I have 20 but I know people who have 80. How many house plants do you have and AIBU to say that having house plants is good for mental health and wellbeing?

11 in my downstairs loo, and on that basis I don’t want to count the rest … 🤣

MaizeAmaze · 04/03/2022 22:25

Not enough. But I got funny looks when I asked for plants in nice pots for Xmas, and got none. So I bought myself a late xmas present of a terranium.....
Need to buy myself a late valentine's present now!!!

Abaababa · 04/03/2022 22:25

I'd love more though!!

Which plants are hardest to kill and like shade?

Monstera likes shade. The non-variegated philodendron would too, and tradescantia is ok in moderate shade and (IME) it is quite robust).

If you don't mind the 70s vibe, spider plants are hardy, too.

Basically the darker green the leaf, the more likely it is it will like shade.

DH has an Apple tree he is growing from a pip, does that count, I had a poinsettia at Christmas but that died, I do have some droopy daffs that need to go in the garden waste tomorrow, Plants don't do very well with me

Peccary · 04/03/2022 22:28

About 25, had none before covid, I'm a recent plant parent

scrivette · 04/03/2022 22:29

13, DH has about 10 in his office at the bottom of the garden, including a poinsettia from Christmas, mine died after about a month but his is still going strong.

Needhelp101 · 04/03/2022 22:30

Loads. Even more soon as I'm proprogating Jonathan the Monstera and loads of succulents, snake plants and mother of thousands.
I have a garden but love my houseplants more.

Has anyone got something really unusual? Thinking of trying my hand with carnivorous plants...

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/03/2022 22:30

Hmm I think I now have one orchid as was trying to do something with the one remaining part of one of my orchids that was budding again but managed to twist it and now it's hanging off Confused

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 04/03/2022 22:31

About 40. I love them and love looking after them. I'm going to be repotting some this weekend and planting up some babies I've been propagating in water. Really looking forward to it

Needhelp101 · 04/03/2022 22:32

April the Avocado 🥑, lovingly grown from a seed.

sammylady37 · 04/03/2022 22:33

None

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/03/2022 22:33

3

Massive parlour palm
Small snake plant
Medium orchid that needs repotting because she’s trying to escape her pot

TrobadoraBeatrice · 04/03/2022 22:33

50 or so (probably half of which are orchids collected over a decade or so), more if you include DP's chilli plants which are overwintering in the kitchen. 4 in my office at work, I'm hoping to restock a bit now I'm working there more often and can take care of them.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/03/2022 22:33

Oh no, 4 just remembered the weird one DH bought me that lives in the kitchen

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/03/2022 22:34

3, enormous though, 4-6 ft. Brought two potted fatsias inside and they’re thriving, more new little leaves now than ever before.

BakedTattie · 04/03/2022 22:35

Fecking hunners

I keep them alive by neglecting them

Yoyokitten · 04/03/2022 22:38

About 12 and I love every one of them. I rescued a half dead money tree plant from poundland. They were on a trolley full of dead plants. It's massive now, I like rescuing them

GroggyLegs · 04/03/2022 22:40

4 - two peace lilles, a dragon plant and a random cyclamen.

On if my peace lilies is my obvious favourite. It nearly died at my hands, but now it's glossy & green, I feel genuine affection for it.

I wish I felt the same about my big expensive dragon plant. It looks sad & spindly.

antwacky · 04/03/2022 22:41

Between 50 & 60 I reckon, I've just counted 26 in my bedroom. Unfortunately my bathroom and downstairs loo don't have windows, I could have loads more if they did.

Needhelp101 · 04/03/2022 22:42

House plants thrive on neglect 😁

I give you this succulent, which lives in the tiniest (undrained) bowl of dirt, is watered once every century and is now flowering nicely

Home:

An infestation of Spider Plants
Aloe Veras
Echiveras
Pickle plant (called Rick, naturally)
A herd of Haworthia Zebras
Crassulas
Avocadoes
Monstera
Yucca
Rubber Plant
Snake Plant
Dracaena
Calathea
Alocasia
Pothos
Ivy
Areca Palm
Parlour Palm
Tradescantia
Assorted bulbs - narcissi, iris, etc.

At work, I've got

Large snake plant
Anthurium
Lucky bamboo
Assorted abandoned orchids

I'm thinking of getting some more this weekend. We're lacking larger items mainly because the little fuckers won't stop multiplying and I quite fancy an aspidistra.

PotteryLady · 04/03/2022 22:47

About 40 I love them 😍

youdoyoutoday · 04/03/2022 22:47

2, I grew 3 avocado seeds and 2 are in 1 pot. No room for more at the moment.

MrsDeadpool · 04/03/2022 22:47

DH has a little collection of about 10 cacti and succulents, and one bigger thing I bought him as a tiny housewarming present from IKEA and is now a shiny-leaved monster. They all live in his office except for a couple which I have noticed recently colonising the spare room.

I’m not keen on houseplants so they have to stay out of my office, our bedroom and downstairs.

He gets lots of exercise carting them up and down to and from the utility room on watering day.
