I have 20 but I know people who have 80. How many house plants do you have and AIBU to say that having house plants is good for mental health and wellbeing?

I don't like them.
1Micem0use · 05/03/2022 07:19

13 and I felt that was a generous amount until reading this thread! I also have cheap fresh flowers a lot, like daffodils and carnations. So maybe that makes the place seem more green than it is

Stuffin · 05/03/2022 07:20

just not great at keeping them alive

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/03/2022 07:21

Zero.

@GeneLovesJezebel

8. I’ve got a peace lily that has gone yellow, don’t know what to do with it. I’ve tried watering it well, keeping it drier, in the sun, in the shade. Just can’t seem to get it back to what it was. Should I Chuck it ?
They don’t like direct sunlight, too much light can cause yellow leaves, they also need well draining soil (so maybe change the substrate) and they’re quite sensitive to the chlorine in tapwater, so if you can use rain water.
GeneLovesJezebel · 05/03/2022 07:25

Siminjt - thanks, I’ll try that.

Gatekeeper · 05/03/2022 07:29

25, I love the look of them dotted about

AuntieMarys · 05/03/2022 07:32

None. I don't like indoor plants.
I do have fresh flowers in every room though and a garden ( hopefully) blooming soon

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 05/03/2022 07:34

Oh thanks for the rain water tip. We have quite hard water and I've tried everything with the leave lily but it doesnt look healthy.
It was sent to dh but I'm now constantly trying to keep alive Hmm
I have 12 houseplants although a couple are dc cacti and 1 succulent.

Polyanthus2 · 05/03/2022 07:36

Could you post some photos @sevencontinents

Notdoingthis · 05/03/2022 07:38

100s and I hate it. We have 2 bathrooms with about 8 plants in each, our bedroom has about 8. The kids' have a couple each. All over the lounge, dining room and kitchen. My husband is obsessed.
If it were up to me I would have clear surfaces I could dust easily, space. No more living/dying things all over the place. He also has artwork everywhere. I prefer space, light, blankness. I am tidy and a minimalist, but I live amongst clutter.

MacraMee · 05/03/2022 07:54
  1. Yes I do find looking after them good for my mental health. I love gardening so my houseplants get me through the winter months. Every Saturday morning they all get a shower and I like to potter around misting them and moving them around the house for optimum light. My username comes from my obsession with making plant hangers, its very therapeutic.
risefromyourgrave · 05/03/2022 08:04

I’ve got well over 100, including a large collection of calatheas, I bloody love them.
My DD has probably got over 50 in her room, mainly cacti and succulents, which I’m not keen on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/03/2022 08:40

Three massive ones, more like trees, that I’ve had for many years, and 3 ‘standard’ small ones.

My monstera, aka Swiss cheese plant, regularly tries to grow through the ceiling, so every 3 years or so I take 3 or four huge ‘cuttings’ of at least 3 or 4 feet each, with their aerial roots, and leave them in a bucket of water while I chisel the root-crammed compost out of the pot and fill with fresh.

It started as a small house plant from Woolworths IIRC, over 30 years ago.

Only once has just one cutting failed to ‘take’ but the others soon made up for it.

Floydthebarber · 05/03/2022 08:46

More than 20. I'I've propagated some more string of hearts and pileas so I have a never ending supply of those! I love them. Taking time to water them, repot them, select the best spots, get a red emerald philodendron from a butterfly farm who pot up cuttings when they have to prune back theirs (perhaps to excited about that one!)

CheshireDing · 05/03/2022 08:55

I just counted up ours, it was 31, the children have lots on their windowsills

I find the easiest are the succulents and aloe Vera, they can be ignored for weeks and still grow and look fab. The aloe Vera keeps growing pups and it’s certainly not because of my green fingers !

drinkingwineoutofamug · 05/03/2022 09:04

Got 5.
All named , but haven't a clue their proper names . I know 1 is an aloe Vera - Vera . Then a fern thing, a funny looking bonsai thing called manny as it looks like a mandrake.
A plant that has funny looking red flowers. And a pineapple plant which my friend is plant sitting, awaiting collection.
It's only recent I've started with house plants. Waiting a cutting for a parrot plant off my dad

MrsClatterbuck · 05/03/2022 09:10

None as I gave up years ago trying to keep them alive. Had a lovely Christmas cactus which flowered at Easter but even it gave up the ghost.

Mxflamingnoravera · 05/03/2022 09:11

2, orchids. I kill houseplants.

CurlyTop1980 · 05/03/2022 09:14

No! Repot it. With fresh soil and some fertiliser. They only need watering every 3-4 days. You can also split it into 2 plants. No need to buy new peace lilys

sevencontinents · 05/03/2022 09:22

To those who have loads of plants, how do you keep them looked after when you go on holiday?!

OP posts:
NinjaQueen · 05/03/2022 09:23

I have two spider plants and a fern thing. I'm not the best at looking after them sadly!

DangerousMouse · 05/03/2022 09:35

3/400 may seem a lot but I have 4 cabinets and a humidity tent, they are mostly in there. I have a small business selling rare plants, the most I've sold one for is £1200.. nice little earners as they grow back and can sell more cuttings! Money grows on plants...
I don't have any soil in my house and it's quite minimalistic, they are all tucked up together apart from the 10 or so I have out around the house

Quamora · 05/03/2022 10:08

About 14 at the moment. Not sure what happened but a load suddenly died at once. My monstera was beautiful then suddenly all the leaves went brown overnight. There was no gradual death or warning signs.
At the moment my orchids are doing well, aloe Veras are multiplying, snake plant is healthy (but it’s new) and my Areca palm is looking good (though with a few brown tips). My citrus have lost all their leaves and I think they’re dead, my parlour palm is struggling and my calathea which has done wonderfully for over two years is starting to look sad. I might try repotting it to see if that helps.

ShinyMe · 05/03/2022 10:08

I have between 70 and 80 in total, but some of them are very small propagations. Plus I'm always giving away props so it may be a bit more or a bit less. And I have another 15 or so in my office at work.
