To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

Going to my parents' holiday home in Eastern Europe for summer half term.

DH and I want to get away for our anniversary because, as luck would have it BOTH kids are on school residentials that week. Haven't decided where yet - might be UK if we only go away while oldest is away, but we're waiting to hear more details about trip.

Summer - trying to decide whether we resurrect our big 2020 US trip or do something else.

Curiosity101 · 05/03/2022 17:32

We've got a week in Disneyland Paris and two weeks in Orlando Florida planned. We'll potentially do a couple of weekends by the sea in the UK. I find holidays abroad are often comparable price to UK if not cheaper so none of the price rises factor into it for me, especially as holidays are a luxury so we can choose not to go if money is an issue. Overall I'd definitely still go abroad rather than stay in the UK.

Echobelly · 05/03/2022 17:32

Summer hols almost certainly abroad after 2 years in UK!

BobMortimersPetOwl · 05/03/2022 17:33

Going to the lakes for a week, Devon for a week and Northern Ireland for a week.

Not in a mad rush to travel abroad as I've really enjoyed exploring our own gorgeous country for the last couple of years.

70kid · 05/03/2022 17:35

I’ve just come back from the Canary Islands
I went in Oct for 2 weeks and just did another two weeks
Probably do two weeks again in either Aug or Sept
I do have a weekend in London planned as well in Aug
Wouldn’t bother with a uk holiday to expensive and weather is to unpredictable

Crunchymum · 05/03/2022 17:53

We are doing 10 days self catering in a cottage (English coastal resort)

Booked before we knew our fuel bills will be going up by a similar amount we are paying for our cottage Shock

We plan to self cater as much as possible (all breakfasts and lunches will be pack ups). We may have dinner out a few times but we'll aim for fish and chips beachside or somewhere we can do a sharing platter / have nibbles. There will be no restaurant meals for 6 of us.

This will probably be our last family holiday for the foreseeable as well, due to finances.

pradavilla · 05/03/2022 17:56

We are finally having a holiday abroad to Majorca in June for 10 nights AI. Last yr before eldest starts school and it will need to be school holidays.

Pre covid we always went abroad for our main family holiday and maybe 1 or 2 wkends away in the UK.

Scbchl · 05/03/2022 18:09

We are going abroad again (did last year also)but we will likely be going away somewhere for the weekend in the UK also which we did last year too.

Nogoodusername · 05/03/2022 18:15

We did UK holidays 2020 and 2021. Had fab weather 2020 and bloody awful weather 2021 so will be back to guaranteed sun this year

cptartapp · 05/03/2022 18:16

Just come back from a few days in Malaga. Will go camping (tradition) with family for a long weekend in July. Probably our last after ten years. Hoping to have a week in the sun in October and a winter city break between Xmas and New Year, have previously loved Iceland, Saville and Copenhagen at that time of year.
UK holidays don't excite me anymore now the DC are older I'm afraid. I realise how bad that sounds.

cptartapp · 05/03/2022 18:17

Also going to Halkidiki in August, booked two years ago!

tootiredtospeak · 05/03/2022 18:18

Scotland Wales and East Coast for us.

hellcatspangle · 05/03/2022 18:19

We will do both.

CMOTDibbler · 05/03/2022 18:22

We had originally planned a big long haul trip for this year. But as things still felt too uncertain to plan that, its two weeks on the North Norfolk coast this summer

BitterTits · 05/03/2022 18:22

We have a regular booking in a self-catering holiday rental in West Wales during May half term, and we've cancelled our French Canvas/Alfresco booking for the summer hols. It's just become extortionate for what is actually not a very relaxing holiday. There's not a chance of us paying thousands for a hotel holiday abroad so we've decided to just go to my brother's static on the Welsh coast for a week. Cost of living is shooting up too fast to consider pissing money away on a holiday right now.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 05/03/2022 18:24

3 nights in Spain
Week in Devon on the coast
2 weeks in France
City break to Amsterdam

1FootInTheRave · 05/03/2022 18:26

Northumberland at easter.
Turkey summer holidays.
Plus a few uk weekend breaks too.

I'd happily cancel the turkey one but dh and the kids like going abroad.

Zazdar · 05/03/2022 18:28

No change for us. We will be doing a mix of both. Luckily our Med holiday plans weren’t affected by covid in 2020 and 2021although our long haul plans were. Assuming WW3 doesn’t break out, we will be going to the Med again this year.

We also have a holiday home that we visit regularly and my husband does his best to keep the local pub in business. Apparently, we spend more in there in a year than most of the locals.

Georgyporky · 05/03/2022 18:36

We've spent a fortune on holidays in the UK during the last 2 years.
Hotels, restaurants, excursions etc are very expensive compared to other countries.

We're off soon for a 2-week tour abroad (4-5* hotels) that will cost less than last year's week in Devon.

We will not have anything other than a long weekend in UK this year.

MinnieMountain · 05/03/2022 18:42

The Lake District.
North Norfolk.
Switzerland as a change from Pembrokeshire.
DH is going surfing in Cornwall.
I’m going to Vienna.

bettertocryinamercedes · 05/03/2022 18:46

Long weekend at Loch Lomond, week to turkey or Cyprus in the summer

Next year France , renting a house with a pool

My dh doesn't fly so UK holidays we usually like a house with a hot tub or a really nice hotel.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/03/2022 18:48

French river cruise in May
Week in Rhodes in June
6 weeks on Florida's gulf coast from September

MinglingFlamingo · 05/03/2022 18:54

Our family holiday to France is one which was booked before covid. We rolled it over to 2021 from 2020 and then again to 2022. I intend to go currently as i renewed passport recently in preparation

Closer to home I live in a very touristy place so will make use of the cafes and stuff which are aimed at them.

Also have a motorhome so will use that a few times a well in the Uk

BeHappy91818 · 05/03/2022 18:59

Disneyworld/universal for 3 weeks in June.

Devon over Xmas in a log cabin with a hot tub.

Camping for a weekend in July

A night away in London in April to see a show.

Philandbill · 05/03/2022 18:59

UK with family but we very rarely eat out in the evening and are happy self catering and having picnic lunches. Would buy cakes and coffee out though. Hoping for a city break in Europe too but holding off booking that at present.
