To think this should be against the law

I'm staying at my inlaws this weekend. They don't have a lock on the shower room. I have a lightning fast shower, terrified of FIL walking in the entire time. He wouldn't do this on purpose but my kids would fling the door open without a second's thought of anyone else being nearby.

I was at a BBQ last year with about 20 other people. No lock on the bathroom door. Had to wee as quickly as possible in fear.

I think a lock, or some other method of indicating the room is occupied, should be a legal requirement punished with a fixed penalty fine of £100 or unlimited fine and 3 months in prison if the lack of lock results in someone seeing your bum.

"Not expecting boundaries is not knocking the door before you enter the bathroom."

  1. you have to be aware of this rule and
  2. you have to be used to it. If you're used to being able to just open the door, you won't be able to adapt straight away.

This is something that may work for a family, but not with guests too,

I once stayed in a holiday home with no lock on the door. We came up with a system of putting a plastic bag on the handle if it was occupied. Some people just didn't do it.

@NeverDropYourMooncup

A lock that opened with a coin was the type that malfunctioned and trapped DP in it. Happened to the family in the house next door, too - they're not fit for purpose.
We've had ours for years. They work fine-I have just checked them. Had to use it once I think.

Never had a lock on ours, & the door is old so doesn't really fit properly. It's never been an issue with guests - if door is wide open, the bathroom is free & otherwise not. It's really not difficult.

I couldn't cope. I'm a nervous wreck even if there is a lock, if the toilet is a long way from the door. Constantly expecting the door to burst open. Though in our house, the 11 year old is the only one who locks the door to the bathroom.

Sing very loud when in there so people know you are

Yea to the doorstop wedge.

Also, drag furniture from around the house and barricade yourself in.

I would hate this too.
