To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

Caravan holiday for a week on the south coast. We're skint atm so won't be eating out other than a takeaway.

We have a couple of holidays already booked and will probably also do a couple of long weekends . Mix of UK and abroad .

We normally book self catering for holidays of a week or longer and hotels for short breaks . Normally when in self catering we eat out once per day and have quick meals/snacks at the accommodation for the other meal. This is the same whether home or abroad.

Mostly just me/DH although DS and his GF may join us for one of the holidays .

I can understand many people will be impacted by their financial situations but I don't really get why people wouldn't book a holiday or choose to travel to Bournemouth/ Majorca due to what is happening in Ukraine . Obviously wouldn't travel to that area or if FCO advised not to travel.

Fortnight in Italy, walking holiday in England.

@Franklin12

Have a few abroad holidays booked. Wouldn’t really consider UK again. Went on a few weekend/few days break last summer. Rip off prices and weather not great (Cornwall and Yorkshire Dales).
God yes. Bloody Cornwall and Yorkshire. Never got the appeal of either! Don't get me started on the lake district. Staying in the UK is not a holiday for me!

We are planning:

Vienna (Easter)
Jersey (May)
Formentera (June)
Norway (August)
October (Brazil)[visiting family]
Dec/Jan (Brazil)[xmas break]

We will not be doing any UK trips this year as they are simply not good value for money. The prices being asked are completely detached from reality.

We found Cornwall (St Ives) completely overcrowded in August last year and for the £££ you pay simply not worth it. You end up paying thousands of £££ to essentially watch it rain from your over-priced accomodation.

Scotland in some areas outside the larger cities still has ok prices, but so much is dependent on the weather up there (we are in East Surrey), that we decided to just skip it this year (previously we had done a trip to Ft Augustus/Skye/Perth but we lucked out reasonably good sunny weather).

Norfolk coast in July plus weekend in Yorkshire booked. We enjoyed a fantastic week in the Norfolk Broads last summer but prices have definitely shot up. We paid £2800 for a week in July 2021 (booked 10 mths in advance), couldn't book at all for 2022 (fully booked over a year in advance). The same week for July 2023 is now available for £3800!

Held off booking a week abroad due to covid concerns (normally would have booked flights in the autumn). DC2's passport expires in Oct and I have just applied for its renewal so that we can have the option to book something at least (hopefully if it doesn't take months for it to be processed). Now with inflation and Ukraine, I suspect prices of flights will be rocketing so have probably missed the boat on reasonably priced budget flights. Central Europe will also be chaotic this year and will definitely impact holidays there this summer with the sheer volume of displaced people. Will hold off for another few weeks to see what happens in Ukraine.

Going to (ex)in-law's house in La Rochelle for May half term.

Booked a cottage in Woolacombe first week of summer holidays.

Having a child free week with DP in Lanzarote in August (timeshare)

Long weekend camping at Carfest end of august, which I'm calling a holiday even though it's a festival!
