YANBU- yes, keep them on, you’re not there for a shag.

YABU- take them off, you look ridiculous.

Thank you for posting this light hearted problem! It’s cheered me up! Socks on for me!

LoisLane66 · 11/03/2022 21:27

@BeingATwatItsABingThing
Years ago that's what you did. No tubes with blue lines. In fact, I was about 6 months pregnant with my first when I wondered why I felt as if I had butterflies in my belly area. When my GP said I was pregnant I sat up and said 'You liar'. Yes, innocence came at a price. I later had a ship to shore convo with my DH and could hear cheering on the line. He asked me to be careful what I said as 'The whole of the North Sea shipping can hear what you say'.

Mamanyt · 11/03/2022 21:40

LOL, keep them on. Be as comfortable as you possibly can. Let's face it, those exam tables are going to make all of us look as ridiculous as possible, and who cares?

disconnected101 · 11/03/2022 21:44

@Snog

Why on Earth would you remove your socks???? Are you trying to get pregnant?

WhackusBonkus · 11/03/2022 22:12

Lol I can’t imagine why anyone would whip their socks off for a smear. It’s akin to removing your knickers for a hearing test.

I discussed my socks with the nurse at my recent smear. They had owls on and were worthy of discussion

Alfixnm · 11/03/2022 22:20

@EmpressCixi

I wear thigh high ones for a smear. No reason to be totally naked from waist down.
10 pages on and nobody has questioned this? I agree with the sock wearing... but surely lying there in thigh highs makes things MORE weird, not less?! P.s. some of these responses nearly made me wake the baby, trying so hard not to laugh out loud here!
Zilla1 · 11/03/2022 23:22

Break the binary mindset OP and take a stunt pair of socks to keep your underwear and other clothes company on the chair while you keep your primary pair of socks on to keep your feet warm or decorous..

GiraffesInScarfs · 12/03/2022 01:08

Does a smear involve an examination of your feet? What a bizarre post OP!!

Ddot · 12/03/2022 07:02

Not standing on the floor in my bare feet nooooo.

disconnected101 · 12/03/2022 09:40

Bless all the nurses who've said 'keep your socks on so your feet don't get cold.'
It sounds like code for 'I don't want your sweaty kebs beside my face, thank you very much.'

Zilla1 · 12/03/2022 12:11

It's not the oddest question our practice has been asked by any stretch during what some find an emotive experience.

I think it's a worry from the days of going to bed with people and having to make sure that you don't end up just wearing your socks. Easily done.

Trying to get pregnant!? From a Smear!? Please, please explain
MotherofAutism · 12/03/2022 13:03
@DameHelena We don't wear socks with trainers, and most definitely NOT with boots, lol. I had to look up what 'brogues' were, I thought it was an ancient Uk type of hat? Saw it was a typical comfortable shoe, and no, women don't wear socks with them. And it certainly would clash with the shoe anyway.
Eeewwwwwwwwww! Bare feet with boots!? Omg that's revolting. I feel ill

It's a joke

ilovechocolate07 · 12/03/2022 16:26

Socks on. It would feel even weirder without, like totally naked!

mrsmacmc · 12/03/2022 16:36

Socks 🧦 all the way! Usually brightly coloured or fluffy ones so my feet don't get cold (knickers folded into either my trousers or skirt 😂

Dinoteeth · 12/03/2022 17:38

Given this thread is bonkers anyway am going to ask if I'm the I only person who thinks "smear" tests should be renamed?
Reminds me of toddlers with chocolate smeared all over their faces.

How about 'plastic mini bottle brush up the fanjo test'?

They have been renamed to cervical screenings
ChannelLightVessel · 12/03/2022 22:50

Anyone else getting sock adverts as they read this?

Zilla1 · 13/03/2022 12:38

Cervical screenings a better name than smears? Agreed but resonant of Summer open air cinema screenings with a large audience sat around on picnic rugs or folding chairs eating picnics, ice creams or popcorn and discussing what's going on in front of them?

Dinoteeth · 13/03/2022 13:03

Chocolate smears vs cinema screenings Grin
Socks vs no Socks!

I actually think they should be call Womans Health Check or something.

Sidge · 13/03/2022 14:18

Technically they’re primary HPV cervical screening tests.

Known as smears from the olden days when we literally smeared the sample onto a glass slide and used liquid fixative to fix it before sending the slide to the lab!

No, that would be too confusing for those who were not born with female anatomy or do not identify as having such.

It needs the cervical part to be absolutely clear who it relates to, so as not to have complaints about discriminating against those who don't have one or don't believe having one makes them a woman.
