I hope that this is recent enough for those that were stating that my previous thread was too late and a duplicate.

@LuckySantangelo35

Don’t know what’s with all the sympathy for Chris rock. He made a tacky, tasteless, insensitive and unfunny joke and not for the first time. If that is the way you work, you have to be prepared for some people to get pretty pissed off with you 🤷‍♀️
I am inclined to agree with you somewhat. The thing is, had that been a non-comedian making that joke, I do not think that Will would have reacted in the same way. But because it was Chris, who apparently was warned prior to this show about making jokes about the Smiths, Will felt that it was okay to approach the stage and physically assault him. That’s wrong. Regardless of who it is. Will was in the wrong and needs to be reprimanded for his actions.

@bonfireheart

Who really cares apart from the people involved?
Perhaps people who watch movies?
Dishh · 02/04/2022 01:12

@Thoosa

I hope Chris Rock is okay. Apparently he has Aspergers, I read this week. I always have liked him. So some of these shenanigans must seem wildly illogical to him from his vantage point in the middle of it all. I hope the resignation helps him feel some justice has been done.

I think I’m going to watch “Everbody hates Chris” again as a treat to myself, and in support of him. I’ll buy the box set of it’s available. EHC also features the lovely Terry Crews so win-win.

You think that's an excuse for making an off-colour joke about a medical condition? I really hope not.

I do hope you're going to be fair and post this on all the other threads here it could also apply to @bonfireheart. Better get started, there's a lot

I hadn't heard this. What effect does it actually have? Doesn't make a difference to the Oscar win, right?

EmmaH2022 · 02/04/2022 01:13

I agree, something else is going on
I feel for both of them

I think Chris Rock was very professional in how he continued

I'm puzzled at reports the Academy didn't have a way to cover a live show if they had removed Will. There must be provision to play something pre recorded as any number of things could go wrong.

I'm glad Smith mentions attention being removed from nominees. So pleased Questlove won his category.

I thought Will Smith was Oscar worthy in "The Pursuit of Happyness" - a fab film.

I’m not entirely sure, I think that’s what everyone is waiting to find out. In my personal opinion, it shouldn’t. Because he won his accolade fair and square. But hey, this is 2022. Anything is possible I guess

Agreed. A true professional.

Agreed. I thought that he was incredible in iRobot too.

It’s a shame that this incident may very well take away from his extraordinary work that he has done in film.

Why was it tasteless? Who knew about Jada having alopecia. Only one person in my circle of friends. Like most people we all thought the shaved head was a fashion statement or for a movie role.

And why was CR warned not to make jokes about the Smiths. What makes them so special?

Whatever,it’s still not acceptable for anyone to commit to violence as Smith did
Thoosa · 02/04/2022 01:27

No I think his “excuse” for making a tasteless joke is that that is what the Academy has wanted in recent years; “Roast” style presentation, insulting jokes aimed at the stars, because apparently they think that is what pulls in the viewers. I think that’s a misjudgement on the part of the Academy and was only ever going to lead to trouble, but it is the brief they’ve given presenters in recent years.

So I think Chris Rock was fulfilling his brief. Or thought he was. I do also happen to believe he didn’t know about JPS’s alopecia, maybe he should have paid for better research, but it’s by the by, because even if he knew, and was knowingly that offensive, a violent reaction was completely unacceptable.

The Aspergers claim did immediately ring true to me in terms of CR’s very obviously shell shocked reaction over recent days to the whole unfolding debacle. Again, that’s a side issue.

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 01:30

Yes what’s that all about? I hadn’t heard that.

Roast-style ceremonies are even more nonsensical if there’s an “untouchables” list.

Lbushsgkm · 02/04/2022 01:31

He brought it on himself and I was appalled at the whole thing, but nonetheless, I feel sorry for him. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of success.

It should have been the pinnacle of his career to date, a moment of immense pride and triumph, the achievement of a lifetime.

Instead he’s resigning from the academy.

The whole incident was ugly and it is right he is taking responsibility for his behaviour in some measure.

The whole thing just seems sad.

@DeeCeeCherry You said you're new here so I guess you just joined to go on about Will Smith

Unlike you pet, we are not all consistently reading the mumsnet boards daily, so anyone can start any thread they want and some people will see it for the first time. The world is bigger than you can believe.

Agreed with the roast-style presentation; they are difficult to watch (not that I have in recent years). As for the Asperger claim: do you have a source for that?

Fraaahnces · 02/04/2022 01:40

I disagree @runnerblade95…. WS was laughing at the joke until he saw Jada’s response to HIS response. It was THEN that he went all Hulk to overcompensate for being a dick laughing at what was ultimately a bad-taste joke at his wife’s expense. (*I’m not a fan of that “roasting” style of humour. It’s publicly-condoned bullying, and I find it really uncomfortable watching people being humiliated.)

Oh God, who cares.
The amount of shit that usually flies under the radar and gets ignored.
Will Smith slaps someone on stage and all hell breaks loose

People are entitled to get pissed off with him.

People are not entitled to physically assault him.

Get it right - Pet.

The thread was put up tonight. Not in the daytime. Hence why it was noticeable.

CR says he doesn’t have Aspergers - a friend suggested he did, he got assessed and was diagnosed with non verbal learning disorder which I don’t recognise in the UK but basically means a lack of understanding of body language. I saw an interview clip where he talked about it.

VivienneDelacroix · 02/04/2022 01:51

We'll all find out what he and Jada have to say soon enough, she'll do an episode of Red Table Talks.

I agree. It's nothing to do with any of us, most of us have more to worry about - and it's such a non-event (or would be if people didn't keep going on, and on, and on about it).

Abouttoblow · 02/04/2022 01:57

I genuinely don't understand why everyone ignores the fact that Jada opened up about sleeping with someone else and the feelings she developed for that person, saying her husband was OK with it. On a podcast with her husband, who was clearly not OK with it.

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 02:01

@Dishh I can’t remember where I originally read it. A quick Google suggests his diagnosis is actually “NVLD” which is a new one on me but is said to have similarities to ASCs. I’ll read if properly tomorrow but it does ring true to me that he isn’t neurotypical (not being neurotypical myself).
