Please read the formal review.

Essentially the teaching staff called the police because a black 15 year old girl smelt of cannabis. She was taken to a room and strip searched. She was on her period. Her mother wasn't notified. She was not given the opportunity for an appropriate adult to be present.

It's disgusting, but at this point, if you're shocked then you're not paying attention.
Yep. How many times will shit like this happen before people realise the poison is everywhere.
After the disgusting actions against Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry nothing should shock you.
George Floyd.
George Nkencho - Gardai shot killed him when his younger siblings hide behind the door.
Gardai shooting can be counted on your hands over the years.

Does anybody know if and what action is being taken against the police and school involved?

octopud · 18/03/2022 07:30

Just read a news report of a Merseyside police officer suffering from PND being put on the police barred register after being convicted of shoplifting in a supermarket (she resigned before she was dismissed). That's the correct action of course. When will the Met step up?

DysonSphere · 18/03/2022 09:33

@IdontWanna

Thanks. Appreciate it. I guess I needed to wake up but it's depressing.

purpleboy · 18/03/2022 10:45

Not sure if I'm allowed to share this but there is a petition, if you could all sign

There is also a protest March on Sunday 20th we need to show this girl our support, and show the police we will not take this lying down.

It doesn't matter how strong they are when people in authority want to ignore them.

I guess not. You're completely right. You know what? I am tired. I am soooo tired. It's caught up with me all at once. A huge slump.
The huge obvious disparity in how brown people fleeing war are treated and those who are not....the disparity in majority black countries getting covid vaccines, the little everyday lowering of expectations, having to tell my kids they have to be better or they'll be judged twice, the difference in reporting of crimes...now this. All of a sudden it's become too much.

My mental health is starting to suffer and I'm usually quite robust and pragmatic about the inequalities I, my children, and my community suffer in the world. I'll usually go out of my way to see things in as unbiased a light as possible. I reject simple rhetoric. But no. It's too much for me. I need to return to Jesus or something for my sanity, because I'm not sure I can take anymore and remain a nice person who believes in the inherent good in all people.[/quote]

@WrongWayApricot

I'm really struggling with how this series of events even started. She was in an exam, presumably silent room full of people. Teachers/supervisors walking up and down. They get to her and stop to sniff or something? Then go and tell another. They discuss this. Then, what, approach her and make her walk out with all heads turning. My heart would be pounding, thinking I was being accused of cheating or there was a family emergency. Then horror unfolds. I don't expect much kindness or empathy from the police anymore, especially after the selfies incident. The teachers though, and school nurse. I don't know how people can sleep at night really. I hope they lose their jobs, teaching and nursing is clearly not for them.
This is horrific. I was shaking for the poor girl when I read what she went through. Then I read she was taking an exam Sad. Even worse.

Sadiq Khan is asking the police involved to be investigated.
But what about the school and the teachers. How is this not a targetted rounding on a child for the teachers to call the police to an exam hall? Why would teachers try to sabotage her grades and mental wellbeing?

That's been answered elsewhere on the thread.

Otherwise you can Google. The Guardian actually have a section on their website that deals with issues in education including racism in UK schools.

I've known of awful teachers who just take set against particular children. Bias, prejudice, racism, irrational.

So many parents here are scared to challenge schools so bad teachers get away with shocking behaviour.

It'll have been a particular teacher hellbent on sabotaging her and roping the other stupid teachers no doubt into behaving like pack-mentality savages based on their own unjust bias

MisshapesMistakesMisfits · 18/03/2022 17:07

@BlanketsBanned

All she got was an apology. The policewomen, teachers who stayed outside and the school nurse are a disgrace.
The school nurse is not mentioned at all in the review or the article. NHS school nurses are not based in school, there just isn’t enough of them. Absolutely agree that the other adults involved in this case have failed this child.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/03/2022 17:48

If you walk past a girl in an exam hall who smells of weed, your next action should be to note it down to take up with pastoral care after the exam. There you can find out if she is using it or being exposed to secondhand smoking.

The person who called the police after a bag check is not fit to be in any position of responsibility.

Link to the petition for justice for those who haven't signed yet. I can't begin to imagine the fear of black parents sending their children to school now. This poor girl has been utterly failed by the people who are supposed to protect her and are supposed to teach her so she achieves her full potential. Instead she's learned to fear the authorities. She's learned that anyone can disregard her right to dignity and respect. Her parents have learned that unless they stand next to her through every step of her life, she's not safe from harm. It's a sickening situation. If one of the royal great granddaughters were a teenager in school and smelled of weed this wouldn't have happened to them. That should be the starting point for what is and isn't appropriate. It's not ok just because it's a black girl from Hackney and her parents aren't in a position of authority.

I've had some brilliant teachers but also some nasty vindictive teachers. I remember one who bullied the top pupil in our year 6 class. She was forever trying to humiliate her and put her "in her place". She would occasionally do the same to other top pupils but had a special level of hatred for this girl. She'd ask questions to catch her out and read out the few answers she got wrong in tests and to mock her in front of the class. She was a lovely girl but the teacher hated that she was so intelligent (way way above average level). Fortunately it had little impact on her future and she went on to become a surgeon after graduating from Cambridge. Even so, 20 years later it still grates on me that the teacher won an award for her support of pupils with dyslexia the very same year she was bullying that girl.

News at 6 reports Child Q is suing the Met.

Bloody good for her.

Nnique · 18/03/2022 18:30

Is she suing the relevant individuals at the school too? Because I would.

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 18/03/2022 18:40

Yes, it says she is taking civil action against the school as well.

Nnique · 18/03/2022 18:53

Great.

Too little, too late though, isn’t it. Wishing her and her family strength Flowers and may justice be served.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/03/2022 18:59

I fear so much for black girls in the schooling system. When I was in school I didn't understand what a micro or macro aggressions were so now as an adult when I look back I am frankly astonished at some of the behaviour I had to learn to tolerate as a girl. What I will say is that black girls don't get to just 'be'. They're forced from an early age to always been on the defensive.

RedWingBoots · 18/03/2022 19:04

@FloBot7 the woman will remember it.

Everyone who has been bullied by a teacher does.

Every black child who has been dragged out of their classroom by the police does.

Every black and asian teacher who has seen it and left a school or left teaching does.

StillWeRise · 18/03/2022 19:09

if there is a fundraiser for her case can anyone say where to find it?

There isn't yet.
berlinbabylon · 18/03/2022 20:13

The teachers seem to have been given a bit of a free pass by the review. I don't think they acted appropriately in any way.

It seems that a month before this incident the girl had appeared to be drunk in school, they contacted the mother who explained she'd not slept well. They clearly didn't believe the mother as the response was something along the lines of "it can't happen again and if she does drugs she'll be in trouble". So she can't have another bad night's sleep? I think the review should have come down harder on the school staff - a lot harder.

Absolutely shocking.
