To ask what you’re doing awake post-midnight? Part 3: Return of the Insomnia

Hey all - We’ve made it to the third thread. Whether you’ve posted before or you’re brand new, if you’re stuck awake, then you’re welcome here. We’ve had people facing it all on the last few threads: grief (loss of DPs, DHs, parents, children, and pets), illness of every sort (cancer, COVID, post COVID, sciatica, antidepressant withdrawals, stomach bugs of every sort, cold/flu, autoimmune problems, and even more diagnoses), ill children and partners (vomiting, crying, unable to sleep… and that’s just the adult family members! Ok I’m kidding, that was mostly the kids), women in labor, women with surgery fears, fears of all other sizes, anxiety, work anxiety, and of course insomnia caused by myriad things (LOTS of peri and postmenopausal insomnia).

Whatever is keeping you awake, you’re always welcome to share it here.

If you’re following in from our last thread, it’s:

Welp, I’m here. Anyone else? Had a bunch of folderol at work, already feeling like death warmed over, and had to do my injection today which just adds to the joys. Har har. Hope everyone else is asleep. I’m reading some absolute trash on the Kindle, but it’s very light hearted and cozy.

Hi @5YearsLeft I'm here! I've managed to get Covid. I've been so smug about the fact that I'd managed to avoid it and then wham! It got me!! Luckily its not too bad, just like a stinker of a cold so I know I have nothing to moan about really. A bit of trash on the kindle is good. I find a bit of Georgette Heyer is good. I also like fiddling about on BBC Sounds and finding radio programmes to listen to. Right now I'm listening to an Agatha Christie on R4Xtra with June Whitfield as Miss Marple. I hated having to self inject when I was having chemo. It didn't even hurt, I just hated it! Hopefully you will sleep soon.

5YearsLeft · 11/08/2022 02:44

@Confusedmeanderings Oh, I love Georgette Heyer! I haven’t actually tried listening to radio in so long; maybe I’ll give it a go. The book I’m reading is proper trash; I think it’s ebook only, about a magic inn and the innkeeper who is trying to make a success of it in a backwater on Earth to serve travelers from a bunch of alien planets, including OBVIOUSLY vampires and werewolves, but they’’re obviously SPACE vampires and werewolves. I just… it’s beyond ridiculous.

I’m so sorry you’ve got COVID! You’re the second person I’ve heard in the past week with it, so it feels like it’s going “up” again. Do you have the variant that gives you the horrific sore throat? I do hope you can get some rest and feel better soon, even though I know COVID insomnia is a bit infamous.

I completely understand about the injection! Im fortunate I can do my own at home and the little pump pumps it into me for 40 minutes and it leaves these four lumps from the fluid under my skin that itch and burn for the next 24hr. Not quite the disco party life , har har.

That sounds quite some book! Which reminds me I meant to download The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, I must do that. It came to mind because I read an interesting article about Alan Garner earlier today. Evidently as a young man he was quite friendly with Alan Turing, except he had no idea who he was. Anyway, that made me think that I must reread The Weirdstone.

IdiotCreatures · 21/08/2022 06:08

I always preferred The Moon of Gomrath to the weird stone but loved both books when I was younger. Spent years as a child looking for a stone with its own internal fire in antique places and junk shops that my dad would take me to.
Never found one though, ah the folly of youth!!

I was in here for the first thread and unfortunately here again. Anxiety has reared it’s head and I’m having difficulty managing it. Came on suddenly like it seems to now with a waking at 4 yesterday and physically wobbly. Got through the day and took a zopiclone to try and manage but woke at 2 and now physically shaking again

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 02:41

Hi Flashinggeeen I hope you’re ok. Have you got something you could do or something you could watch? X

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 02:49

Thanks for response, don’t think I can at the moment. Sat in the spare room Googling how to manage physically symptoms of anxiety.

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 02:50

I started an easy read book last night so should try that but the trembling is overwhelming.

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 02:56

I’m so sorry. I don’t know if I would class it as having anxiety but I get very worked up about being sick and my daughter has said she has tummy ache. I’m currently downstairs with her shaking and sweating because I’m panicking so much. I try and control my breathing and distract myself (know it isn’t that easy!)

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 03:06

Sound like the way my body responds to anxiety. I can’t even pinpoint a reason for mine although DS1 has GCSE results this week and there’s a matter at work bothering me.
I hope the tummy ache passes soon

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 03:16

Thank you. Yes I’m sure there’s always a worry that’s a trigger. For me I tell myself sternly I’m watching something and watch it and try and breathe x

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 03:55

Just clock watching waiting for getting up time. Although I’m not going to be able to go to work. How’s the tummy ache?

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 03:59

Yes it’s that awful time of night, waiting for morning. Not too long to go.
How are you feeling?
Shes ok thanks, says she feels sick which is my worst nightmare! She was drifting off but says it hurts again. My problem is I imagine I’ve got a bug as well. I also feel like I want to run away from it but trying to keep calm x

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 04:04

I’m feeling agitated and exhausted. Thoughts are funny things aren’t they? Running away with us and lying to us.

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 04:09

Yes they are terrible. I try and tell myself that I’ve felt like this before and I’ll be fine as I always am. Hope you’re ok 😊

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 04:12

Yes that’s a good one to remember. I’m just catastrophising over possibly not being able to work tomorrow and if this will ruin our long awaited holiday on Saturday. Just normal runaway brain.

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 04:16

I do that! Can you be a sensible friend/relative to yourself? Surely you’ll still be able to go on holiday?
I completely understand as I go to the worst scenario. I’ve spent so many nights in my adult life sitting up all night panicking, clammy, feeling sick and shaking. It’s so frustrating!

AFS1 · 22/08/2022 04:18

I’ve just booked a city break for my daughter and I in the October half-term!
Insomnia can be expensive!

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 04:21

I love it when I’ve ordered something and forget until it arrives. Have a fab holiday!

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 04:22

Yes I’ll go but worried about being anxious there and how I’m so looking forward to it with the chance it’ll be ruined by anxiety.

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 04:28

Try not to think about it if you can. Lovely you’re going on holiday.
AFS1 great about your holiday! Where you off to?

My daughter has been sick and I’ve survived and I’m fairly calm. Looking forward to it getting light

Flashinggreen · 22/08/2022 04:34

Hope now she’s actually been sick your panic subsides

1AngelicFruitCake · 22/08/2022 04:38

Thank you. I hope you’re ok, it’s been nice having someone to talk to. I tried to private message you but it wouldn’t let me/I’m doing it wrong! 😄 x

AFS1 · 22/08/2022 04:41

We’re off to Rome!! So excited!
