Aibu to think this isn’t okay - cleaner nespresso

624 replies

Candyhats · 21/03/2022 04:56

We have a cleaner who comes in on a daily basis and obviously we have tea and instant coffee, which we keep in our home and provide for her to drink. However I noticed we are going through nespresso capsules quickly and then I realized she has nespresso(s) daily when she works. My husband does drink coffee and I’m the only one that drinks it and as a treat, even it home.

Aibu to address this with cleaner?

I tried to hide a sleeve with some capsules in, she found it and had a couple while emptying the rest into the nespresso jar.

@Belladonna12 *@MurmuratingStarling it IS snobby, because you'll only drink the expensive version. If you're buying it for yourself fair enough, but this is being provided by someone else.

Rubbish. Not drinking instant coffee because you hate the taste is not snobby. I'm sure there are things that you don't eat because you don't particularly like them. Does that mean you are snobby? It would only be snobby if I was drinking it because it is the expensive version rather than because the taste is much better.

Belladonna12 · 21/03/2022 13:17

@TheBeautifulMoors

I don’t know how much the pods cost but if they cost say £2 each and she’s having two a day while you have them as a treat, of course you’ll be fine to address it with her! She’s costing you an extra £20 per week, when you’re not spending that on yourself. I think you can be polite and honest. Let her know you can’t afford it. Those saying you’re tight, mean, etc are being ridiculous. Even if it’s a £1 per pod, that’s £10 extra a week. It’s expensive.
It's about 30p a pod. Not a huge amount for someone who can afford a daily cleaner.
Loyaultemelie · 21/03/2022 13:17

We always tell our cleaner to help herself to coffee (we only have tassimo so we are probably not worth worrying about anyway by MN standards). If I'm making one I make for her or if she fancies one she'll make one for me, I even buy the pods she likes and nobody else drinks, she only comes once every 10 days to a fortnight though. Mind you I also make her extra food or buns etc if we are making anything when she's here and she often brings the DC a chocolate bar and made me soup at her house and brought it when I was really ill.

MurmuratingStarling · 21/03/2022 13:19

@AnneKisee

Another one with high class taste buds.
It's perfectly fine for me thanks, and maybe even (gasp!) the OP!

The snobs who consider instant coffee beneath them have jumped to the conclusion that there's two tier coffee.

it IS snobby, because you'll only drink the expensive version.

Seriously, WTF is your problem? Confused Bully for you that you just LOVE instant coffee, not everyone does. I think it tastes like shit and would rather have a drink of water. I have the right to say this. It's my personal preference. (Like many others on here.)

You are taking this so personally, and getting so irate and bizarrely over-invested in the fact that SOME people don't like instant coffee. Why do YOU care if some people think it tastes like shit? It's incredibly bizarre.

I, and some others on here, simply dislike instant coffee, why are you (and several others here) getting so offended by it?

Your inverted snobbery and sarcastic remarks aimed at people who simply have a personal preference for something, is really not a good look. Calling people snobs for not liking instant coffee is making you look petty, and narrow-minded. The very things you are accusing other people of. Have a word with yourself!

People are acting like the cleaner's being treated like dirt because she'd been offered instant coffee.
Again for the hundredth time it's fine if YOU don't like it. But that does not mean you should be offered more expensive coffee instead. Just don't drink any.

This isn't quite relevant to this situation (as the OP didn't tell the cleaner not to use the Nespresso). But there is nothing wrong with offering it. That's all.

AnneKisee · 21/03/2022 13:20

@MurmuratingStarling see above

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/03/2022 13:22

I get you need a cleaner daily due to dh disabilty.

But do you really begrudge her a coffee or two

A pack of 8 discs is £4/5 so 50p a coffee ish

But if a treat for you stop buying them if none there when you want

Do you have a spare £20 a month to buy special coffee for someone you're already paying a living wage too?
starfishmummy · 21/03/2022 13:25

@AnneKisee

I hope the rest of you who have laid into the OP are happy having laid into a carer (which OP presumably is for her disabled husband). The ableism on this thread is shocking.

