To think this should be against the law

I'm staying at my inlaws this weekend. They don't have a lock on the shower room. I have a lightning fast shower, terrified of FIL walking in the entire time. He wouldn't do this on purpose but my kids would fling the door open without a second's thought of anyone else being nearby.

I was at a BBQ last year with about 20 other people. No lock on the bathroom door. Had to wee as quickly as possible in fear.

I think a lock, or some other method of indicating the room is occupied, should be a legal requirement punished with a fixed penalty fine of £100 or unlimited fine and 3 months in prison if the lack of lock results in someone seeing your bum.

I'm really trying to work out if this is a serious post or not 🤔

If it then YABU

Don't be daft. not in someone's home. Don't stay there if you don't like the facilities , that's the bit you have control over.

Just wedge something against the door like a towel or something if you are worried when showering.

Newrumpus · 03/04/2022 10:03

Drag furniture behind the door or stuff towels in the gap at the bottom of the door to stop it being opened. Failing that sing really loudly.

NearlyHeadlessNick · 03/04/2022 10:03

I get the light heartedness op Grin
My mum's is the same for the bathroom - to add insult to injury, the door doesn't even stay closed properly Shock

Rosebel · 03/04/2022 10:04

Don't come to my house 😁

Fimofriend · 03/04/2022 10:04

I think that no lock on bathroom doors is a red flag signalling an inability to respect boundaries. I would get someone to guard the door while I was using the bathroom.

Write 'occupied' on a piece of paper and stick it to the door.

Ofcourseinamechangedforthisyou · 03/04/2022 10:09

Don't have a lock on the door. Use the light switch as indication as to whether anyone is in, or just shout Billy Connelly style, "is anyone in?"

TheChurchOfEli · 03/04/2022 10:09

Next time you go take a door wedge and pop it on your room. When you need to loo / shower grab the wedge from your room and wedge it under the door so it stops anyone opening it from the outside. Although if you have an accident then it could stop people breaking down the door so…

LittleMissTeacup · 03/04/2022 10:10

I love @Antarcticant suggestion of writing ‘occupied’ - if I was you, I’d pack some post-it notes and a pen just for this!

WhatHaveIFound · 03/04/2022 10:10

For a while after we moved into a new house we had a bathroom without a locking door.

We used a soft toy dog as a guard dog. If it was outside the door
the bathroom was in use. Kids loved it.

SpringLobelia · 03/04/2022 10:14

Our new rescue cat hooked her paw into our loo yesterday morning and opened it to see what I was doing. Roughly the same time DS1 was walking past. Cue me racing for the door with my knickers around my ankles.

OP YANBU.

LimeSegment · 03/04/2022 10:15

Oh gosh yes! I'd vote for this. It's my nightmare when I go to people's houses. Worst time was at a friend's party, no lock on the bathroom and her mum walked in while I was on the toilet. Her mum was a bit drunk and instead of immediately leaving, she stood there saying "oh dear! oh dear!". I'm cringing thinking about it.

Nidan2Sandan · 03/04/2022 10:16

We took off our bathroom lock in the old house as my preschoolers kept locking themselves in and then not being able to unlock it.

We always meant to replace it but just never got around to it.

Nidan2Sandan · 03/04/2022 10:17

We moved last year to a house with 3 bathrooms, all have locks, and still none of us lock the doors Blush

The kids arent preschoolers anymore either.

mynameiscalypso · 03/04/2022 10:19

As someone with a toddler who has just learnt to open doors, I agree locks should be mandatory

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 03/04/2022 10:27

Sing very loudly.

ICantRideABike · 03/04/2022 10:30

We don’t have locks on the bathroom or toilet doors but whenever anyone comes round or stays over we tell them that we have an open door policy, in that if the door’s open it’s vacant and if the door’s closed it’s engaged. No embarrassing situations so far.

cataline · 03/04/2022 10:33

Aged 16, I was in the bath at my boyfriends house when his Dad walked in, followed by the neighbour who'd come to see the new bathroom!

I don't think I've ever got over the embarrassment!

HollowTalk · 03/04/2022 10:33

Get a door wedge from the supermarket for about £1.

ComDummings · 03/04/2022 10:35

Buy a doorstop and wedge the door shut when you go round. I do this in hotels so the room door can’t be opened even with a key card Grin

TheCanyon · 03/04/2022 10:35

Dd2 got locked in the bathroom when she was about 3, so I took the lock off for a year or so. I got locked in it last month and had to dismantle the handle, had to remove the snib bit so now it doesn't shut properly unless it's locked.

I'm away to screwfix today....
