I hope that this is recent enough for those that were stating that my previous thread was too late and a duplicate.

lot of people are morally outraged. They want Will to be arrested, jailed and pretty much anything else you can think of. If this had been Robert Pattinson (sp?) it would less 'what a monster, will someone think about the children' and more 'poor man, a careless moment of rage, who amongst us has not' etc etc.

If RP or indeed any other white actor had strode into the stage and struck CR across the face in front of an audience of millions you think everyone would have made excuses for that? Absolute nonsense. There'd likely have been riots in the street and screaming endless headlines and discussion about how how this was clear evidence of systemic and institutional racism. Everyone knows this but shies away from saying it. A black man was violent to another black man and many who are invested in doing so for their own reasons are determined to find a way to to blame "whiteness" somehow or at least take the focus off the nature of the situation by chorusing "but what about if it was a white man?" It wasn't a white man so it's just pure, pointless whataboutism unless you're saying it to manipulate and ensure that everyone believes that "evil whiteness" is really to blame when it absolutely is not in this situation.

She has a good head of stubble for someone with alopecia and I say that as a sufferer myself who hasn't lost all my hair. Still unsure how GI Jane is an insult but ok 🥴

Diverseopinions · 02/04/2022 14:11

You have to vet jokes, if you're going to use the: "We're a family show", type of argument. I assume it was on too late to be pre-9pm watershed - or US watershed equivalent. But, if it is watched back by children, of course vet all jokes and tell comedians not to do total new-material Impromptus.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/04/2022 14:19

He said it was off the cuff so no-one knew he would say it before he did. But thinking about it, even if it had been scripted I doubt it would have been flagged as inappropriate by the people who decide these things.

Lbushsgkm · 02/04/2022 14:52

I was thinking that – I don’t think you would guess if you didn’t know, as she has stubble covering her scalp.
Diverseopinions · 02/04/2022 14:54

VladmirsPoutine

I guess.

Also, you can't really tell a comedian to keep a particular person's name out of his mouth. In an age in which most comedy is having a dig, what would jokes be about, if not about people, and the assumption is that the rich and famous can take it, having the cushion of privilege to buffer them against the cruelties of life. An Oscar nominee would be particularly buffeted, in that setting. The Academy ought to consider/ consult/ speak to those who know to find out if the joke ought to be told - but do it before the performance.

debbrianna · 02/04/2022 14:58

Yes she does. Her hair has been falling off, grows back and then it happens again and she had decided this time to not continue growing it. Most of the time jada wore the headscarfs was when she lost her hair.

Fraaahnces · 02/04/2022 15:02

Honestly, I think men see what they want to see. My DH and I nearly had a tiff about this. He was shocked that I “couldn’t understand him”. (Wouldn’t concede to his superior opinion.)

He thought WS was ace for “defending his woman.” I was gobsmacked. I asked when in the millions of years we’ve been together he had ever defended my honour. (Never.) I asked what he thought my response to him hitting anyone would be. He thought I’d be grateful. When he realised I was staring at him in horror he remembered that I grew up in a very violent household and it would frighten the shit out of me. Also, I am very capable of speaking for myself. I also asked if he had seen and understood everything that happened as the WS/CR drama played out. He assured me that he’d seen it many times. I asked if he honestly thought WS was defending Jada’s honour, or his OWN honour. I replayed the bit where WS was laughing at the joke until he saw Jada’s face - and she was looking at HIM. DH saw none of that until I showed him.

Doesn’t matter. One person’s insult can be another person’s compliment. She was insulted and that’s what matters.

He said it was off the cuff so no-one knew he would say it before he did.

I’d like to hear his reasoning and why he felt it was necessary. Why go after her appearance for a laugh?

Lilifer · 02/04/2022 15:17

@junglejane66

Violence is never acceptable, the man is a thug, end of
Agree - total thug
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/04/2022 15:28

And quite why he thought it acceptable to go off script when they go through all the faff of agreeing a script.