@cumonilean your situation is very different. Please explain why the cleaner deserves BETTER than OP?

I'd agree with you if OP was a millionaire and drank fancy coffee everyday. But she herself only has it as a treat. Can you not see how she'd be unhappy that the cleaner's polishing them off?

It's OK. I'm an unpaid carer too, so that would make us even.

And I'm not totally sure how someone being disabled means they need a cleaner in every day.

stuntbubbles · 21/03/2022 13:27

I think it’s really odd to hide the pods from someone without telling them you don’t want them drunk, then get annoyed that she found and drank them. How’s she supposed to know? She even filled up your jar with the pods! That’s great – is she otherwise thoughtful and thinks about the details and actually cleans under the furniture instead of around it? Do everything in your power to keep her, including a couple of coffees a day.

YellowLemonYellow · 21/03/2022 13:27

Is that all? When I have workmen in the house, I fly them to Trieste to drink espressos on the Piazza Unità d'Italia, overlooking the Adriatic. No one gets a scrap of work done, of course, but at least I’m not rude.

Grin So funny.

MurmuratingStarling · 21/03/2022 13:35

You are clearly taking all of this very personally @AnneKisee for reasons that only YOU know. Clearly a few of your raw nerves have been hit.

For some reason, you are taking things VERY personally on this thread, and are massively over-invested. I do have a suspicion as to why it is, but I won't upset you further by saying.

So I'll leave you to it. I am off to make myself a POSH coffee, as I am clearly a snob. Wink

Hamster1111 · 21/03/2022 13:41

Gosh, can't have the staff having the nice coffee can we. She might get ideas above her station.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/03/2022 13:51

Yes if I had a cleaner I wouldn’t begrudge her an extra 50p a day in coffee

How long is your cleaner there @Candyhats each day

What chores does she do

Belladonna12 · 21/03/2022 13:51

People are acting like the cleaner's being treated like dirt because she'd been offered instant coffee.

I think that she just offered tea and coffee and then was outraged that the cleaner had an espresso rather than instant.

Again for the hundredth time it's fine if YOU don't like it. But that does not mean you should be offered more expensive coffee instead. Just don't drink any.

If OP only wants to offer instant coffee she should keep Nespresso out of the way.

@Candyhats

Thanks to the posters who answered my post without judging and being presumptuous as to my financial status or character.
It would have been helpful if you had said in the first place your reason for having a daily cleaner

I'm still not clear on why why the fact her the DH has a disability means that a daily cleaner is required. OP is not disabled herself, so you would think could do some cleaning.

StarlightLady · 21/03/2022 14:19

Last week we had a thread about a cleaner finding anal beads, this week, we have this. I think we have all been fooled again!

NewPapaGuinea · 21/03/2022 14:22

I want to know who buys Nescafe original? That stuff is like mud.

catsandquails · 21/03/2022 14:28

We have a similar machine and the drinks are a treat for us- usually we drink instant. So I can see where you are coming from. Even so, I personally wouldn't mind if someone helped themselves. Maybe you could hide the pods if you don't want her using them? Perhaps she doesn't see it as a treat but just a normal every day drink, so wouldn't have considered that you might not be happy with her using them?

ThinWomansBrain · 21/03/2022 14:34

I've just worked it out and a coffee made with better quality instant is 3.5p a cup.
better quality? surely this requires a trip to Lidl?
I'm on a boring train journey (really not overinvested in this Grin)
lidl instant £1.99 200g
nescafe in sainsburys £4.50 200g

jytdtysrht · 21/03/2022 14:36

It isn’t possible to make a judgement without having the full information.

It is not unreasonable to deduce that someone who has a cleaner every day is rich and can afford loads of nespresso things. In fact, it is the most logical conclusion to draw.

The subsequent information makes the question completely and utterly different. I think this thread should be taken down as it was misleading.

jytdtysrht · 21/03/2022 14:37

And calling posters ableist is bizarre given that nobody knew the Op’s dh was disabled.

jytdtysrht · 21/03/2022 14:38

I think the question should have been:

How can I stop our daily carer from taking our treats which we struggle to afford.
