To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

Camping in Jersey for 2 weeks in August. Have previously gone to Cornwall every year but it was so busy last year I'm hoping the extortionate ferry prices to Jersey mean a few less people. Even camping plus ferry is setting us back £1200 (family of 5, 14 nights).
We will be mostly eating picnics or making food at the campsite but will probably have basic meals out every other lunch time, chippy etc

Frenchfancy · 05/03/2022 09:52

We have spent the last 19 years running holiday accommodation. We were already making moves to get out of tourism but covid put the final nail in the coffin. We closed down at the end of August last year and now have jobs. We do not regret it one bit.

One plus side is that we can now go away on holiday so have 2 weeks booked in Crete in July.

ChuckMater · 05/03/2022 09:52

Over a week away we'll maybe eat out twice early evening with the kids but more likely to eat out at lunch time and that will be more frequently through the week

Hersetta427 · 05/03/2022 09:57

3 overseas holidays booked plus 2 trips to Spain to visit my Mum who has lived there for 15 yrs. I appreciate this is also overseas, but it's definitely not a holiday !

AChocolateOrangeaday · 05/03/2022 10:00

Florida in a Villa for 3 weeks in June, then another 3 weeks in October.

Caribbean for 10 days at Christmas

Already done Berlin and Poland so far this year.

Won't be going anywhere in this country, it's not a holiday for us.

HermioneWeasley · 05/03/2022 10:13

Holidayed in the Uk last 2 years, now desperate to get abroad and have 2 foreign holidays planned.

MajorCarolDanvers · 05/03/2022 10:14

I have 2 overseas holidays booked this year and one long weekend in the UK.

StCharlotte · 05/03/2022 10:16

We had a UK holiday last year but our three trips abroad this year have been booked (and rebooked and rebooked) and paid for since 2019 so cost not an issue.

McScreamysGhostPants · 05/03/2022 10:16

We've got a caravan booked for a long weekend in a U.K. seaside town. Then a week in Italy in June, two weeks in Corfu in July/august and I'm going away for a week on my own to Tunisia for a week in October/November.

deadlanguage · 05/03/2022 10:17

We’re going abroad in May but also have a long weekend booked in Dorset for August and will most likely book a U.K. camping trip for the summer as well. I keep looking at deals for the Canaries in the next few weeks as I’m burnt out and want to lay in the sun but can’t justify flying twice in a year.

Benjispruce5 · 05/03/2022 10:18

@AChocolateOrangeaday are you retired? Very long holiday entitlement otherwise. I’m in education so have long hols but expensive and busy times. DH only gets 4 weeks.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/03/2022 10:18

Mix of both. We are going to Menorca and also the Lake District.

Lulu1919 · 05/03/2022 10:20

One week self catering in Dartmouth

One week self catering in Peak District - followed by a couple nights in a hotel on the way back down south .

IsAnybodyListening · 05/03/2022 10:24

May-10 days in Spain
Aug-15 days in Spain

Last time I holidayed in the UK was about 10yrs ago when DC's were little. Went to Cornwall and it cost as much as going aboard, if not more. I still remember paying about £35 for fish and chips at lunch one day, and an ice cream from the van about £4 each.

In contrast we were in Greece before lockdown and a lunchtime Gyros, salad, fries and a soft drink was about 5 euros if that.

Buildingthefuture · 05/03/2022 10:25

A mix of both. Overseas trips tend to be longer (a week or more) due to the faff of getting there, but quite a few long weekends booked in the UK too. But we did the same before covid and during covid (and yes, we followed all the rules) and have no plans to change anything.

AChocolateOrangeaday · 05/03/2022 10:28

@Benjispruce5 Not retired, no but full time carer for our DS who has SLD.

I will take my pension in 3 years at 55 as will DH in 5 years. Both of us have been paying in the maximum we could from the age of 16 with this end in sight

DH's job has fantastic holiday entitlement so combine that with working round his shift patterns and taking unpaid leave, holidays are easily doable and a priority for our family.

BoredZelda · 05/03/2022 10:31

Is MN really a place for this kind of market research? Can’t think you’ll find much that’s useful to your own business.

MrsMigginsCat · 05/03/2022 10:33

We've got a camper van so have a few weekends away in the UK planned in that. Main holiday is 4 weeks in Oz in October as part of my 50th birthday celebrations.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/03/2022 10:36

Going to Scotland in a hired motorhome. The first weekend we will park up at SIL house as we're attending a family event before heading off to explore.

TheSpanishApartment · 05/03/2022 10:36

One week in the uk at May half term. Will eat out a few times but mainly self cater. Otherwise two weeks in Menorca in the summer and Iceland in December as am desperate for a ‘proper’ holiday after covid (and have quite a lot of savings in the holiday pot because of not being able to get away during covid).

Camomila · 05/03/2022 10:40

We usually go abroad and stay with relatives. We will probably do the same again this summer (tbh it tends to work out cheaper to go to Italy for 2 weeks than to go on holiday in the UK for one week like we did last year)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/03/2022 10:40

We'll go to Ireland as usual, and probably also France (inexpensive as staying at a friend's parents' second home). We'll do a few trips in the UK for one or two nights, mostly staying at Holiday Inn Expresses because that is what DS likes.

There is no point trying to do ambitious or exotic holidays with DS. He isn't interested in culture, doesn't like hot weather, and is always ready to go home after 2 nights.

HamCob · 05/03/2022 10:50

Uk this year - booked it last year due to the uncertainty at the time over Covid.

It will be our last uk summer holiday though. The prices of accommodation and eating out have increased so much over the past few years that it's just not good value anymore, especially when you factor in the rubbish weather.

I found an old booking from 2015 and the hot tub lodge we usually go to for a weekend at October half term has gone up from £350 to £850 post pandemic. Our wages haven't increased by the same % so it's completely unaffordable for us now

Rainbowx · 05/03/2022 10:52

No-where as have no money had to cancel iow trip and we shall try for a few days out in the summer.

worriedatthemoment · 05/03/2022 10:54

Have a AI holiday booked was one that was booked before covid and pushed on and on
Was planning some uk weekends as well but with al recent bills going up we won't be able to afford that
Most of our holiday had been paid for before and as its AI we won't need too much spending money
Myself and dh have both had payrises as well but these don't cover al the bills going up
