To think nobody really likes oysters?

(Lighthearted)

We were just watching a tv programme where somebody was eating oysters.

A friend who was here said "I don't believe anyone really likes oysters. They only eat them because they are pretentious".

I've tried them a few times and I'm not a great fan.

Was my friend right? 😜

@SartresSoul

Never had them, they look like snot in a shell. My parents like them though.
Yes that is exactly what they look like. I cannot imagine slipping that goop down my throat and not gagging.
warmeduppizza · 07/03/2022 22:44

My late uncle, a fisherman, would offer me oysters for breakfast when I was a kid. Not eating a full dozen before 9am would be considered very rude. I learned to just knock them back and think of something else.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/03/2022 22:45

Very overrated IMO, at least in the raw state. I’m sure they’d be much nicer cooked.

It’s not that long since they were considered poor people’s food.

IIRC there’s a line in Dickens’ Pickwick Papers that goes something like, ‘It’s a werry remarkable circumstance how oysters and poverty go together.’

LoveFall · 07/03/2022 22:47

I love them, but very seldom have them.

ethelredonagoodday · 07/03/2022 22:52

Love them.

ronjobbins · 07/03/2022 22:56

@skeptile

DS7 loves them to the point of biting into them and smearing the creamy interior onto his lips. I drench mine in lemon and swallow as quickly as possible. DH is quite fond. We eat them regularly (live walking distance from a seafood market). It's the only thing I eat which infuses me with energy. They're magic.
‘Creamy interior’ 🤮
Xiaoxiong · 07/03/2022 22:57

I love them, they're like the distilled essence of the ocean, the clean salt spray, the smell, that slight shock as when you come up and get slapped in the face by a wave.

I totally understand why people who don't like them feel that way though!

ConsuelaHammock · 07/03/2022 22:59

I wouldn’t even try them and I’ll eat most things.
Except snails and mussels.

Lunificent · 07/03/2022 23:02

They used to be my favourite food, I genuinely loved them. But then they started making me violently sick so I’ve given them up.

RampantIvy · 07/03/2022 23:11

I tried them to see what all the fuss was about and really disliked them. Yes, they taste of the sea and I don't like swallowing the sea.

Chely · 07/03/2022 23:18

I like the oysters from the icecream van

sweetkitty · 07/03/2022 23:23

There is no amount of money on the world that would persuade me to eat an oyster. Are they not filter feeders? So they filter the sea water and they sometimes can’t tell the difference between good stuff and rubbish like toxins and bacteria su they are full of then in. High concentrations.

A580Hojas · 07/03/2022 23:38

@Chely

I like the oysters from the icecream van
Oh yes! They're bloody lovely.
Crankley · 07/03/2022 23:58

Snotty globules - ugh.

guhjof · 08/03/2022 00:01

Love love love!!! But they have to be super fresh

ISpyCobraKai · 08/03/2022 00:05

I love the.

RockinHorseShit · 08/03/2022 00:17

Sea salty snot. No thanks 🤢

TizerorFizz · 08/03/2022 00:22

Tempura oysters as made by Nathan Outlaw are amazing. Seasalty ocean fresh with a light sizzling batter. Nothing beats them.

Person123456 · 08/03/2022 00:30

my stepdad loves them and muscles i think its just personal taste kinda like marmalade maybe, i hate them but then again i hate all seafood

AdaColeman · 08/03/2022 00:34

I love them, especially done in tempura or grilled. They taste of the essence of the sea. Eating them raw is a link with our primeval past.

I like sea urchins, snails, mussels and eel also.

PrincessNutella · 08/03/2022 01:18

The husband and son just paid $20 for a half dozen of them yesterday, inexplicably.

dipdye · 08/03/2022 01:21

Vile.

Who'd pick an oyster over a burger

tigerbird · 08/03/2022 01:27

I like them in cooked French dishes, and very occasionally have them raw - they’re okay and I quite like them, but I don’t particularly rush to eat them as a delicacy. I tend to only have them on holiday by the sea, though. Must be ten years or more since I last had an oyster, weirdly enough!

CockingASnook · 08/03/2022 01:42

I love them despite having the worst Christmas and NYE ever after a dodgy one. Definitely check where the oysters were grown! The best I’ve had were in Australia. A friend there loves them so much she had 24 at a time. They’re chilled and slippery and briny. Delicious!

honeyrider · 08/03/2022 01:46

I like them, grew up eating them when in season as my Dad sold them to restaurants and hotels. I like them raw from the west coast of Ireland.

My mother sometimes cooked them in a stew type recipe.
