To ask what you’re doing awake post-midnight? Part 3: Return of the Insomnia

Hey all - We’ve made it to the third thread. Whether you’ve posted before or you’re brand new, if you’re stuck awake, then you’re welcome here. We’ve had people facing it all on the last few threads: grief (loss of DPs, DHs, parents, children, and pets), illness of every sort (cancer, COVID, post COVID, sciatica, antidepressant withdrawals, stomach bugs of every sort, cold/flu, autoimmune problems, and even more diagnoses), ill children and partners (vomiting, crying, unable to sleep… and that’s just the adult family members! Ok I’m kidding, that was mostly the kids), women in labor, women with surgery fears, fears of all other sizes, anxiety, work anxiety, and of course insomnia caused by myriad things (LOTS of peri and postmenopausal insomnia).

Whatever is keeping you awake, you’re always welcome to share it here.

If you’re following in from our last thread, it’s:

Hello fellow awake club. My being on Mumsnet won’t help me sleep; alas, here I am.

I posted on a previous thread. No real reason to be awake. I think I work so much in the week I don’t want to spend a minute of my own time sleeping.

I suppose the real reason to be awake is reaching burnout.

I’m rambling so hope the other insomniacs manage some rest as I’m turning off. The light of my phone doesn’t help.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 26/03/2022 01:33

I'm waiting to finish my twilight shift at work 27 mins to go!

Sciurus83 · 26/03/2022 02:32

Covid. With a poorly 3 month old and a 3 year old with me in bed (baby in side sleeper) who probably have it too. The night feed at its most challenging.

Wallywobbles · 26/03/2022 03:27

My usual 4am wake up hear. CGM monitor decided I was dying. I'm not. Covid in the house and colds. I'm in category 2. If we are going to be sick it needs to be now as we leave for Spain on 16th April.

Masks off is not working out in France. I think we will be back in them v soon.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 26/03/2022 03:40

Day 4 covid and still feeling dreadful

AFS1 · 26/03/2022 04:18

Stressed about work. Wondering about actually getting up and doing a couple of hours work now. Would be a more productive thing to do than lie awake worrying about it.

But my bed is warm and comfy and there’s the possibility I might fall back to sleep eventually…

Desiredeffect · 26/03/2022 04:31

Hi everyone well I'm awake every 2 hours due to sleep apnea. Waiting. On a hospital appointment for the sleep xlinic. Gp said I need a cpap machine which I'm dreading. Hope you all get some sleep soon. This sucks big time

AudTheDeepMinded · 26/03/2022 04:35

Hello my people! Been awake since 3.30 am. At deceased FIL's house doing some clearing and the bloody heating kicked in. It's BOILING, the heat and the noise of the boiler woke me up. I have insomnia anyway, so here we are an hour later. DH is in another room snoring. Ho hum. Anyone tried Heardle?

A580Hojas · 26/03/2022 04:53

I've woke up at 3 with a chronic gurgling stomach. Two trips to the bathroom later and it's still squirming away, so loud! Why do these things always come on in the middle of the night??

YukoandHiro · 26/03/2022 04:58

My toddler has a bad cold with a fever (possibly covid but testing negative so far) and I've been up with her since 3.30am. She's just treated me to two absolutely awful nappies in a row. Older daughter in her own room and DH was on a night shift so is sleeping in the spare room so I'm still trying to resettle her quietly so nobody else is disturbed

Hope some of you have found sleep by now

lljkk · 26/03/2022 05:04

I just wake up & don't easily sleep again. An hour ago. Big teen DS was just going to sleep, sigh. Bored. Trying to resist urge To start playing Semantle.

TokyoSushi · 26/03/2022 05:05

We booked a holiday to Greece today and I'm excited! It's our first abroad holiday since 2019.

Also just seen the news that Taylor Hawkins has died Sad

And finally, am too hot so sat on the kitchen sofa with the dog for 10 mins then will go back up

Holothane · 26/03/2022 05:15

Hi everyone it’s toast pills and coffee time decs if by the way yes another sleepiness night I’ll get sleep after this radio is going off he’s sleeping like a babe.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/03/2022 05:25

The sad news about Taylor is keeping me awake as I’m watching videos on You Tube. I love him covering Queen tracks.

Gutted. His poor family and Dave and the other Foos.

Reading the numerous tributes coming in. He was loved and respected by so many.

