To think nobody really likes oysters?

(Lighthearted)

We were just watching a tv programme where somebody was eating oysters.

A friend who was here said "I don't believe anyone really likes oysters. They only eat them because they are pretentious".

I've tried them a few times and I'm not a great fan.

Was my friend right? 😜

I like oysters, but last time I had them I drank alcohol too and had a reaction - was sooooo sick for a week after. Kinda put me off, but before that incident I always enjoyed oysters.

ButtockUp there's an interesting Salon article which discusses the oyster debate in the vegan community. Prof Peter Singer weighed in saying that they are acceptable to consume by vegans as in the process of 'enshelling' their brain stem is completely absorbed and they no longer experience sensation. Anyway, it's a big debate in some circles. Can't link article in this device, but it's pretty fascinating.

ImInStealthMode · 07/03/2022 21:21

@buddylicious Only if you're very unlucky and get a bad one, but when it's bad it's BAD - I believe that's it, you can never have them again without it reoccurring.

I've never had ill effects but friends have and their experiences have given me the twitch about eating them Confused

rookiemere · 07/03/2022 21:22

I really wanted to like them after reading in a Martin Amis novel that they are alive when you squeeze the lemon juice on them and are flinching.
But they taste vile.

Rainbowshit · 07/03/2022 21:22

Wish I did like them. It seems such a luxury and I love all other types of fish and shellfish.

longtompot · 07/03/2022 21:23

My dh, ds and dd all love those tinned smoked oysters bleurgh I am not a shellfish fan, especially things that look odd on shells like mussels. I'll eat prawns at a push but I don't really see the appeal.

Thanks.

Well that's another reason for me not to have them again then!

That's very interesting. If you find the article, please post it.

I've actually never tried oysters, but I do love mussels as long as they are piping hot and in a garlicky sauce.

XelaM · 07/03/2022 21:25

They are delicious!!!

thefirstmrsrochester · 07/03/2022 21:28

Love them. Adore them.

lifeuphigh · 07/03/2022 21:29

I love them. I still remember eating my first one at a restaurant in France aged about 11, and enjoying it so much that my lovely uncle bought me a dozen.

GeneLovesJezebel · 07/03/2022 21:30

It reminds me of what I used to have to aspirate out of chest infections 🤢🤮

TristesseDurera · 07/03/2022 21:31

I really love them and if money were no object, I'd have them every day
With champagne.

OverByYer · 07/03/2022 21:35

It took me a few tries to grow to like them.
The best I had were in Arcahon in France which are known for their oysters, and they were delicious.
I don't swallow them whole , I like to chew them a bit , its like eating lovely fresh sea air.
God I d sound pretentious but I am not.

FastFood · 07/03/2022 21:37

I love oysters. Since I was a child. One day I heard that they were alive and decided to never have them again but quickly changed my mind.
I'm French and I also eat snails so not scared by snotty textured food.

Houseplantmad · 07/03/2022 21:39

Love them. Grew up on battered oysters and chips! Delicious.

TheFlis12345 · 07/03/2022 21:39

I love them, nothing pretentious about it. My favourite are oysters with a squeeze of lemon and splash of green Tabasco. I love salty food though so can understand why they are not to everyone’s taste.

FenceFuckery · 07/03/2022 21:42

Oysters are amazing. They have to be super fresh and with either just lemon or a mignonette dressing. NEVER with cheese - oysters kilpatrick are an insult to them.

The best ones in the world are Bluff oysters from NZ. Unlike any oysters I’ve had anywhere else, and they even convert non-oyster people!

mizzo · 07/03/2022 21:44

I've never tried them because I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to swallow them and would end up embarrassing myself as I once did with a creme caramel years ago Blush

FreeButtonBee · 07/03/2022 21:45

LOVE them. With nice sharp mignonette. And even these days they are aren’t that dear. A pound an oyster and I live in poncy London. 6 or 8 for a special starter - light and refreshing and totally exhilarating. You’d pay just as much for some Asda beige prawn sharing platter.

That said I can totally understand why people don’t like them. But to say they are pretentious is a bit excessive.

HaggisBurger · 07/03/2022 21:46

I genuinely love them. As does my boyfriend. They do make you horny too 😉

SirenSays · 07/03/2022 21:48

Well that's oysters off my list.
A proper good tonguing, creamy interior, chest infections and snot...?! Oh god I can't cope 🤮

Winnerwinnerveggiedinner · 07/03/2022 21:50

What’s so horny about swallowing a dollop of fishy phlegm? 🙂

3luckystars · 07/03/2022 21:51

Rick Stein loves them but that’s all, and he could be just pretending for the tv.

He ate some horrible bean muck with walnut oil last night in France and it looked like a plate of sick, he said he loved it.
He then ate the inside of a sea urchin, it looked like a giant corona virus with black eggs and he was in heaven.

So I’m summary, Rick Stein may or may like oysters but we can’t really trust him.

evilharpy · 07/03/2022 21:53

Can't stand them. Would rather starve.

I could happily eat a massive bowl of mussels every day for the rest of my life though.
