I hope that this is recent enough for those that were stating that my previous thread was too late and a duplicate.

I enjoy films but I don't follow gossip
I had no idea about Red Table or who was doing what in their personal life till I saw the Oscars

It came as a surprise to me that they parade their private stuff that way. They have enough clout in Hollywood to make tons of money. So what is all that public chat for?

I often wonder if it's part of a mass hysteria, especially after the last two years.

Fraaahnces · 02/04/2022 02:02

@Abouttoblow - because unless it was Chris Rock, it’s utterly irrelevant to this situation.

LondonWolf · 02/04/2022 02:03

I really struggle with the idea that CR's tepid joke is seen to be on a level with being belted across the face in front of all his peers, and an international audience of millions.

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 02:03

(And if he struggles with non-verbal communication then a slap in the face while working must be completely traumatising. You don’t get much more non-verbal than actual violence.)

yzed · 02/04/2022 02:05

Obviously there's no way that the physical violence was the right reaction. But Rock was rude and ill-advised in his "joke". I know they're all actors, but if you saw Jada's face you'd see she was very hurt.

And to add to that, Rock's previous "joke" was pretty unsavoury, too.

If anyone's to blame for this, then it's whoever chose Rock for that role!

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 02:05

Agreed.

It’s not a line of argument that makes sense unless the arguer is absolutely desperate to defend WS.

Why?

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 02/04/2022 02:11

@ENoeuf

CR says he doesn’t have Aspergers - a friend suggested he did, he got assessed and was diagnosed with non verbal learning disorder which I don’t recognise in the UK but basically means a lack of understanding of body language. I saw an interview clip where he talked about it.
NVLD is on the same spectrum as Autism and Aspergers. I have a son with NVLD.
Momijin · 02/04/2022 02:13

What is the academy and what will that mean?

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 02:16

@Momijin

What is the academy and what will that mean?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_of_Motion_Picture_Arts_and_Sciences

The Academy of Motion Pictures award the Oscars (Academy Awards.)

Membership is prestigious and by invitation only.

lborgia · 02/04/2022 02:38

@ohwhatadayitsbeen - I agree that there is a lot behind it.

WS had already stated that it was a prerequisite of their marriage that there would be "no profanity" what so ever from either of them. IIRC, it was no profanity and no drinking.

He grew up in an abusive household, and has a complete horror of drunken violence and swearing.

So I reckon this very much boiled up from deep under the facade, and yes, as I've said on another thread, this was all about how HE felt, and how it made HIM look; Jada just being a reflection of his own image and success.

I'm glad he's resigned, but it's a bit "did he fail, or was he pushed?".

sweetbellyhigh · 02/04/2022 02:44

@Dishh

First of all it's not known as Asperger's anymore, it is autism.

Secondly it isn't a medical condition/illness.

Jeez

sweetbellyhigh · 02/04/2022 02:46

Love Chris Rock, loved Everybody Hates Chris, and when I went to a live show I laughed so hard I was genuinely afraid I'd have a cardiac arrest.

Plenty of people who I think are arses, including a fairly high percentage of posters on this thread 🤔 but that doesn't mean I get to stride up and slap them.

get a life....Like Radcliffe says, who really gives a fuck about anyones opinion on this , (apart from you of course)

RustyShackleford3 · 02/04/2022 03:05

I think this has done wonders for Will's career.

I didn't even know he was up for an award, or that the Oscars were happening.

Now he's all over the press, he's giving speeches, he's resigned from the Academy (whatever that means).

It's the most attention he's had in years

I didn't bring it up - jeez. Read back a few posts.

Im2022 · 02/04/2022 04:47

What does it mean to resign? Does it matter? How will it affect him? Does he give the Oscar back? Is he not allowed to work again?

I’m finding this whole thing hilarious. I mean I don’t care, but the drama is good.

LBFseBrom · 02/04/2022 05:26

Who cares, honestly?

Longdistance · 02/04/2022 05:28

Resigned? Or his hand was forced?

2021s · 02/04/2022 05:30

I’m shocked and saddened that rock is being hailed as some sort of victim here and especially by women- he publicly humiliated a woman for her appearance due to her medical condition- he should also resign. What smith did was very wrong and he by resigning he is standing up and facing his sins but Rock should do the same and should not be supported and validated. Appalling that what he did is acceptable and not only acceptable but being portrayed as a victim. Smith was standing up for his sick wife, in the wrong way obviously but essentially that’s what he was doing, rock was appearance shaming a sick woman and getting away with it.

LBFseBrom · 02/04/2022 05:41
**@EmmaH2022* I thought Will Smith was Oscar worthy in "The Pursuit of Happyness" - a fab film.*

Agreed. I thought that he was incredible in iRobot too.

It’s a shame that this incident may very well take away from his extraordinary work that he has done in film.
It won't, he'll be back and forgiven before too long.

Chris Rock, whom I didn't know from Adam before this incident, was a bit insensitive with his joke but the sort of thing not at all unusual from a comedian compere to a celebrity audience, in that sort of setting. I have to say I didn't get what the joke was about but I haven't seen GI Jane. However I gather Jada Smith has had hair loss problems (still astonishingly good looking), and GI Jane was bald. A tasteless joke but I've certainly heard worse.

No doubt Will Smith was out of order, goodness knows what got into him that made him resort to physical violence.

However it's over, Will has resigned, no doubt will return in time, life goes on. It's hardly worth getting worked up about now. Nobody has died.

sweetbellyhigh · 02/04/2022 05:44

@Dishh

You called it a medical condition. Read your own posts 🙄

Very confused post.

Will Smith committed an offence in full view of the world.

A mess of his own meaning that has hurt a lot of people.

In case you missed it, Chris Rock was the person who was assaulted. That makes him the victim. And no amount of handwringing or wishful thinking will change that.

All you are doing is infantilising JPS and victim blaming Chris Rock.

custardbear · 02/04/2022 06:06

I wonder if he'd have hit him if it were The Rock who said it rather than Chris Rock!
I'm surprised Will got the opportunity to resign rather than being kicked out
It's a shame though as black actors getting Oscar's is so rare, but then it's his own doing