Am gutted. I’ve only just finished listening to Dave Grohl’s autobiography where he talks about Taylor and calls him his brother. I’m so sad for everyone who loved him.
Holothane · 26/03/2022 09:46

Well no sleep at all last night I’m sitting up again I’ve had two codeine when they kick in I’ll catch up but sick of this.

5YearsLeft · 27/03/2022 21:17

I’m so sorry I wasn’t here everybody and didn’t open the thread last night (so I don’t think anyone posted last night?). I had one of my patented beyond-a-migraine-and-a-bit-like-the-aseptic-meningitis-headache headache. I’ve basically been rolling around with a pickaxe in the head for… I don’t even know how long. It’s Sunday now?? And I last posted Friday. I’m sorry everyone who couldn’t sleep Friday!

So sorry to hear about the COVID @Sciurus83 and @Whatelsecouldibecalled

@Wallywobbles Glad the monitor is wrong and you’re not dead, but sounds like a tough time in your house! I hope your house is all through it before it’s time for Spain.

@FlappyFish Isn’t that the roughest part? That being near burnout can cause more insomnia, right when you need rest more than anything. But sometimes being unable to sleep is the final warning bell.

@AFS1 Enh, if you did fall asleep, that’s okay. Though I understand the idea of doing something being better than laying there.

I know there are quite a few I’m still missing; just know I read them all (whoever booked the trip to Greece, hooray! Whoever is boiling in their deceased FIL’s house while sorting it out, that’s impossible to sleep through, I know! Whoever was awake with the sad news about Taylor Hawkins, yes, that really was tragic)

And @Holothane you're just going through it! I’m sorry it’s not getting easier to sleep but I completely understand. I’ve had those nights where I’m still up for toast and painkiller in the morning.

God you're really having a hard time of it @5YearsLeft ☹️

There were bits of today that were good but I'm having such a hard time of it with my child's behaviour. And by that I mean extreme. And I'm mentally put out by it all. I can't deal with anymore. She blames it on me. Saying I make her angry. When I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. She truly hates me. I mean she really hates me.

5YearsLeft · 27/03/2022 22:03

@Wallywobbles Ah, glad to see they’re getting along well! I’m sure you miss them. And so sorry to hear about all the COVID. I hope it’s not too serious.

@purpleme12 Obviously I can’t see what’s happening, but I do know it’s really common for children to “lash out” at their safe person, or the person they think will love them no matter what they do, ie teenagers screaming “I hate you!” at their mums, and things like that. I don’t at all think your daughter hates you. I would definitely believe that she’s angry (about life?) or scared about something and confused and blames you because it’s safe. But that doesn’t make it feel any better, I know. I’m sorry it feels so awful. I hope maybe tomorrow is better day for her and you. Also, if I remember correctly, she’s the prime age for puberty and hormones can be an absolute bear. It’s like peri-menopause but at age 12; absolute shite for everyone involved.

5YearsLeft · 27/03/2022 22:05

@purpleme12 Oh and yeah, dying is an absolute bitch. I mean, I didn’t think these symptoms were all supposed to sort of cluster together like this. Five more years of this crap and it’s going to be a bloody relief, ha. Honestly, if I had a headache like the one I had Friday to today every week, I wouldn’t even last five years.

It’s close enough to midnight and that means the thread is officially open. If you’re struggling with whatever keeps you awake, you’re welcome here. Share, vent, whinge, scream into the void - whatever you need to do.

We’ve survived another weekend but that means… another week is upon us. If you’re stuck awake with the Sunday Scaries while Monday creeps up tomorrow, I get it.

5YearsLeft · 29/03/2022 00:00

My fault for posting too early last night and a slow night on top of it. But here we are again for the after midnight thread. If you’re awake with worries, illness, sadness, pain, insomnia, or anything else, you’re always welcome to share it here. If you can’t sleep and the pain or worry is in your body or your mind, you’re not alone.

ImNotDancing · 29/03/2022 00:05

How are you feeling today @5YearsLeft?

Last night I managed to drop off before 10pm and slept till almost noon today! Glorious

5YearsLeft · 29/03/2022 00:16

@ImNotDancing I’m so glad to hear that!!! Hooray! That’s wonderful news. I hope it gave you a bit of a boost. I know we don’t heal from pain and insomnia in a single night, but sometimes a good night can make a world of difference for a bit. I’m healing up from the “lost weekend” headache. Still spent most of today sleeping or very quietly reading. Just taking my last meds with tea in a bit.
