I've come home to 2 terrified rabbits sitting in a cage in my garden. The bloody things were surrounded by the billion cats that live here who are fascinated.

I've relocated them to a very old rickety hutch from when we had rabbits a million years ago and chucked them some hay, carrots and water and told the DSs at least 72 times that we are not keeping them whilst they fight over names.

CCTV shows a woman dropping them over the gate. She obviously didn't realise I've got CCTV and I have a nice clear view of her face.

I mean I clearly won't be returning the rabbits but WIBU to stick her on Facebook in a "what the hell were you doing" post?

This reminds me of the dead bat through the letterbox thing on twitter the other day. Mistaken identity - meant to go to the bat lady, accidentally ended up next door!

I've told you a billion times not to exaggerate.

Why are you so angry? I don't think it is just about the rabbits.

@BlueEyesWhiteDragon

You really need to come on over to Small Pets (under Pets topic) loads of Rabbit Advice on there .
Diet , safe accomodation recommendations, caccines , neutering etc.

Even if they are two does they still need spayed to reduce the risk of uterine cancer .
Two same sex rabbits arent the best match . (Ok they don't breed but they might not get on)
Bucks need castrated for behaviour amongst other things .
(Guinea-pigs are sooo much easier )

If your thread title had been "Someone has dumped two random rabbits in a cage in my garden" the answers would've been quite different .
Same end result though.....You've Got Rabbits !

A hutch with two rabbits in, dumped in your garden without so much as a by your leave? Post on Facebook NOW, this woman needs help. God knows what state she is in. Not posting risks not getting her thehelp she clearly needs.

I hope this is a great joke.
LizzyA123 · 28/03/2022 18:15

They might be at the “require neutering” age.

@BlueEyesWhiteDragon

Sorry didn't realise there had been more posts.

Just to update.

I have no idea if the woman I spoke to on Facebook is the original owner or not. Her story doesn't make sense , but whether that's becase she is just someone being odd or she is the one that left them I don't know. I've heard nothing more from her since Saturday my follow up message is left unread.

I have already contacted the RSPCA and am awaiting an inspector to get in touch.

We obviously keeping them because we are idiots and are going to build them a walk in run at the weekend as clearly the recommended way to keep rabbits has changed somewhat from what I remember. For now they in the hutch and run and have got hay, water and some dandelion leaves and seen content enough.

Thank you for being a responsible rabbit owner. So often I hear "it's only a rabbit it will be fine" when I mention their needs. I would look into vaccination asap though, before summer kicks in, you don't want them due boosters August to November as that's when it's at its worst, I lost a bun to myxi because her immunity was waning, caught it the week her booster was booked for. Now is a good time for boosters.

Much the same when I get on my high horse about incorrectly housed fish, "it's only a fish" annoys me so much too.

ToffeeMamma · 28/03/2022 21:28

Maybe not 100% responsible but I've had something similar. I have 8 rabbits in cages in garden along with a couple of spare cages for when we have babies. A guy in a hoody carried a pair of babies probably about 12 weeks old in my garden again like yours caught on CCTV he carried them in a travel carrier and put them into an empty cage. Threw a pile of dandelion leaves in and left a note saying something along the lines "We bought female rabbit not realising she was pregnant. We only have room for one and could only manage to re-home 1 baby please look after the other two they are 12 weeks old". I can remember my husband being put out but then I pointed out that at least he'd been responsible enough to make sure they were put where someone would find them and with food to last until I checked on mine and that he could see my own were looked after well. He could have chosen to let them go outside somewhere where they had no chance of survival. I'd happily allow anyone to drop off a pet they were unable to manage and take it in if I was able too rather then them suffer. The lady who dropped yours off probably didn't think through the fact the cats could access the travel cage, maybe she saw the empty hutch and hoped they'd be looked after. Not 100% responsible but you don't know her circumstances and she may have had no choice but to get rid and didn't know what else to do. If you don't want to keep themrehome them if you do win win.

Roo4u · 29/03/2022 07:24

@37LBFseBrom yes they do I know from experience

DuchessofSuffolk · 29/03/2022 16:52

Take them to a vet. If they are a loved pet they will be chipped, mine are. If not, then the vet should surely be able to assist with rehoming

Honeyroar · 29/03/2022 22:39

They don’t need rehoming, the op is keeping them.

When I got my rabbits chipped the vet doing it said it’s very rare for rabbits to be chipped generally. To the extent they barely bother scanning them for chips if people bring ones they’ve found them in.

Roxy69 · 30/03/2022 00:07

Trial by facebook - really? Just shows how remote we are from reality these days. The ordinary way would be to speak to any rescue centre. Who knows why she dumped the rabbits but you have to think of the animals and get them sorted asap.

TheRobotsAreComing · 30/03/2022 11:12

Thanks for being compassionate and keeping them. I have 2 buns myself and even after extensively researching how to keep them, I still didn't realise the care that goes into it. Its bloody hard work! They bring the family a lot of joy though so its worth the graft.

I can imagine they are 'lockdown' rabbits and the owners couldn't hack it. Rescues are at capacity sadly because of this but not fair that she's left them with you. Hope they settle in well.
