I've come home to 2 terrified rabbits sitting in a cage in my garden. The bloody things were surrounded by the billion cats that live here who are fascinated.

I've relocated them to a very old rickety hutch from when we had rabbits a million years ago and chucked them some hay, carrots and water and told the DSs at least 72 times that we are not keeping them whilst they fight over names.

CCTV shows a woman dropping them over the gate. She obviously didn't realise I've got CCTV and I have a nice clear view of her face.

I mean I clearly won't be returning the rabbits but WIBU to stick her on Facebook in a "what the hell were you doing" post?

OP posts:

@Westpoint

I don't get these responses?!

Why on earth would the woman who dumped them reply to you on Facebook? She'd just keep her head down surely?

Unless she's worried her friends will recognise them and tag her.
AuntieMaggie · 27/03/2022 06:49

I agree with 15Gizacluethen - send her a copy of the picture of the woman putting them in your garden asking if she recognises who it is as you're going to try to track them down...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/03/2022 10:30

Sooo, BlueEyes how are the rabbits this morning ?

You need to get out their with your grass cutting scissors and get them some fresh breakfast .

If you're going to keep them , they'll cost you ££ to set them up , though often on local WhatsApp groups there's people giving away /selling hutches and runs .
If your hutch is rickety , you really need to repair or replace it , there's foxes round here with young and they will do pretty much anything to get a meal .

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/03/2022 12:04

@milkyaqua

I spend much of my time protecting my chickens from stalking cats. No-one believes they can and will and do kill chickens.
I've seen it the other way round where the unsuspecting cat gets battered by the angry dinosaurs.

A mob of Rhode Islands with a right cob on is a sight to behold. Just one full grown hen is bigger than one of mine - she wouldn't stand a chance against three.

Anyhow, how are the new additions to the menagerie, OP?

mrbreezeet1 · 27/03/2022 17:38

I feel sorry for the rabbits. :-( the cats will try to kill them :-(

ChrisInTheNorth · 27/03/2022 17:41

I agree... Facebook doesn't seem to be the answer.... looking for a solution that de-escalates the situation like asking the RSPA for help seems to be a better way to go

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 27/03/2022 17:49

@LBFseBrom

Cats don't hurt rabbits for goodness sake, it's natural for them to be fascinated but no harm is intended.

I had a rabbit and cats; one of my cats formed an attachment to the rabbit, it was really sweet, they ran around playing together. Unfortunately it all ended when the rabbit tried to mate with my cat.

Foxes will prey on a rabbit but if the hutch is secure, it will be all right.

You have not met my cat
Sheepish79 · 27/03/2022 17:50

Try contacting rabbit rescue or ask/ phone your local vet for their number or they might know someone locally who takes in abandoned rabbits. It is amazing how many small specialist charities there are around

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/03/2022 17:52

how very odd

LaurieFairyCake · 27/03/2022 17:53

Those rabbits are adorable 🥰

Realitea · 27/03/2022 17:56

Please contact a rabbit rescue - or join the Facebook group ‘rabbit support group’ for help. Rabbits need lots of space and a predator proof run connected to a hutch or playhouse/shed - about 60 square foot in total. They need unlimited Timothy hay. Carrots are high in sugar and shouldn’t be given too often. Where abouts in the uk are you op?

Lbushsgkm · 27/03/2022 18:02

Don’t post the video on Facebook, to achieve what? Vitriol directed at her? It’s a shitty thing to do, and you don’t know at this point what’s happened or what prompted her to do it.

There was a post on our local Facebook group a few years ago where some irate person posted a video of a woman with a dog who pooed on their drive.

A long thread of outrage and pisstaking followed, with the woman inevitably being identified, named and vilified.

It turned out she was a pensioner with weak wrists dog-sitting for her son and wasn’t able to fully control the movement of the (otherwise well-behaved) animal.

Hardly worthy of a witch hunt, and yet a pretty bruising experience for her, and also not great for the person who got shirty and posted it (with probably many people locally remembering the names and faces involved in that incident).

Cavementality · 27/03/2022 18:58

She might be fleeing from DV and out of desperation left her beloved rabbits in your garden hoping that you'd take care of them.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Please don't shame her on FB as she might be vulnerable. X

Eve76 · 27/03/2022 19:06

As tempting as it maybe to post the vid of FB I’d report her to the rspca or the police that will give her the most agro . If nothing comes of it then I’d post to FB because like you Id be pretty pissed off to I despise animal cruelty

Catclean · 27/03/2022 19:25

"Cats don't hurt rabbits for goodness sake, it's natural for them to be fascinated but no harm is intended."

Tell that to my cat... regularly seen dragging a dead rabbit in her jaws. In her defence she's a yard cat.

vinoinveritas · 27/03/2022 19:30

Yes this is definitely the best aoproach

Mandyjack · 27/03/2022 19:32

If you know who she is why don't you ask her?

Mandyjack · 27/03/2022 19:34

What you could do instead is post a picture of the 2 rabbits to see if anyone is missing some

cabbageking · 27/03/2022 19:36

Contact the RSPCA.

You have the info, pass it on and let them do their job. Don't warn her of the evidence by posting anything

RavenhairedRachel · 27/03/2022 19:42

Deffo name and shame.it may stop any one selling this woman another pet to dump on someone else when she gets fed-up of them

doingmydoodie · 27/03/2022 19:45

At least read the OP's posts.

@BlueEyesWhiteDragon

I'm not going to go all gung ho on Facebook. I was just annoyed. I'd come in harassed, we've dealt with a literal ton of fly tipping this week, and then I nearly tripped over the pair of them because I wasn't looking. I've chilled a bit now and I admit they kind of cute.

I've posted saying we've had 2 rabbits left at house in error anyone missing any. All polite and cheery on the outside with a seething centre on the inside lol.

I'm currently still saying they not staying but I am sitting in the garden watching them explore the run I've just borrowed from chap down road and am treating myself to a a cup of tea and a KitKat.

DS2 wants to call them Stew and Pot - he thinks he's hilarious. DS1 wants to call the brown one Choco and will conceded to pot for the other.

It's been ages since we've had rabbits. We'd have to make them a pen and all the bloody front is artifical grass now. They'd either have to go in the field or we'd have to returf some of the front.

You will need to remove the rolled turf, if they eat any when it's starting to turn bad it will cause gas, bloat their stomachs and potentially kill them. Don't give cut grass either.

Have you kept rabbits before? They have very delicate tummy's and need a much bigger run than you would imagine, at least 4 foot high by 6 feet long with a raised bedding area, but the bigger the better incase you decide to keep them. And they will need to be vaccinated against myxomatosis and VHD yearly.

Learningstill · 27/03/2022 20:02

I haven’t read through all the thread so I apologise if I have got information wrong and repeating things.

I would add that I’m a normal (I think) person with nothing to gain by being awkward

SO
WHY would a “random” woman put caged rabbits in your garden???

More to this than meets the eye methinks!!

ASundayWellSpent · 27/03/2022 20:03

Same thing happened to us a few years ago on Halloween. A distant neighbour dumped three kittens in my garden as they knew that I volunteer at the animal shelter and wouldn't turn them away. Also had CCTV on them pulling up in their car, shoving one under the gate and chucking the other two over the fence.

Sillyname63 · 27/03/2022 20:06

I don't think she has dumped them, more likely delivered to the wrong address, I would do what Crosstalk said and ask If anyone was waiting for some rabbits to be delivered or for the person who delivered to know they have dropped off a the wrong house could they contact you to take them back. Like you I have found the RSPCA to be unhelpful. Could try your local Vet. They may know someone who takes in stray animals.
