Please read the formal review.

Essentially the teaching staff called the police because a black 15 year old girl smelt of cannabis. She was taken to a room and strip searched. She was on her period. Her mother wasn't notified. She was not given the opportunity for an appropriate adult to be present.

This is absolutely sickening. Poor kid and that is all she is, even now. All this incident will do is cause more hatred for the police starting with this girl and her family, moving on to friends and classmates and on and on.

It is a proven fact that cops see black kids as bigger and older and more threatening regardless of their age which must be really scary for a young teen just because of the colour of their skin.

If they want to interview a minor I am pretty sure that a parent or guardian needs to be called so surely the same applies here.

RichPetunia · 15/03/2022 19:42

Seems extreme. Where’s the evidence this happened?

WonderfulYou · 15/03/2022 19:42

I work in a school and have had students smell of cannabis on many occasions.
Some have had their bags searched but it’s often their parents who smoke which is why they’re clothes smell of it.

As someone in my 30s this would absolutely scar me for life so I dread to think how a 15 year old body conscious teen would feel.

I hope people lose their jobs and even get jail time.
None of them should be allowed around children ever again.

Whatwouldscullydo · 15/03/2022 19:42

Everyone involved needs sacking. This is child abuse. Pretty sure id consider it sexual assault tbh. Horrific way to treat a child. The adults supposed to protect her are responsible for abusing her Angry all for sone non-existent cannabis. Hmm

Poor thing Sad

Testingprof · 15/03/2022 19:43

Don’t let facts get in the way of denying racism.

@MintyFreshBreath will be back to say there are so few white kids in London that’s why they are under represented in the stats quoted. I genuinely have had people say that to me, it’s tiring.

MPS isn't denying it. There's an official review linked upthread but I'll repeat it.

So you think there has been a review of something that never happened.

I wonder why the police officers didn't just say "it never happened" when interviewed.

For the rest of you, this is far worse than you might think from the overview.

This was in June 2020, and she was pulled out of an exam for this (presumably GCSE). Months of interrupted education, and then that. Imagine going back into an exam room after this, and managing to concentrate on anything.

•She was made to bend over spread her legs, use her hands to spread her buttocks cheek whilst coughing.”
• “She was not permitted to use the toilet despite asking.”
• “She is now self-harming and requires therapy. She is traumatised and is now a shell of the bubbly child she was before this incident.”
• “From the time she was pulled out of her exam to the time she returned home, she was isolated, not given food or offered water, where is the care.”

HesterShaw1 · 15/03/2022 19:50

On what planet could those teachers and police officers thought "Yes this is appropriate, proportional and acceptable"?

It beggars belief.

That poor poor child Angry

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/03/2022 19:50

@Guineapigssweak

Horrific behaviour but not racist just cause she is black. Could easily have been a white girl.
Same year, same force.

Curioushorse · 15/03/2022 19:51

I can't fathom the stages involved in this.

I've dealt with several incidents where a student has been caught with drugs and wouldn't hand them over. This....just isn't procedural. This isn't what happens! I don't get it. This is obviously horrendous but I feel like it's even worse than it sounds because this isn't right. A couple of the kids we caught were dealing, and we knew had rather a lot, so police were involved. This is so far from what happened it's just batshit.

And yes it was the Met I dealt with. It's also not particularly relevant, but in the cases I dealt with none of the kids were white- though they were all male.

Except it hasn't been.
PourSomeLove · 15/03/2022 19:51

This is disgusting. That poor girl. Reading the impact it has had on her is just heartbreaking. Anyone involved in this incident should be sacked. Everything about this incident is wrong.

As for anyone here minimising and saying ‘you can’t be sure it’s racist’....seriously? Probably the same posters that hang around the black mumsnetter board telling the posters there how they should and shouldn’t feel and minimising their experiences.

OvaHere · 15/03/2022 19:52

I read about this earlier on Twitter. Horrendous, although given other recent examples this sort of behaviour by police is not surprising at all. Poor girl. Sad

canary1 · 15/03/2022 19:53

So sickened and angry at this. Poor girl. They need to be hauled through the courts.

WonderfulYou · 15/03/2022 19:54

If race is a factor for someone acting a certain way - then yes that’s racist.

PPs need to read the link which says how race played a part.
Why are they trying to twist it or deny it when it’s there in black and white - and these are the sorts of people who claim racism isn’t an issue in this country yet their dismissal of thinking it’s racist is racist in itself.

BloodyN0rah · 15/03/2022 19:54

It gets worse the more I hear. Apologists above, you are part of the problem!

Andouillette · 15/03/2022 19:54

Appalling. How can anybody attempt to minimise this, get a moral compass please, those of you doing just that.
I hope her mother (on her behalf) sues the arses off the Met, the school, the LEA etc.
