Sex scenes in movies

Now I’m not a prude. I enjoy sex just as much as the next person. But I’m fed up of every other scene in a movie being a sex scene. It’s boring and often takes away from the storyline. Am I the only one who feels this way? I think it would be better if it was simply implied, rather than showing the whole scene. It’s just unnecessary and annoying. Anyone agree or am I in the minority here?

Arghhh. I just had an 80s cringe flashback. Teen me and sibling watched Top Gun with my parents on VHS and my Dad cracked jokes in that scene because it was so uncomfortable for us all. The horror!

It's the microphones picking up the slurping kissing noises that's the worst. Sounds like someone sucking soup off a spoon.

Sound doesn't work like that on the movie though. It's added later. In other words, that was a deliberate decision to have the slurping noises!

YABU, I don't know what films you enjoy but sex scenes are pretty rare. To me the main problem is that the scenes are so obviously false, I prefer things like 9 Songs or Shortbus which actually show people having sex rather than people simulating it (even if they're not great films, at least they tried). It's not like it has to be faked (which obviously is the case in scenes where people get killed etc.). Sex scenes should be real, even if they are not graphic.

I also find it strange how obviously fake most sex scenes are. It's like actors are able to recreate other emotions but when it comes to sex scenes everything has to be a caricature.

Pmsl at this. You're getting TV/movies mixed up with porn. There's probably a billion real sex scenes on the internet if that floats your boat.

Although can I just say, currently watching a movie called Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal. There has now been 2 sex scenes in the space of 14 minutes

I wonder how the actors can do them. Especially the raunchy scenes.

I find it tedious. Ruins a good story on the whole and adds nothing at all.

I feel like this in absolutely every programme and film which contains a sex scene.
Totally unnecessary, we know what’s going to happen, you don’t need to show whole scene, move on!
Gets my fist every time and I have to FF until it’s finished!
I’m no prude either btw, but bloody annoys me!! What’s the damn point?!! If I wanted to see sex scenes, I’d watch porn!

I completely agree. I find the sex scenes almost always dull and an interruption to the actual story. Could just be implied. Wish they would not do them.

This is what I find. The plot doesn't move on at all, there's nothing of interest to see here. It is, indeed, like watching someone on the toilet or blowing their nose.

Why can't they all be like the very final shot of North By Northwest (an aerial shot of a train going into a tunnel in the mountains). Pure class.

Haha same and that was so bloody unrealistic too. Me and DP just looked at each other and laughed as if DP tried to hoik me up with one hand like that he’d be on the floor squashed as I’d have face planted on top of him 🤣

It just looked so weird but then I think that whole bloody film was weird. DH and I spent the following week saying 'Gucci' to each other in ridiculously bad over the top Italian accents.

I grew up watching James Bond movies with my dad. No graphic sex but even the mere suggestion of it made be uncomfortable 😂

I find the slurping, smacking sound of the kissing really stomach turning sometimes especially if as they go to kiss their mouths are wide open. Horrible!

I've just watched North and South (Richard Armitage as a brooding mill owner ) and I'm trying to imagine if the intensely romantic final scene would have been improved by Mr Thornton getting his kit off, Margaret dropping her drawers and a bit of thrusting and moaning going on, with bare bums.

I hadn't realised how much teen sex there was in Normal People until I watched the first 3 episodes on a train with a stranger sitting beside me. That was an error.

One of the final sex scenes in Bridgerton between the 2 main characters was completely necessary to the story. I thought it was done well although was pretty graphic. This is rare in cinema though!

The other thing that annoys me is the gratuitous close up nudity but only if the actors are young and fit.

I was watching boardwalk empire recently and Steve Buscemi who not your typical young, muscled actor, does sleep with quite a few women in it. The sex scenes with him show almost no bare skin for him, everything is under the covers. They still somehow manage to show a lot of nudity for the women he sleeps with in the story (usually without him on the bed or as they walk away), none of whom are anywhere near his age.

The sex scenes for some of the other actors in the same show where the relationships are between two younger, fitter people show so much that they are almost soft porn (as do a lot of TV programmes nowadays)

I get bored of it but I also get annoyed at the fact that only the absolutely toned, beautiful young bodies are shown. I'd prefer that no prolonged close up scenes of sex are shown but if they are going to do that, I'd like it to be just a tiny bit more realistic about who has sex (ie most people, even if they don't have perfect bodies)

One perhaps. The other God knows how many were completely gratuitous.

If you still want sex scenes but not women orgasming with 2 minutes of man on top I'd suggest looking for films with female directors - there aren't many, but they do exist!

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is currently on iPlayer, very sexy but very much female gaze and no daft sex scenes.

There's one in Eternals. It was entirely unnecessary to show that the two characters loved each other. It wasn't graphic but not needed at all. And in This is Going to Hurt. Just not required at all.

Absolutely agree about the sex scenes in this is going to hurt.One of them just went on and on and on. Total cringe fest.

Bridgerton season 1 episode 5 (I think). Dear god enough with the shagging. I binge watched the whole series and gave up with that episode. It wasn't sexy , it was just tedious.

I agree about Bridgerton, I was watching when I have covid and every time Dh popped in to check on me I was watching a sex scene, he hadn’t seen it so I found myself explaining there was some story in between!
And yes, thr minute a woman is touched any where her eyes start rolling back in ecstasy, no one is that good at a thigh grope!

I like the waves crashing on the shore or bedroom doors closing of old Hollywood films. So much nicer

I can't actually remember the last film I saw sex scene in.
