Just don't do what I did at the beauticians. Took my knickers off for a wax I think I must have been in smear mode. I'd been there many many times and am fully aware that you move them to the side . I realised what I had done straight away and hurriedly covered myself whilst apologising. She did say that some women did prefer to do that. I don't know if it's true but I was mortified.

A beautician once told me to take my knickers off and when I queried she said women keeping their knickers on was like going to a hairdressers and keeping a hat on . Now I just home wax

Yes I keep mine on. The tiled floors are freezing!

I keep them on. Knee highs. Novelty ones. Feel like I’m wearing clothes🤣 and try not to get anxious.

I'm fine with smears but the thought of letting wax, or a beautician near my nether regions...

I wouldn't take my socks off, no. They're looking at your fanny, not your feet.

My view is that when we have a smear we're lying half-dressed, legs akimbo, on a weird little narrow padded bench thing, partially draped with paper towels, while a stranger pokes things up the business end. Socks are not going to make this seem any ridiculous than it already does.

I havent had a smear done in the UK and have always wondered how they are done as ours are done at a gynae dr who has a gynae chair where you put your feet up.

Anyway when I went for the first time I just asked what should come off and what should stay on. Socks were said to be kept on.

The thought has never even crossed my mind, you do realise there is no reason whatsoever why the nurse needs to see your toes while doing a smear.

@katepilar Ah, I see - here in the UK you usually just lie on an ordinary medical bench/couch with your knees up and your legs apart, rather than the chairs with the stirrup things.

I'm glad all nations seem to be on the same page socks-wise

Had this conversation with the gynaecologist just last week. It's completely illogical, but I feel more naked with socks on than without, and I cannot fathom why. Unless its connected somehow in my mind with bare legs / feet at a swimming pool being fine? (Disclaimer: I do always wear a costume at the pool...)

I've always kept them on and I hide my underwear under my clothes. I have never been offered a paper towel to protect modesty so I try to wear a long top/shirt so I can use it a bit to hide myself.

Of course leave them on, the last thing you're trying to look is sexy or ready for sex

I usually leave my socks on during sex too to be honest.

It's a long time since I've had a smear but the ones i have gone to I've always kept on one shoe and both socks, along with one leg still in my jeans and only one leg out of my knickers, it makes the nurse laugh every time.

I admit it would never cross my mind to take my socks OFF during a smear if I was wearing them that day! Why on earth would I? If it's cold enough for socks, then they're staying on!

It's not like they need to test your feet for a smear, is it now!

I hide my knickers too! Where is the logic, you can have a good old gawp up my fanjo but god forbid you should see my knickers

Must be at least 15 years ago but I remember my friend I worked with telling me she would be late in the next day as it was her "socks on or off dilemma day" and I knew exactly what she was talking about without any further explanation
