022 21:42

What will be the next high Street casualty?

WH Smith's

I literally have no idea how they are still in business. The one near me is permanently empty.

Also Body Shop - used to be booming when I was a kid. I don't know anyone who buys from there anymore.

HollowedOut · 05/04/2022 22:28

Body Shop deserves to go. They’ve been shit for years, they prey on poorer mums with their MLM and the way they treated JK Rowling was just vile.

I’m amazed at some of the department store that are still managing to hang on such as Hoopers and Fenwicks are still just about holding on. I occasionally pop into the shoppers near me and the staff always look shocked when someone comes to look at their stock rather than go straight to the cafe.

Woolies
Bhs

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/04/2022 23:17

Another vote for The Pier, all my bedroom furniture is from there and I still love it.

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2022 07:19

I really like Body Shop stuff

Malibuismysecrethome · 06/04/2022 08:06

Maireas did you also go to Oodles just before Holborn. I also loved Justin de Blank. Happy days!
