To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

We have quite a bit planned, both abroad and at home.

We’ll go on those we’ve booked but I’m feeling miserable about the world situation. I won’t be booking any more holidays abroad, much more likely to go away in the uk. Just need the comfort of home. I know other people will feel differently and want to go abroad to forget though.

I wonder if all the price rises will put people off planning extra small trips, weekends away etc, as they will spend what will have been disposable income just on living expenses.

Startuplife · 05/03/2022 08:52

We have never been U.K. holiday people so probably not your target audience. However, during covid we did two (Isle of Wight & Brighton). I was amazed at how much more expensive it was than our previous long weekends in Spain drinking €3 cava and tapas.
Personally I crave the sun and U.K. holidays often feel like hard work trying to fill the days when it’s grey and miserable. This year we have long weekends booked in Porto, Palma and Malaga and will also book a week in the summer likely to Greece.

EthelTheAardvark · 05/03/2022 08:53

We've got a self-catering week in this country booked in early summer, and will probably go for something similar in the autumn. We like holidays in this country anyway and don't really want the faff with covid tests etc for going abroad, and I don't think we can make any assumptions that they won't continue to be needed.

Benjispruce5 · 05/03/2022 08:55

We were about to start looking but holding off re the Ukraine situation.

Do you not think someone, somewhere is being exploited for that €3 cava and tapas?

OP - I have no holiday plans this year. I need to go to Cornwall for a significant event so I might try and do a few days around that since it's a long way to go.

TheGriffle · 05/03/2022 08:59

We’re holidaying for a week in the uk this year like we always do. (Booked it last year) next year I don’t think we can afford to next year though which worries me.

SunflowerSmith · 05/03/2022 08:59

We've got a touring caravan and have put it on a 12 month seasonal site so will use that as a holiday home, last year we had 70+ nights there and plan to do the same this year.
We couldn't afford to do it any other way now we have school aged children.

Frazzled2207 · 05/03/2022 09:00

We are hopefully off to Portugal for a week which will be first time abroad for us for 4 years
We love uk holidays and will do some kind of uk break this year.

Once upon a time I’d go a abroad 3/4 times a year it just doesn’t seem feasible anymore for a wide variety of reasons; in the main, holidaying in the UK has been a pleasant surprise

Unfortunately however I don’t find uk holidays particularly good value.

MaryAndHerNet · 05/03/2022 09:01

No plans. With Petr now being over 160, I won't be going far.
With coat of living shooting up, I can't afford to go far.
With nuclear destruction on the horizon, probably not the best time to pay deposits etc.

TheElusivePotato · 05/03/2022 09:01

Have an overseas holiday booked, but as PP says we won’t book any more until we see how cost of living / Ukraine pans out. Will probably do a couple of weekends and a week in the summer holidays in the UK.

Happydays321 · 05/03/2022 09:02

We've booked a week in a cottage in Cornwall and the same in Northumberland. We booked before the ukranian crisis but would still have booked. We will be self catering for some meals but we will be eating and drinking out.

MatildaTheCat · 05/03/2022 09:05

One week in northern Spain, one week in France, one week in Cornwall.

We are overdue a long haul trip but not ready for that yet.

raspberryjamchicken · 05/03/2022 09:05

Camping in France. After last year's soggy 10 days in a caravan on the Isle of Wight I really can't wait! We were going to do Easter in the UK somewhere but now France has relaxed vaccine requirements for our just-turned 12 year old we are going there at Easter too.

underneaththeash · 05/03/2022 09:06

UK wise - we have a night in Birmingham, DH is going to the Hay Festival for 3 nights,
We've in SC Cornwall for a week, SC in northumberland for a week and edinburgh festival for a few days. For a week's SC holiday, I'd say we eat out twice in the evening and once or twice for lunch.
In edinburgh/hay/brum we're staying in a hotel and will eat out for all meals.

MazzleDazzle · 05/03/2022 09:09

Staying in the UK instead of going abroad. Haven’t been abroad since 2019. I don’t mind, actually. Plenty of lovely places in the UK.

We’re renting a cottage and will probably go camping at some point to.

Jduh · 05/03/2022 09:10

We always holiday in the UK. Usually Norfolk. No holiday this year though due to DD2 nursery fees and other rising costs. We'll do some day trips over summer.

MintyFreshBreath · 05/03/2022 09:10

Canaries in June.

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/03/2022 09:10

No plans at all, it if we did go away it would be abroad.

BonV0yage · 05/03/2022 09:12

Obviously the VAT rate doesn't help businesses or consumers - 20% of any booking goes straight to HMRC, it was reduced during Covid but goes up again soon. A lot of countries only have 5% for tourism to make them competitive with other countries.

Northumberland at Easter
UK South coast in May
Germany in July
France in September
Spain in October
When in The UK we will usually have either lunch or evening meal out every day

Lockheart · 05/03/2022 09:13

Obviously the VAT rate doesn't help businesses or consumers - 20% of any booking goes straight to HMRC, it was reduced during Covid but goes up again soon. A lot of countries only have 5% for tourism to make them competitive with other countries.
But conversely, you can claim 20% of many of your costs straight back from HMRC.
hazelnutlatte · 05/03/2022 09:13

We have a holiday in the Lake District planned and a holiday abroad. Tbh I would probably cancel the holiday abroad if I could and book a second holiday in the UK instead - but we are going with friends so I can't. I really can't be arsed with dealing with covid rules and regulations, and also with so much uncertainty in the world now I'd prefer not to be flying anywhere.
I'm not a sun worshipper though so generally enjoy uk holidays.

Bickles · 05/03/2022 09:14

2020 we did UK holidays, Northumberland and Somerset.
2021 we did Devon and Norfolk but managed a week in the Canaries in October.
This year we have Canaries and Majorca booked but have a week in Northumberland and a long weekend in the Peak District too. So going back towards pre pandemic of more holidays abroad but still short breaks in the U.K.

Bickles · 05/03/2022 09:16

We will eat out a few times on a UK holiday but not every day.

LoudSnoringDog · 05/03/2022 09:18

Dublin March
Orlando may
Rhodes august
New York December

We did Cornwall last year in July and whilst the weather was glorious, it was so overcrowded that I am put off visiting again for a while.
