Come tell me I’m an awful mum

Pancake day obviously

I always dread it. I’m a fairly ok cook but there are two things I can’t do, fry anything or mash anything. I burn fried stuff or undercook it and I can never get none lumpy mash.

I had ago at making pancakes for DD and I.

Whatever I did it didn’t work as it came out lumpy and uncooked in the middle.

DD (aged 7) is now crying saying all her friends at school will be having pancakes and it’s not fair – she’s right, from FB I can see at least 20 of the 26 in her class have had pancakes today. She’s stomped off to her room after telling me she hates me.

Just me and her at home so no-one else to have another attempt. I’ve used all my milk, flour and eggs trying to make them, I had several attempts.

Why am I so useless? Tell me I’m an awful mother and she’s never going to forgive me.

DD doesn't like the ready made pancakes (finds them salty) and last year I had one of those ready made batters and it still went wrong!

Just another excuse for supermarkets to extract money from us. Don’t feel bad. I can’t remember having them as a child and I survived.

MatildaTheCat · 01/03/2022 18:14

The pan needs to be really hot. Usually if you make a batch they get better. Have you followed a YouTube vid? You sound self defeatist; you can do this, just haven’t got it right yet.

Birdkin · 01/03/2022 18:15

You’re not an awful mother! Can you get some of the premade supermarket ones for tomorrow for bonus pancake day.

Doubleglouceater · 01/03/2022 18:16

Yes, heat the oil for a few minutes first. Constantly slip a spatula around the edges whilst you are cooking. Recipe from bbc good food website. I have struggled many times but those are my top tips for good ones.

@MatildaTheCat It was really hot, had it on the top setting on the hob and I could see steam coming off the oil. It's the same with eggs, I can't fry them either, or make an omelette.

My mums so good at stuff like that and has tried to show me so many times, I just don't know why I keep getting it wrong.

Parenting isn't based on your pancake making ability!
I understand she's feeling disappointed but it's not the end of the world. Especially since she doesn't like ready made ones. That would be an easy fix.

ComDummings · 01/03/2022 18:17

I don’t even do pancake day because it’s a faff. Just tell your DD to get over it, you gave it a go and sometimes things don’t turn out as planned.

Brefugee · 01/03/2022 18:18

why didn't you just buy ready made ones?

Olinguita · 01/03/2022 18:18

To be honest my mum was never a fantastic cook when we were growing up and this sounds like something she would have done. But to me she was and is super mum. They are just pancakes and your daughter will get over it.

Pohtaytoes · 01/03/2022 18:19

You not an awful mum!

I can't proper pancakes either. Only the american style ones, and even those I usually mess up the first two batches. Pre-bought ones all the way for me.

Geepee71 · 01/03/2022 18:19

I'm rubbish at pancakes, so I buy pre-made ones and loads of toppings!

Gowithme · 01/03/2022 18:20

Have you got them too thick for them to not be cooked in the middle?

attnsppent · 01/03/2022 18:20

I was raised Catholic and never did pancake day (like didn't know it was a thing at all), I survived! She'll forget about it by the end of the week. And have something to tease you about when she's an adult Grin

Bytrgrewd · 01/03/2022 18:20

Blame your frying pan!

Greydogs123 · 01/03/2022 18:20

You need a decent non-stick pan so that it is easy to lift up an edge to see if it’s brown underneath.
My go-to recipe is super easy to remember and seems to produce a good pancake. One egg, one cup of flour and one cup of milk. Beat together very well - you don’t want any floury lumps. Pour into the hot pan and tip slightly to spread it out a litttle. As soon as it’s no longer runny on top, turn it over. Ultimately, it’s just practice and try not to worry so much! It’s only pancakes after all.

sweatervest · 01/03/2022 18:20

i'm sure mc donalds do pancakes all day on pancake day.
i cooked them once when my kids were small and that's only becuase jamie oliver did them and it wasn't even pancake day. maverick that i am

@Brefugee

why didn't you just buy ready made ones?
It says right there in the OP that her daughter doesn't like ready made ones.
TheProvincialLady · 01/03/2022 18:21

Your daughter has behaved really badly. Saying “I hate you” for some failed pancakes is just horrible. I wouldn’t bother trying to make any more this year if that’s her attitude.

FanSpamTastic · 01/03/2022 18:21

I used to buy the ones in a pack that you could warm up! It's all about the toppings!!!

user375432 · 01/03/2022 18:22

What about ordering one of those pancake dessert things from Ubereats/Justeat?

LolaButt · 01/03/2022 18:22

What type are you making? Thin or thick American type ones?

Personally, I get the pan really hot, splash of oil and then turn the heat down.

TheGoogleMum · 01/03/2022 18:23

Try the chocolate crepes from the shop she might like those! I know she said she didn't like pre made but those ones aren't salty. I'm not good at pancakes but luckily DH is :)

junglejane66 · 01/03/2022 18:24

My DH makes a great pancake but he just cant flip them at all, he really is a useless tosser

Stompythedinosaur · 01/03/2022 18:24

I'd have eaten the lumpy pancakes tbh, they would still taste the same.

Clearly pancake making skill is not the most important aspect of parenting!

Tomorrow is another day.

mrsbitaly · 01/03/2022 18:24

Not useless at all but I do buy the ready made ones that you can pop in the pan to warm up as a back up
