To ask what your holiday plans are this year

DH and I own a restaurant and accommodation in a touristy area in the UK. Obviously, the last few years have been a rollercoaster financially and emotionally and we're considering whether DH or I go back to a previous career to guarantee an income - this would involve some commuting and overnight stays so would be a big upheaval.

It's really hard to know what business will be like this year - I know lots of people will be desperate to get abroad for the first time in a few years, I now don't know what to expect with rising electricity and fuel costs and interest rate and rent rises not to mention the situation in the Ukraine. Our own costs are rising massively, all suppliers are raising their prices and minimum wage is going up by 6.6%. We're going to have to increase all our prices just to cover the increases.

So - does any of that change your holiday plans this year - whether you go abroad, holiday in the UK, a mix of both or don't go away at all?

Our usual week in Devon in July, festival weekend down south May, trip to Amsterdam in Aug and fortnight in florida in Oct.
Never normally away this much but my 40th this year 😊

Vampirethriller · 06/03/2022 09:13

North Wales self catering in September with my siblings, maybe Filey or Cleethorpes for a night in the summer.

FfsKaren · 06/03/2022 09:14

To add I think people will still holiday in UK I know lots of friends have really enjoyed their breaks in the UK and got used to travelling to certain places.

Newmumatlast · 06/03/2022 09:14

We never used to be UK holiday people but with everything that has gone on we haven't been abroad now since a bit before the pandemic and have no plans to resume any time soon. We now have a toddler with a baby on the way and just feel it is safer and more practical for us to stay in the UK but find activities and places suitable for them. We will likely look to seaside towns and countryside cottage locations with activities within drive able distance or holiday parks with kids entertainment.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 06/03/2022 09:17

Long weekend in Malaga next week.
Week in Canaries over Easter.
Two weeks in Spain in the summer.
Maybe something dog friendly in the UK in October if it's not too much of a rip off.

Not sure how anyone is being 'exploited' for cava & tapas, to previous poster.

dottiedodah · 06/03/2022 09:19

Well it's our 25th anniversary in June. Hoping to have a long weekend away .otherwise just days out here and there.will be cotswolds for us

Saracen · 06/03/2022 09:22

I hate crowds and peak rates, so if I see that other people are holidaying in the UK then I won't. Or I will wait until autumn/winter and go then.

But if everyone else zips off abroad, I will be keen on a more local holiday.

Delatron · 06/03/2022 09:27

Have a postponed holiday to Costa Rica over Easter. Supposed to go in 2020. Looks like little Covid faff to get there so I’m very pleased. Travel is becoming easier.

Weather normally too shit to enjoy just a U.K. holiday. You may get lucky and coincide your holiday with the 1 or 2 nice weeks a year we tend to get. Also v.expensive for what you get

Yorkshire in June. But I won’t mind about the weather as we’ll have had hot holiday.

France at the end of August. Driving there though.

bellamountain · 06/03/2022 09:28

I love a UK holiday, being able to leave the house with the car loaded up and not having to worry about missing a flight and the sense of freedom of being on the road, in your own car. My DH is more of an abroad person though so we are off to Greece this summer. Really looking forward to it but with two young kids, I'd actually prefer Norfolk again this year.

Notreallyhappy · 06/03/2022 09:28

The canaries in a month, two cypris trips and a Christmas somewhere warm.
It's more cost effective to go abroad than stay local.
During the pandemic it cost £700 for 3 days on the south coast....

supadupapupascupa · 06/03/2022 09:32

A week boating in the Thames, weekend break with family in Notts, week with family in Yorkshire. Nothing abroad.

SmellyWellyWoo · 06/03/2022 09:36

We can only afford one holiday a year and choose to go abroad or not at all. We have had holidays in this country but the unpredictability of the weather spoils it for us and the type of holidays we go on.

We also like all inclusive as we are a family of four which you can't find in this country.

