Elderly parents on a sofa bed, is it ok?

Stressing out a bit as to where to put my parents.
We live abroad and they visit us two-three times per year. They were always in the spare room with a nice, double bed. That’s now going to be our toddler DD’s room. We sold the bed and are currently painting it to get ready.
We only gave her bedroom and ours.
I thought of getting a small sofa bed to put in our bedroom as a sofa and into DD’s room as a sofa bed for them when they come to stay (Dd would sleep with us in our room)
Does this sound ok? They’re late 60’s/early 70’s. Can’t think of any other option.
Have offered them our bedroom before, large room with en-suite and terrace, but mum doesn’t want to because our dog sleeps on our bed 🤷🏻‍♀️She obviously wouldn’t whilst they were here and obviously sheets washed etc
She was disappointed when I said we were selling the large double bed as I have a small child’s single for our Dd and said can she not sleep in the double bed, it was huge and wanted her to have her own bed!
Where would you comfortably put them?

I don't understand why you sold the bed?

Your daughter could have slept in it and a couple of times a year when your parents stay your daughter could've slept on a put you up or inflatable bed in your room or the living room.

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat · 17/03/2022 22:46

If they are in good health I see no problem. You could get a good sofa bed for the living room, one with proper springs.

Or you and DH could sleep on the sofa bed.

BTW I am about to turn 70, I really really hope my DC don't see me as elderly! I was talking to someone about my age the other day, we decided we were very late middle age Grin

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 17/03/2022 22:46

Ffs I’m 63, am I nearly elderly? How did that happen? My DD was born when mum was 73. - she came 200 miles on 3 buses to help with her. Was I exploiting an elderly vulnerable person?

A decent sofa bed would be fine for me and DH, but to be honest we’d probably just fork out for a hotel or airbnb for the space and peace.

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:46

@Rainbowshit That’s been my idea from the start, but mum won’t due to the dog having slept there sometimes

I’d move them to an air bnb at this point.

It’s not going to comfortable for anyone.

lisaandalan · 17/03/2022 22:47

Maybe make one of your bathrooms into another bedroom eventually. X

Tonsiltrouble · 17/03/2022 22:48

My kids sleep in doubles, makes it easier when they are poorly and is more versatile. My youngest went straight from cot to king size as that’s all we had at the time.

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:49

@Blossomtoes @thinkfast It was pretty huge and I wanted her to have a small, child’s bed. She’s always been in with us. I missed out on having a lovely nursery for her due to this, but now it’s time she has her own proper child’s room.
A double in there doesn’t leave much space for bits we want to do in her room

It's time for them to book into local B&B now.

grapewines · 17/03/2022 22:50
@Sorbitol Oh I’ve never seen those 🤔 so a normal single for Dd, which extends to a double? Are they big single beds?
I think the IKEA ones are 80 or 90x200 and then extend out to a double bed. My friend has one for each of her children.

Sofasogood1 · 17/03/2022 22:50

Two weeks? A hotel or Airbnb is the only acceptable option for everyone. We also only have two bedrooms, one with a GREAT sofa bed but no way would either me and DP or either of our parents sleep on it for two whole weeks.

Don't give it anymore thought and book somewhere else. If it's too expensive to do for two weeks make the visit shorter.

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:50

@TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat God no, sorry, I definitely don’t see them as elderly and neither do they 🙈I wasn’t sure what age it’s classed as 🤷🏻‍♀️It’s so different nowadays
@Candleabra I’ve offered our room, mum isn’t keen due to our dog, which I don’t get at all
If you've hoovered the mattress I don't see the problem (or do you have mattress covers anyway?)

But I do think it's going to be harder to host for that length of time. Is there an Airbnb nearby?

Paleodiet · 17/03/2022 22:51

OP, I am their age and would sleep happily on the sofa bed. Elderly? Oh no…

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:52

@lisaandalan Yes that’s definitely the plan when finances allow, many neighbours have done the same

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:53

@Luredbyapomegranate I can’t really just move them 😬they’ve always stayed with us and never mentioned hotels or b & b’s

Your right getting rid of getting big bed for your dd...its her space for most of the year......yes to the trundle type bed ...are you /she going to be ok sleeping in together for 2 weeks...?

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:54

@WallaceinAnderland They’ve never offered

I would probably sleep anywhere that I was put,, I don't like people having to make special arrangements for me. I am 80 next week, I once slept on a crap mattress on someones floor years ago, and the persons dog came in later, and slept on the end bit of the mattress. The saving grace was, the friend had left a little radio on the floor, so I was able to sing along to some tunes whilst in bed.!

titchy · 17/03/2022 22:56

They're not elderly! But agree a single with a trundle underneath would do the job (and be useful when your dd has friends sleeping over).

This sort of thing: bed

Shinyandnew1 · 17/03/2022 22:56

I would probably have kept the double bed-it’s so useful to have one for guests. That ship has sailed though, so I’d get a single bed that comes with a pull up bed underneath which together make up a double. Parents can have that and DD can sleep in your room on an air bed for the week or two that they come.

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:56

@Sofasogood1 They’ve already booked the flights and we can’t afford to pay for a hotel for two weeks

OP posts:
tkwal · 17/03/2022 22:56

We had a single bed with a pull out bed built in below it that had legs and raised up to the same level. Main bed was 3ft wide and guest bed was 2ft 6. Sounds like that would be a workable solution for you ?

Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:57

@Sofasogood1 So you’d say a sofa bed isn’t ok comfort wise for two weeks?

OP posts:
Letsgobacktothenineties · 17/03/2022 22:59

@Nanny0gg It’s cleaned regularly and sheets etc, she’s funny about dogs, the dogs barely on there these days anyway
