To think nobody really likes oysters?

(Lighthearted)

We were just watching a tv programme where somebody was eating oysters.

A friend who was here said "I don't believe anyone really likes oysters. They only eat them because they are pretentious".

I've tried them a few times and I'm not a great fan.

Was my friend right? 😜

I love them! I had a zinc deficiency once (lord knows why) and loved eating them loads because I 'had' too.

This thread is making me crave them, I'm off to find oysters tomorrow! Shame only three or four of the dozen ever work though. Wink

@dipdye

Vile.

Who'd pick an oyster over a burger

Me.
TomPinch · 08/03/2022 04:03

@MerryMarigold

I've noticed that everyone who 'loves them' hasn't said why. There really is nothing to love. Slimy, salty... 🤔.... maybe the aphrodisiac aspect is in the similarity to swallowing semen.
And they look a bit like
Bigoldmachine · 08/03/2022 05:37

I’d go one further and say no one likes coffee or beer at first, we train ourselves to like it

HELLITHURT · 08/03/2022 05:41

Love them and I've been to the oyster festival in Whitstable, brilliant!

Guineas battered oysters are wonderful.

Subeccoo · 08/03/2022 06:32

I've had actual food poisoning from them. Never been more ill in my life.
But I've eaten them many many times since and been fine. I absolutely love them. I'm still new ish in my oyster discovery, only first trying them a few months before lockdown but I've been to Borough Market loads of times since then and always have some from Richard Haywards stand, they're beautiful.

FelicityFlops · 08/03/2022 06:43

I and several of my family love oysters. My favourites are the big, creamy ones from Carlingford Lough.
I am not so keen on deep fried offerings, but a beef and oyster pie is delicious.
And you definitely need to chew them :-)

GADDay · 08/03/2022 07:00

Love love love them.

Icy chardonnay, oysters with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of Tabasco. Delicious.

Honestly one of my favourite foods. But I adore snails and mussels too...

Well, I’ve lived somewhere with a highly successful oyster festival that has been being mobbed annually since the 1950s, so that’s a lot of people pretending.

Ratonastick · 08/03/2022 07:14

Nope, just nope. I bloody love shellfish and would happily live on it for the rest of my days, but eating oysters is just a joke that got out of hand.

CourtRand · 08/03/2022 07:16

My dad loves them. They make me gip.

Plasmodesmata · 08/03/2022 07:28

Only ever eaten one, last year, posh seafood restaurant as part of a seafood platter. Spent the next 2 days throwing up. The oyster wasn't worth the resulting norovirus so not tempted to eat another.

gogohm · 08/03/2022 07:32

I love them but I eat all kinds of raw seafood Grin

Love to go to that!!
HELLITHURT · 08/03/2022 07:35

@HaggisBurger it might be Whitstable, I've been and highly recommend!

Ostryga · 08/03/2022 07:35

I love them, but sadly I am wildly allergic to them and don’t love them enough to vomit for 12 hours after one.

I’d eaten them happily for years until one bad one and tried them twice after to terrible results. Haven’t had any for 7 years. Very hard life I lead I know Grin

It might be! Love Whitstable. But I think it begins with C and you’d drink pints of Guinness there 🧐 @Erinyes

HELLITHURT · 08/03/2022 07:54

@HaggisBurger please tell me that place!

HaggisBurger · 08/03/2022 07:58

ThackeryBinks · 08/03/2022 08:00

As my Nan would say, I like them but they don't like me!

HELLITHURT · 08/03/2022 08:04
Thank you 🙏
Erinyes · 08/03/2022 08:05

@HaggisBurger and @HELLITHURT, I was actually thinking of the Galway one, bu Clarenbridge works too! (The Cork one is more Murphy’s than Guinness…)

Fortyminutes · 08/03/2022 08:09

I’ve had them raw a few times because i thought I should and didn’t get the appeal.
I had a delicious battered one at a fish market though

Vampirethriller · 08/03/2022 08:11

I love them. I like all raw seafood type things though.

I'm looking at flights and Airbnb, I have family in Cork! Never knew about the festival, I'm doing it!
