To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

A long weekend in Totnes, Devon and 10 nights in Corfu for much needed sun.
The holiday in totnes costs 100 a night for 4 in an air b and b. In Corfu i rekon its half that.

Chely · 05/03/2022 10:56

Never had plans to holiday. We may not even do day trips with eating out due to the price rises we're taking on this year. On top of utilities our dog's insurance doubled to over 1k a year.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/03/2022 11:02

Yorkshire for a week at Easter.
France at Whitsun for a week or two.
France in August.
Had it not been for Ukraine, I'd be in France now.
Looking forward to being able to snatch a week of winter sun in Feb again.

RiaG91 · 05/03/2022 11:02

My fiancé is going abroad for 3weeks at the end of August. This was a US tour that was booked pre-Covid and has been postponed twice.

We probably won't be going anywhere as a family this year, but it's purely down to having our LO in February and I don't want to travel abroad until he is older.

zingally · 05/03/2022 11:03

We've got a cruise booked for the latter half of May. 7 nights round France and Spain. Haven't been abroad since April of 2019, so well overdue.

May also do a UK mini-break in September, but nothing booked or decided yet.

Simonjt · 05/03/2022 11:04

We’ve booked magical pride, we’re also going to Ottawa in August as I’m playing in the Bingham cup, it’s too long to leave my husband with the kids so they’re coming along to make a holiday out of it.

We have a small holiday home and a little camper van, so we rarely for holiday accommodation in the UK beyond the odd hotel night. But we do still like visiting attractions, eat out etc, but we do find the UK can sometimes be high cost and not great quality.

DementedPanda · 05/03/2022 11:07

We have a holiday booked in the UK. It's a five and half hour drive away so dh is making noises about cancelling because of the cost of fuel.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/03/2022 11:07

We have booked to go on various holidays this year - Crete, Norfolk, London, Belfast, Harris/Lewis/Skye and the Scottish Borders. I have a big birthday this year and three of these holidays are birthday related.

Ilikewinter · 05/03/2022 11:19

Id love to go abroad, pre void we were ling haul travellers bit now have a puppy so have quit the highlife! Weve got a week in Wales end of April and then planning a week somewhere in June and September - until ive seen how the prices have sky rocketed so thats now on hold. We went down South the previous 2 years and really enjoyed it, but we got glorious weather cant imagine it being the same in the rain. Theres so much of the UK we havent seen so thats our plan to spend the next few years travelling round.

CantStandMeow · 05/03/2022 11:20

We have a week in the UK booked, will probably do a combination of self-catering and eating out. Same as we will do abroad for the booked holidays there.

Frazzled2207 · 05/03/2022 11:20

I do think UK holidays will remain more popular than in the past as exchange rates and other factors make it tricky to go abroad.

jessy100 · 05/03/2022 11:30

We never holiday in the uk apart from an odd weekend away. Too expensive, and never really a great experience tbh. Have a few holidays booked this year. . Off to Budapest soon

1Day2GoAgain · 05/03/2022 16:28

Currently on holiday in UK, its cold & wet. However, we will be making the most of it

Some more trips booked for later in the year

Not going abroad this year

Figgygal · 05/03/2022 16:31

We usually go away 2/3 times a year in uk but this year we going abroad. Hoping to maybe get 4 nights away in summer holidays too.
Also have trips to family booked which limit leave for other things

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/03/2022 16:43

Last Autumn we spent 2 weeks in a house in Bamburg-which we def did as a substitute for "abroad" it was really a lovely break.

We have been booking more short UK stays-this past year we have been to The New Forest, Winchester and Rye-really loving them so more on the cards for sure but we have a villa in France for 2 weeks this summer-driving over and all adult children/girlfriend plus my sister and her husband joining us.

JemimaMuddledUp · 05/03/2022 16:49

Having looked at a lot of market research data on this for work (Mintel etc) it appears that a significant proportion of people are planning a UK break this year rather than travelling abroad.

Personally though I'm hoping for at least one European city break.

Oncemoreforluck · 05/03/2022 17:00

2x4 nights stays booked at UK self catering cottages.

Eat out at pubs/ cafes during the day and self cater at night due to having two dogs with us.

BulletTrain · 05/03/2022 17:05

Not abroad. DS is 3 and I still can't face the hassle. Probably somewhere a bit further SW than we are (Dorset/Devon), New Forest, maybe Wales? My best friend is getting married so I have that plus a UK hen weekend to factor in.

BookkeeperBobby · 05/03/2022 17:19

Got two European trips booked and cannot wait.

I feel that I've supported the UK holiday industry enough via the covid grants my taxes paid for. Still couldn't afford anywhere here last year because they all hiked their prices massively anyway! Holidays in the UK mean expensive accommodation, expensive days/meals out and expensive unreliable transport. Looking forward to our European trips.

fussychica · 05/03/2022 17:21

Went to Pembrokeshire (wonderful) and a long break in Spain last year. This year loads planned, all abroad, all short haul. Fingers crossed they all happen.

gravyandbutter · 05/03/2022 17:24

5 days in Spain mainland, 3 weeks in USA, a week in Majorca and maybe tenerife for a week if finances stretch

RubyJam · 05/03/2022 17:27

All UK only breaks this year.

We usually used to go abroad twice a year but it’s too expensive now and we are watching our spending

And by UK breaks I mean under £300 for 4/5 nights etc not luxury.

Livebythecoast · 05/03/2022 17:27

Nothing planned this year. We're a bit boring actually! We're lucky to live 5/10minutes walk from a few beaches (touristy and secluded) on the South Kent Coast and we're homebodies so we're happy to have days out at the beach/harbour then return home. When our DD18 was young we went to Buckinghamshire to visit family and the first thing she said was 'How far is the beach?' - she thought everyone lived by the beach as she had grown up near one Smile.

Monpetitpoisson · 05/03/2022 17:28

Partner is only allowed 10 days off middle of August. With the rising costs we can’t even afford to go camping in August. So no holiday this year .

Enzbear · 05/03/2022 17:29

We have booked 3 holidays abroad and a couple of city breaks in the UK. In between we'll use our camper van.