Benjispruce5 · 06/03/2022 10:48

I don’t get the cheaper to go abroad thing. I suppose you’re all travelling out of school holidays. I’ve looked at Christmas abroad and it’s £££ as are school summer hols.

jessy100 · 06/03/2022 11:19

@Benjispruce5 We don't need to go away in school holidays. We have adult children. Remember lots of posters here dont need to go away in the school holidays for a whole variety of reasons. Yes prices are usually cheaper. but that's supply and demand, but that's the case in the UK as well.

zafferana · 06/03/2022 11:24

It's true that Christmas abroad is £££, but you can get packages with free DC places to loads of sunny destinations year-round that are much cheaper than the equivalent in the UK. Eating out is much cheaper in Spain, Greece, Turkey, etc than it is at home and I was stunned by how cheap museums were in Spain in Feb half term. They were free after 4pm on Sun, when I managed to visit two, then the city museum, which was huge, modern and full of really well-thought out, informative exhibits, with an English translation of everything, was €1.50 - I couldn't believe it! And I pretty much had the place to myself. The equivalent museums in the UK would've been at least £12 each and probably more. DH also hit the same attractions and it cost us the princely sum of €3 total.
Benjispruce5 · 06/03/2022 11:29

I have adult children too, just. They’re 18 and 21. I work in education though so no choice. Museums in London are still free aren’t they? Thanks to Tony Blair I believe. Or has that changed?

zafferana · 06/03/2022 11:36

www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/sightseeing/london-attraction/museum/free-museums-in-london

Yes, quite a few museums are free in London, but we live near London, so it's not somewhere we'd go on holiday. We had a holiday in the UK in 2020 and spent a fortune on days out and on disappointing food. Give me tapas and a glass of cava any day!

Sodullincomparison · 06/03/2022 11:39

Abroad, abroad and abroad.

After years of cancelled holidays we are are aiming for 2 week long breaks and two shorts breaks in Europe.

We bought a touring caravan during lockdown and have now sold it and are excited to explore new and favourite places again.

eightlivesdown · 06/03/2022 11:48

Both overseas and UK trips this year. UK holiday accommodation can be expensive for what it is, and you take a risk on poor weather so I understand why people who want guaranteed sunshine go overseas.

jessy100 · 06/03/2022 12:39

@Benjispruce5. ah, so you're tied to school holidays then! Funnily enough, I have been job hunting recently, and was supposed to go for an interview tomorrow for a TA job. It was more for the experience of the interview really, as I had already decided that on the small chance of being offered the job, I wouldn't take it.

Having been free of having to go away in School holidays for a few years now, I just couldn't go back to being tied to them.again. Cancelled the interview now, as I have had a job offer (not in education)

MrsBerthaRochester · 06/03/2022 12:50

We only holiday in the uk as none of us has passports. Last year we went back to the town Im from to see my family. Wont be doing that again.
Usually go with a friend to a caravan but she has other plans so Im thinking of taking kids on a city break weekend. Probably wont be able to afford to though.

Delatron · 06/03/2022 13:19

You can spend thousands on a U.K. holiday. Then it rains and you’re traipsing around trying to find something to do.

Much prefer some warmth and guaranteed sunshine if I’m going to spend ££.

I8toys · 06/03/2022 13:25

Just been to Gibraltar for Feb Half Term - everything cheaper than the UK
Malta for Easter
Was going to go to Edinburgh Fringe as we go every year. However the cost of the hotel for a few nights has gone to over £1,000 instead of the normal £400. I refuse to pay it which is a shame because we have been every year bar 2020 since the kids were young.
Therefore will probably go to Bratislava/Prague/Budapest due to the cost of a UK break I'd rather go abroad.
Naples October

If UK breaks were reasonable we would go away in this country but everything is so expensive so its European breaks.

Franklin12 · 06/03/2022 13:30

Have a few abroad holidays booked. Wouldn’t really consider UK again. Went on a few weekend/few days break last summer. Rip off prices and weather not great (Cornwall and Yorkshire Dales).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/03/2022 13:42

We always have a week in the UK anyway and are doing that again but in the Summer instead of at Whit.

We have a couple of weekends away, visiting DD at uni and a seaside town in May.

I'm going to Menorca with work friends for a few nights at Easter as that was booked for 2 years ago originally. But I haven't brought myself to book an abroad week away for the DC and I as I tend to book early and save up over a long time and I haven't felt that things were settled enough twith covid (or paperwork fuss-free) yet so have held off.
