To think nobody really likes oysters?

(Lighthearted)

We were just watching a tv programme where somebody was eating oysters.

A friend who was here said "I don't believe anyone really likes oysters. They only eat them because they are pretentious".

I've tried them a few times and I'm not a great fan.

Was my friend right? 😜

Oysters r delicious. You don't like them op, fine. Spoiler alert: everyone is not the same as you.

I'm sure my original post said it was lighthearted. You obviously don't understand that!

@AdaColeman ive just googled that, it made me feel queasy just reading it! Why would anyone choose to eat that?!!! Sad

Flowersandhearts · 08/03/2022 23:34

They're great eaten raw if you want to catch Norovirus. A really high percentage contain that and other nasties carried in sewerage.

WeasilyPleased · 09/03/2022 00:14

Your friend was spot on. Oysters are salty globs of snotty horror.

Sportslady44 · 09/03/2022 00:50

No wouldn't eat.

angieloumc · 09/03/2022 07:45

Anonymous48 you'd be upset if your DH wouldn't try someone he didn't think he'd like? That's sad, not the fact that pp wouldn't try it.

angieloumc · 09/03/2022 07:47

Something not someone obviously 😳

RonniePickering · 09/03/2022 07:49

Didn't Micheal Winner get really ill from eating a bad oyster, which he never really recovered from and eventually led to his failing health and death? I remember reading an interview with him and the journalist asked if he had any advice for their readers and Mr Winner replied "Yes, never eat oysters".
Yes, I believe he ate a bad batch in the Carribbean & lost 5st. Died within a year?

I grew up in Whitstable. But my Mother believed the only part of a fish that was edible was its fingers so we never ate seafood.
So, the first one I ate was en gratin in Mexico!

I like them. They are fresh, super healthy & very delicately flavoured.
But they MUST be local and fresh imo.

That's such a shame. I would be upset if my husband wouldn't even try one, because sharing a dozen oysters with your loved one is such a lovely experience. Fair enough if you try one and don't like it, but to not even try? Very sad.

If I don't like the look, smell, texture and overall idea (eg swallowing whole) then I'm likely to not want to try something. My DH is quite able to enjoy oysters himself, while I eat something of my own choice. (I like lots of other seafood)

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/03/2022 13:47

Both times been violently ill, not keen on finding out a third time.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/03/2022 13:49

What?! You can die from oysters? Well that has sealed my decision.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/03/2022 13:50

Once in Thailand the day before a flight home. Thank god for immodium.

Second at Fish restaurant in London Bridge. Complained and they said thanks for letting us know.

Sprucewillis · 09/03/2022 14:09

Yes, I would, if the only reason he wouldn't try it was because "he thinks he wouldn't like it" (rather than a dietary or sensory issue for example).

Well first of all, you don't swallow them whole. That would be a waste. I don't understand not wanting to eat something because you don't like the way something looks. You might be missing out on something wonderful! I can understand not liking the texture of something, but how do you know until you try it?

Fair enough if the smell is enough to turn you off. (Although I would argue that if the smell of oysters is more than a subtle scent of the ocean there's probably something wrong with that oyster. They don't have much of a smell.)

I never knew this ...

On 1 January 2007, Winner acquired the bacterial infection Vibrio vulnificuss^ from eating an oyster in Barbados. He almost had a leg amputated, and verged on the brink of death several times. Before recovering, Winner was infected with the 'hospital superbug' MRSA.[41] In September 2011, he was admitted to hospital with food poisoning after eating steak tartare, a raw meat dish, four days in a row. The dish is not recommended for those with a weak immune system, and in retrospect Winner regarded his decision to eat it as 'stupid'
