Sex scenes in movies

Now I’m not a prude. I enjoy sex just as much as the next person. But I’m fed up of every other scene in a movie being a sex scene. It’s boring and often takes away from the storyline. Am I the only one who feels this way? I think it would be better if it was simply implied, rather than showing the whole scene. It’s just unnecessary and annoying. Anyone agree or am I in the minority here?

@MorningStarling

YABU, I don't know what films you enjoy but sex scenes are pretty rare. To me the main problem is that the scenes are so obviously false, I prefer things like 9 Songs or Shortbus which actually show people having sex rather than people simulating it (even if they're not great films, at least they tried). It's not like it has to be faked (which obviously is the case in scenes where people get killed etc.). Sex scenes should be real, even if they are not graphic.

I also find it strange how obviously fake most sex scenes are. It's like actors are able to recreate other emotions but when it comes to sex scenes everything has to be a caricature.

When I was younger I wanted to be an actor. Not a porn star.
DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 06/03/2022 19:56

I find them excruciating.

We're not thick. We know they're going to be shagging.

It's so gratuitous.

I recently watched a great show on Netflix called Startup.

My god, the amount of sex was ridiculous. It was so unnecessary to the plot.

@looklikeanelephant

I never put that post that you quoted me in there! ^ Shock I have only put one post on this thread and that is the one directly above yours!!!!!

MurmuratingStarling · 06/03/2022 19:58

@looklikeanelephant SHIT sorry! You were quoting morningstarling. IGNORE my last post. SORRY! Blush

keeptalkinghappytalk · 06/03/2022 20:16

One day young female actresses will say no to being porny fodder in dire plots… we’re professional actors and want to perform with dignity and skill … stop pimping us, directors, producers, writers …..

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/03/2022 20:18

This is how old films dealt with the subject of sex scenes - showing the very bare minimum and allowing you to fill in the rest (so to speak) with your imagination.

And they call today's offerings progress??!!

Haggisfish3 · 06/03/2022 20:20

I loved the sex scenes in normal people though.

ApocalypseNowt · 06/03/2022 20:31

@Sobeyondthehills I'm pretty sure I watched that film!

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was a dinosaur. When the POV was the dinosaur everything had a green filter on it.

And there was a reeeeeally long sex scene right in the middle (they were having sex in the back of a flat bed truck iirc & the dinosaur was watching them).

Dino let them finish before attacking Grin

XelaM · 06/03/2022 20:34

100000% agree OP!

Shows like "The Tudors" are basically pornography in fancy dress.

Does nothing for me or the story

Brefugee · 06/03/2022 20:38

There's one in Eternals. It was entirely unnecessary to show that the two characters loved each other. It wasn't graphic but not needed at all.

came here to say the same thing. I have given up on Outlander because the sex and the torture is tedious.(not as tedious as all the "ooch ye poor wee lassie I'll mak ye some porrige")

187mob · 06/03/2022 20:40

To the pp who asked where I’m watching Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal, I’m watching it on Amazon Prime but I rented it because that’s how deep my obsession for this gorgeous man runs. Smile

Momicrone · 06/03/2022 20:41

Haggisfish, why did you love the sex scenes in normal people? I'd be quite sad if that was my 21 year old daughters first a fing job.

Giggorata · 06/03/2022 20:45

Outlander got very tiresome for me, not just because of the sex.

The majority of sex scenes nowadays weirdly involve the woman keeping on her bra and sometimes even knickers, as far as I can tell.

Then, the morning after one or other partner will roll back the covers to reveal pants on both partners. Who puts their pants on after sex, if you aren’t leaving the house?

This is before we get to discuss the preponderance of blow jobs and massive orgasms for the woman after very little, if any, foreplay.

Ludicrous.

Itslit · 06/03/2022 20:49

It’s to do with what you’re watching. I haven’t seen a sex scene in TV in months, and I watch every night.

savehannah · 06/03/2022 20:49

My main quibble with sex scenes is they nearly always show women orgasming all over the place due to straight PIV sex, very rarely show anything in the way of clitoral stimulation. I'm sure this, combined with porn sex leads to men having no idea about how women experience good sex.

BoodleBug51 · 06/03/2022 20:51

I had to stop watching Grey's Anatomy.

How could people get medical degrees and not be able to undo a bra??

Mind boggling.

Londoncallingtothefarawaytowns · 06/03/2022 20:51

Me. I can’t be arsed with it either.
Mostly, because we now know for certain that the actresses in them don’t particularly enjoy doing them. I find it exploitative.
I stopped watching GoT because the sex and sexual violence was too much for me.
I don’t like rape used as a form of entertainment
I often fast forward. Like an old lady tutting Grin
Have you ever seen the red carpet interview of Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson at Fifty shades of grey? She’s immediately becomes an award teen when her mother tells the camera that she won’t let her watch the film, and Melanie assured her it won’t be that graphic surely?

Epli · 06/03/2022 20:52

I am very much waiting for the second season of Bridgerton, hoping Jonathan Bailey will be naked at least 20% of his screen time ;)

tearinghairout · 06/03/2022 20:56

Yes. Yanbu. The sex scene in the first episode of the new series of Killing Eve is hilarious - you'll love it as it is very, very short :)
I watched The Tourist series on TV and found myself enjoying the fact that the sex scenes basically showed before and after without all the gratuitous stuff in between and just got on with the story. It was excellently done.

Londoncallingtothefarawaytowns · 06/03/2022 20:58

*also if no one else has mentioned it : the bee SATc / and just like that
NO ONE asked to see Big wanking.
Boake.

Momicrone · 06/03/2022 21:00

Haha yeah, I was watching that with my daughter, jeez

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/03/2022 21:01

Urghhh I hate them too and I hate people sucking face on screen too. It's like a pair of octopi.

LittleGwyneth · 06/03/2022 21:02

Love a good sex scene. Can't imagine watching a show where people die and feeling fine about that but upset about a bit of shagging. But then this is mumsnet, where most people don't like sex.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 06/03/2022 21:11

There must be a very low proportion of screen writers and directors who are “breast men” or, alternatively many savvy actresses with watertight no nudity clauses in their contracts

@boatyardblues

Grey's Anatomy is an America show that is on regular broadcast television. Nudity is not allowed on those channels in America. The actresses dont need a "no nudity clause" and the directors may love breasts very much LOL doesnt matter in this case.