I’m not sure it was off the cuff. When there is apparently a history of previous digs, you would think that one was thought out and was always going to make it in.

So why didn’t he run it by the Academy?

We will probably never know. WS has been fairly vocal.

CR has been exceptionally quiet. I’d have thought more of him if he’d have apologised to JPS. For all to hear. Just like his poke.

But he did not/has not. And that says to me he is not sorry. And it wasn’t off the cuff at all.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/04/2022 15:28

This is going to be like Janet Jackson at the Superbowl. He's quit the academy but we still need a pound of flesh.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/04/2022 15:30

Ah. That was a pound or two of flesh bless her…

Yes. This reminds me of a boyfriend I liked a lot in my 20s.

We were on holiday and hanging out with a group of people we’d just met. One of them draped himself over me as we went down some stairs and was generally just a bit overbearing and boorish.

My bf at the time did nothing (which I was fine with) but later spoke to me to explain that he respected me and was certain I could handle the situation myself without him steaming in to throw his weight around. I really appreciated it and loved that about our relationship.

stuntbubbles · 02/04/2022 16:35

@HangingRock25 The show producer said it was improvised; initially he’d thought the slap was a “bit” and it was only when the swearing began he realised it wasn’t, and began to worry.

StrawberryPot · 02/04/2022 16:41

Still unsure how GI Jane is an insult

Not sure I've ever seen the film but I gather Jane shaves her head as part of her effort to defeminise herself in order to fit in better with the male soldiers. Ie to make herself look masculine. So you could probably infer from that that CR was saying Jada looks masculine.

PinkSyCo · 02/04/2022 16:48

Too little too late.

stuntbubbles · 02/04/2022 17:01

Still unsure how GI Jane is an insult but ok
From the rhythm of the joke – Javier Bardem,
nominated; Penelope Cruz, nominated; Will Smith, nominated; Jada Pinkett-Smith, GI Jane 2, I.e. not nominated and, lol, probably in a shit sequel to a shit film – I interpreted it as less about her looks and more a career dig, but velvet glove with the “love you, can’t wait to see it”, to get away with it.

EinsteinaGogo · 02/04/2022 17:03

@SquirrelG

Oh God, who cares. The amount of shit that usually flies under the radar and gets ignored. Will Smith slaps someone on stage and all hell breaks loose

I agree. It's nothing to do with any of us, most of us have more to worry about - and it's such a non-event (or would be if people didn't keep going on, and on, and on about it).

It genuinely astonishes me that some people think this is a 'non-event'.

@SquirrelG
Can you describe what your interpretation of non-event is, please?

StrawberryPot · 02/04/2022 17:16

@stuntbubbles - oh that sounds more plausible

EinsteinaGogo · 02/04/2022 17:16

Jada's daughter Willow has a shaved head, which is nothing to do with Alopecia nor solidarity for her mum.

I think it's 100 percent possible that Chris Rock had no idea Jada's hair wasn't purely choice reasons.

Will Smith resigns from the Academy
debbrianna · 02/04/2022 17:33

Jada didn't wear weave. What's wrong with people.

Vanillalatteplease · 02/04/2022 17:41

I'm still astounded that mumsnet posters care so much about this story. Smart arsed comic makes jokes, jumped up actor who's probably consumed to much champagne & blow gives him a slap. Boo hoo he's had to resign from the Academy (whatever the fuck that entails). Chris Rock seems like a pretty thick skinned guy & he'll get a whole tour out of this material & make millions. Will & Jada will continue to make their awful self indulgent show & also make millions rehashing the nights events. Also can we stop saying Will Smith is a role model to young people. From speaking to my kids friends this week most people under 25 only really have a vague idea who he is.

phoenixrosehere · 02/04/2022 18:47

What show? The only one I know of is the one Jada has with her mother and daughter and I wouldn’t call that one self-indulgent by any means.
