Please read the formal review.

Essentially the teaching staff called the police because a black 15 year old girl smelt of cannabis. She was taken to a room and strip searched. She was on her period. Her mother wasn't notified. She was not given the opportunity for an appropriate adult to be present.

Its disgraceful. I work in a prison, and I would not have grounds for requesting a full strip search just because a prisoner "smelt of cannabis". That poor kid, how humiliating for her.

Is this the schools normal reaction to a situation like this,I wonder?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 15/03/2022 19:01

The what now?

As a child, I used to reek of tobacco smoke. I can, hand on my heart, declare that I've never smoked a cigarette in my life.

I am absolutely horrified at how badly let down she was by so many adults. I can't believe NO ONE stepped in to reign everything back several stages.

Likewise. What was going through the mind of adults who permitted this. This needs an investigation of everyone involved.

MurmuratingStarling · 15/03/2022 19:01

Disgusting. My respect for the police is in the sewers. Can't stand them,. (Most of them!) A few police are fine, decent people, but IMO the police force contains more bigoted racist thugs than any other profession. It's like racist bullies join the force for the power it gives them.

As I say, not ALL of them are like this, but some are. And 'The Met' seems to have the worst of the lot!

That poor POOR girl! Sad

BobblyBlueJumper · 15/03/2022 19:02

Oh my goodness. That poor child.

The school has really let that girl down. Totally failed in their safeguarding duty. What on earth was the principal thinking?

The Met are just totally beyond the pale, nothing they do surprises me any more.

FrancescaContini · 15/03/2022 19:02

I’m horrified. They asked her to remove her sanitary towel - WTAF?

sandalsinthebin · 15/03/2022 19:02

Disgusting and obviously motivated by racism. Heads should roll for this (they probably won't though).

Ncwinc · 15/03/2022 19:02

The utter disgrace of the school calling in the police because the child smelt of cannabis. How fucking dare they.

This is what happens when the police and schools are too close to each other.

www.theguardian.com/education/2021/mar/25/uk-police-forces-deploy-683-officers-in-schools

Police are institutionally racist and having them in schools just leads to the criminalisation of children.

this poor poor child. She must be traumatised. I hope someone out there is defending her and that there are consequences for this.

HeadPain · 15/03/2022 19:05

Angry Can she/her family bring a lawsuit?? I hope!

Calennig · 15/03/2022 19:06

That's absolutely disgusting behavior by the school and by the Met.

15 year - is a child and you expect them to be treated with some respect at school.

babywalker56 · 15/03/2022 19:07

I'm a black woman and didn't think I'd be surprised with whatever the post was going to be about after reading th thread title but wow, just wow.

I honestly do not understand how they've done this and to a child too?? How disgusting.

you see it in the press all the time with the language used, at 15 a white child will be called exactly that but asian or black kids are young adults and not treated with the same empathy.

I agree with this comment 1000%. I can almost guarantee the police officers didn't view her as a child but as a young adult. Why did the school even need to call the police just because they thought they smelled weed? No actual evidence of her having weed on her? What was the need to strip search her without notifying an adult and then get her to remove her sanitary towel?? How humiliating and inhumane.

This poor girl will never trust the police again but I hope she's given some sort of therapy to try and move past this. How disgusting

nocoolnamesleft · 15/03/2022 19:07

Appalling. That poor child.

Why am I not surprised this involved the ‘Safer Schools’ scheme. If they were concerned that she had drugs on her person they could have sent her home. Risk removed. Instead they had a child strip searched.

This is the actual review if anyone wants to read more.

Skimming this and my jaw won't shift from the floor.

Quotation:

In 2020, Child Q, a Black female child of secondary school age, was strip searched by female police officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). The search, which involved the exposure of Child Q’s intimate body parts, took place on school premises, without an Appropriate Adult present and with the knowledge that Child Q was menstruating.
1.2 Teachers told the review that on the day of the search they believed Child Q was smelling strongly of cannabis and suspected that she might be carrying drugs. On questioning Child Q, she denied using or having any drugs in her possession. A search of her bag, blazer, scarf, and shoes revealed nothing of significance.
1.3 Remaining concerned, teachers sought advice from the Safer Schools Police Officer. Due to the restrictions arising from Covid-19, this officer was not on site. He recommended that the school call 101 and ask for a female officer to attend.
1.4 A male and female officer subsequently arrived at the school, followed by another two officers (one of whom was also female). After discussions between the police and teachers, Child Q was escorted to the medical room. She was subsequently strip searched.
1.5 No Appropriate Adult was in attendance, teachers remained outside the room and Child Q’s mother was not contacted in advance. No drugs were found during either the strip search or a search of the room in which Child Q had been waiting beforehand.
1.6 Child Q was later allowed to return home where she disclosed the events to her mother. Child Q described how she had been strip searched whilst menstruating. Due to the level of her distress, Child Q’s mother took her to the family GP who made a referral for psychological support. This led to contact with Hackney Children and Families Services (Hackney CFS)

*couldn’t be sure

Toomanyradishes · 15/03/2022 19:08

What a suprise the met police conducting unneccessary and illegal strip searches again.

There is so much blatant rasicm and sexism in that force, and the polide in general, i dont know how they can fix it and even begin to rebuild the publics trust

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 15/03/2022 19:09

I can't believe what I have just read. It's utterly disgusting and the officers should be prosecuted.

That poor, poor girl. I can't even imagine.

riceuten · 15/03/2022 19:11

@BlanketsBanned

have the POs been sacked yet
Given what has happened in the Met recently, there's a VERY slim chance of that
WhiteXmas21 · 15/03/2022 19:11

This should not be happening in a civilised country. That poor child. I am utterly disgusted and heartbroken for her.

I'm really upset just reading this. I can't even imagine how the poor girl (and her family) must feel. It feels like state sponsored indecent assault.

WulyJmpr · 15/03/2022 19:15

Shocking and sickening. Is an innapropriate strip search on a child actually equivalent to an assault and/or child abuse? Have these police officers and teachers who were complicit in this been sacked?

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 15/03/2022 19:15

I'm honestly more shocked by the school's behaviour in all this than the Met's. I think the school should be named and shamed. Their behaviour was inherently racist, too. Terrible, terrible "safeguarding".
