To think nobody really likes oysters?

(Lighthearted)

We were just watching a tv programme where somebody was eating oysters.

A friend who was here said "I don't believe anyone really likes oysters. They only eat them because they are pretentious".

I've tried them a few times and I'm not a great fan.

Was my friend right? 😜

I've had them, no desire to do so again.

jay55 · 07/03/2022 21:08

I love them. Raw or tempura. Especially natives.

MartinMartinMarti · 07/03/2022 21:08

I love them.

But I also love being splashed in the face while sea swimming, and there’s a definite similarity.

May as well walk into the English Channel and swallow a mouthful of rancid seawater as eat an oyster

A580Hojas · 07/03/2022 21:09

Yanbu. Your friend is right. Who likes swallowing a big blob of cold slimy fishy stuff whole?

Oysters and cucumber are more or less the only things I absolutely refuse to eat and I'll even give snails and liver a go.

SartresSoul · 07/03/2022 21:10

Never had them, they look like snot in a shell. My parents like them though.

ShinyMe · 07/03/2022 21:10

I have a friend who LOVES them. Like, they're her absolute favourite food and she'd always choose them if they were on a menu, and she seeks out new oyster places when she's away or in a new town or has any excuse for oysters.

I haven't ever tried them, but they look vile. I really like most shellfish, but the texture does not appeal to me.

GalaPie · 07/03/2022 21:10

They are pretentious nowadays but many many years ago they were a staple food for the poorer classes, the fishfingers and chips of their time.

Suzi888 · 07/03/2022 21:11

Giant bogey. Envy not envy

DoorLion · 07/03/2022 21:11

I like oysters but sadly they don’t like me.

NotJustACigar · 07/03/2022 21:12

I love them but can definitely understand why people wouldn't.

ImInStealthMode · 07/03/2022 21:13

I genuinely like them, but only here in Jersey. I've tried them elsewhere and they're not the same.

That said, I often get 'the fear' after I've had them, and spend the next few hours psychosomatically imagining stomach twinges.

WutheringHeights66 · 07/03/2022 21:14

Not true. DH is incredibly unpretentious and he loves them. The freshness, the taste of the sea, with a squeeze of lemon or shallot vinegar.

This is a man that grew up in a council house eating Colmans sausage casserole.

I don’t like them, but he will choose them in a fish restaurant followed by beer battered fish, chips and mushy peas so no pretentiousness just a love of things he likes.

dfendyr · 07/03/2022 21:14

Oh I love cooked oysters from Riddle & Finns

moonbedazzled · 07/03/2022 21:14

I don't get the appeal. Tasteless, a bit rubbery, and you have to put something on them to make them flavoursome. I think they're an emperors new clothes food.

ButtockUp · 07/03/2022 21:15

They're vile.
And they're usually alive when you swallow them

skeptile · 07/03/2022 21:15

DS7 loves them to the point of biting into them and smearing the creamy interior onto his lips. I drench mine in lemon and swallow as quickly as possible. DH is quite fond. We eat them regularly (live walking distance from a seafood market). It's the only thing I eat which infuses me with energy. They're magic.

itsnotdeep · 07/03/2022 21:15

I agree, the Emperor's New Clothes of food.

No one can admit to it, but they're basically little pieces of snot.

TiddyTidTwo · 07/03/2022 21:16

Snot in an ashtray

pointythings · 07/03/2022 21:16

I love them. Food of the gods.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 07/03/2022 21:16

Ooh I quite like them. Always like to get a starter of 6 oysters on ice to share with DP.

DelilahBucket · 07/03/2022 21:16

Me, DH and DS14 love them. On their own, with a squeeze of lemon or with a Thai dressing. They've got to be super fresh. Some of the best we've had was at a port town in France.

Are they known for upsetting your stomach?

The first time I tried them I just thought they were a lot of fuss about nothing, but they've actually really grown on me.

The first few times I ate them I just let them slide straight down (partially because of the ick factor), but I've now started properly feeling the texture of them, giving them a good tonguing, and savouring the taste (admittedly mostly a salty, lemony taste, but still one I enjoy), so yeah, lush.
