To think this should be against the law

I'm staying at my inlaws this weekend. They don't have a lock on the shower room. I have a lightning fast shower, terrified of FIL walking in the entire time. He wouldn't do this on purpose but my kids would fling the door open without a second's thought of anyone else being nearby.

I was at a BBQ last year with about 20 other people. No lock on the bathroom door. Had to wee as quickly as possible in fear.

I think a lock, or some other method of indicating the room is occupied, should be a legal requirement punished with a fixed penalty fine of £100 or unlimited fine and 3 months in prison if the lack of lock results in someone seeing your bum.

I agree Grin I'd get bum freeze and not be able to have a poo knowing that someone could walk in
It's just wrong on so many levels

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/04/2022 10:37

We don’t have locks.
If the bathroom door is shut then the bathroom is in use.

FloralsForSpring · 03/04/2022 10:38

@WhatHaveIFound

For a while after we moved into a new house we had a bathroom without a locking door.

We used a soft toy dog as a guard dog. If it was outside the door
the bathroom was in use. Kids loved it.

That's great.

I believe it is for landlords in Scotland, except its 6 months imprisonment not 3. I live in fear of one of my bathroom door locks breaking Hmm

yorkshireteaspoonie · 03/04/2022 10:45

I concur. The worst is when you're at a BBQ or something and there's loads of people in and out of the house and could potentially be walked in on at any moment by a number of people. Dreadful.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 10:53

@Antarcticant

Write 'occupied' on a piece of paper and stick it to the door.
Absolutely

Tho I think it’s

chisanunian · 03/04/2022 10:54

Seeing your bum would be punishment enough, they wouldn't need a fine as well.

Agree OP, IMO there’s no excuse - especially if you’re going to be having guests. If there are young children who might lock themselves in, a bolt high up on the door does the job. Quick, easy and cheap, too.,

My lovely MiL once had a prolonged stay at her son and DiL’s house, while helping with childcare after a new baby. Not only was there no lock, there was no bathroom door! It had been removed for some reason months previously and they’d never got around to putting it back.
MiL was never a complainer, but she certainly had a little moan to me about that.

Oh, and when on a French exchange at 14, there was no lock on the bathroom door, but they assured me that ‘personne’ would enter while I was in there. Except that Monsieur once did, clad in only his saggy Y fronts and his David Niven moustache. Thankfully I was not right in the middle of my ‘proper’ wash, necessary since the small square bath was permanently full of stuff, evidently hardly ever used, and I was too young and stupid to ask them whether it was all right to empty it - not to mention the no-lock business.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 10:55

….. a not so subtle way of getting guests to leave long before they might need to 💩

As pp suggests, turn up with a laminated sign on a string with a pin and stick it in (see, it’s even poetic 🪶)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/04/2022 10:56

@RealRaymondReddington

Just wedge something against the door like a towel or something if you are worried when showering.
Yes or buy a small door wedge.

Your guests are ANXIOUS
Kendodd · 03/04/2022 10:58

You're to lenient op.
Straight to execution if they walk in and see bum.

Chely · 03/04/2022 10:59

Ours can easily be unlocked from outside, there is no escaping the children.

Youdoyoutoday · 03/04/2022 10:59

If people can see your bum whilst you're on the loo, you're doing it wrong Grin

Dreamworks · 03/04/2022 10:59

My bathroom door doesn't even shut properly let alone lock - hasn't been a problem so far or if it has no one has told me

SpeedofaSloth · 03/04/2022 11:00

Once visited a house where the loo door was GLAZED. FFS.

AngelicInnocent · 03/04/2022 11:01

Could be worse, my in laws house has glass bedroom doors!

FloralsForSpring · 03/04/2022 11:01

I went to a hotel like that. Utterly bizarre
RealBecca · 03/04/2022 11:01

Well would you phone the police about your FIL? Do you think that's more reasonable than a conversation?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 03/04/2022 11:02

MIL is that you???

In our old house none of the doors really closed properly, victorian, draughty, and the rule was if the door was shut to the frame then just knock and wait before entering.
However that wasn't good enough for them, they would haul the laundry basket over and barricade themselves in! Hmm

Given that they also would announce all bathroom visits and then cross examine us all in case we needed to go more urgently there really was no need to worry that they might be intruded upon!

One day the window was open and the door blew to and it took a headcount for us all to realise that no one was actually in there :o

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2022 11:03

I don't know why you wouldn't have bathroom/toilet door locks. All of ours you can use a coin to open them from the outside if needs be.
I hate visiting anywhere where there's no lock.

Door locks and a bathroom bin please.

Moody123 · 03/04/2022 11:06

Tie a tie round the door knob when occupied 😂

Oysterbabe · 03/04/2022 11:07

Ours at the same at home, can be opened from the outside.

I think guests will always want a locking door. Having a open door policy is all well and good but doesn't help if your house is full of randoms or children at a BBQ.

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 03/04/2022 11:08

DP and I regularly have this argument. He doesn't want a lock on the bathroom doors because he thinks the children will lock themselves in.

I think we could have one above where they could reach.

We're moving to a new house soon and I didn't check whether there are locks on the bathrooms Grin

I'm going to put one on the downstairs toilet and the master bathroom for guests comfort after reading this!

felulageller · 03/04/2022 11:09

So what if someone sees you?

Everyone goes. It's not a secret!
