I hope that this is recent enough for those that were stating that my previous thread was too late and a duplicate.

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

For someone new, you’ve mastered the snarky response admirably.

Well done.

And finding those pesky small yet essential items of clothing that go on your feet before your shoes I'd say.

You called it a medical condition. Read your own posts 🙄
I called alopecia a medical condition, not Asperger's.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 02/04/2022 06:17

@2021s

I’m shocked and saddened that rock is being hailed as some sort of victim here and especially by women- he publicly humiliated a woman for her appearance due to her medical condition- he should also resign. What smith did was very wrong and he by resigning he is standing up and facing his sins but Rock should do the same and should not be supported and validated. Appalling that what he did is acceptable and not only acceptable but being portrayed as a victim. Smith was standing up for his sick wife, in the wrong way obviously but essentially that’s what he was doing, rock was appearance shaming a sick woman and getting away with it.
Why do you think Rock isn't a victim? He's a victim of assault, that many many people saw.
TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/04/2022 06:34

What does resigning from the Academy actually mean?

Will he still be in films? Or not certain films?

stuntbubbles · 02/04/2022 07:56

@RustyShackleford3

I think this has done wonders for Will's career.

I didn't even know he was up for an award, or that the Oscars were happening.

Now he's all over the press, he's giving speeches, he's resigned from the Academy (whatever that means).

It's the most attention he's had in years

What?! He had plenty of attention, what with the best actor nomination and now win. Just because it took this to bring him on your radar doesn’t mean it’s a good thing – it’s entirely possible his career was in top flight even if a random Mumsnetter wasn’t aware of it.
balalake · 02/04/2022 07:58

I expect it is resign instead of being kicked out.

He can’t vote in future Oscars, won’t be sent screeners, a general lack of prestige, unlikely to be invited back for a loooooooong time even though traditionally best actor winners come back for the victory tour the following year.

What films he’s in is a separate issue but the fallout from this will obviously affect it.

ENoeuf · 02/04/2022 08:03

I agree it’s jump before a push, makes it easier for nothing else to be done and he can go an a ‘poor me’ round of talk shows and redeem himself.

londonrach · 02/04/2022 08:07

Can someone explain to me which it means to resign in this situation. Does that mean he does get rewards etc. Sorry no idea what this means

yourlegmyleg · 02/04/2022 08:08

Aren't the Smith's Scientologists? That was my immediate thought when I saw the other a-listers clamouring to support Will, and the fact he wasn't removed. 🤷‍♀️

Juniper68 · 02/04/2022 08:11

@PupInAPram

He has set a terrible example to children who admire him because of his movie and TV roles. If you don't like something, deal with it with physical violence🙄
Spot on. Totally gone off him now and I really liked him.

Don’t think so. I’d heard they have an open marriage, don’t think that fits with Scientology.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/04/2022 08:27

@RewildingAmbridge

Huge cop out. This has been handled appallingly from the get go
I thought a 'get go' was some some of scaly lizardy-thing.

Have you inadvertly let the cat out of the bag that the Academy is run by those extraterrestrial reptiles, like the Royal Family are alledged to be?

Shock and Confused

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 02/04/2022 08:28

Didn't Chris Rock make a documentary about black women and their hair and culture around it?

That's why this 'joke' was particularly insensitive, cruel and nasty.

Glad Will has resigned

Neither of them come out of this with any glory.

Pair of toxic masculine dickheads.

saleorbouy · 02/04/2022 08:41

Live by the sword, die by the sword! At least he has had the presence of mind to appreciate the gravity of his actions on live T.V. to the world.
The joke made about his wife was below the belt but his reaction was ugly and seemed out of touch with her reaction.

Alternatively it supports the claims that he had no idea about the alopecia diagnosis, nor that JPS’s buzz cut was anything other than a bold style choice from a strong (and absolutely stunning) black woman.

To choose to highlight the issues around the meaning of hair for WoC, then be aware that JPS had hair loss issues and THEN undermine all his own good work by making a nasty joke about her hair would be a completely nonsensical choice.

The kind of men who would joke about a black woman’s hairloss really aren’t the same men who make documentaries about black hair culture.

Libertybear80 · 02/04/2022 08:50

Chris Rock was after cheap laughs about someone's medical condition. I have little sympathy for him.

Will Smith looked like he was having a mid life crisis. We will probably hear they are getting divorced in 3 weeks time.

That's as much brain space as I'm giving these shallow fools!

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 08:52

Oh FFS @PAFMO and @LaMarschallin stop troll hunting. If you think anyone is sockpuppeting, report it. The snark is getting really old.

Sharrowgirl · 02/04/2022 09:09

What’s the significance of being in or out of the Academy for an actor? What does membership actually involve?

HangingRock25 · 02/04/2022 09:23

@DeeCeeCherry

Lbushsgkm twilightcustard *@DeeCeeCherry* You said you're new here so I guess you just joined to go on about Will Smith*

Unlike you pet, we are not all consistently reading the mumsnet boards daily, so anyone can start any thread they want and some people will see it for the first time. The world is bigger than you can believe.

Get it right - Pet.

The thread was put up tonight. Not in the daytime. Hence why it was noticeable.

Learn to read before you bluster

@DeeCeeCherry No one said it was put up in the daytime, so you misread their posts.
@Dishh

First of all it's not known as Asperger's anymore, it is autism.

Secondly it isn't a medical condition/illness.

Jeez
@sweetbellyhigh It is still referred to as Aspergers in many places, in many medical settings and in several countries. It's the official medical terminology. Autism and Aspergers are different. Aspergers is more specific meaning High Functioning Autism. Autism (or ASD) is a general umbrella term that encompasses non-verbal and severe developmental and cognitive issues as well as in between. I have Aspergers.

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 09:37

Why do people think that the dropping of “Aspergers” was retroactive? Confused

They dropped it from the DSMV as an available diagnosis for new assessments. They didn’t revoke all the thousands of existing diagnoses out there, or erase the word and concept from history and culture.

Personally I prefer the term Aspergers as it’s helpfully distinct from Autism generally (and the stuff about Nazis is such irrational guff, only a neurotypical could have made it a debating point).

Thoosa · 02/04/2022 09:39

X post @HangingRock25

Everything you said. ✊🏼

That’ll teach me to refresh the page after making coffee.

@Sharrowgirl

It means absolutely nothing.

It just means he won't vote, and will not be invited to special screenings.

He can get nominated and win oscars in the future.

Have not been seeing that much of him lately. Saw Gemini Man and Bad Boys lately. Nearing 60, his action hero days were numbered anyway. I also think he was busy with his production company, which he will carry on with. He also apparently has a successful show on Peacock - though I only recently head of this.
