What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

Goodness - Putin doesn't see us giving Ukraine anti tank and anti aircraft weapons as aggression but a comment from Liz Truss raises the stakes? He was looking for a reason to threaten the UK as we've been at the forefront of sanctions.

FOJN · 28/02/2022 14:26

Being a woman has nothing to do with it, if a man said those things they would still be thoughtless and reckless.

Really? You think threatening a nuclear war is a considered and proportionate response to comments made by another country's Foreign Secretary?

The issue here is a paranoid and unpredictable despot. We simply have no way of knowing what he might perceive as provocation. Should the rest of the world watch in mute horror whilst he invades and occupies a sovereign nation?

He does not give a single fuck about what LT said, it's an excuse but it appears his claims have successfully persuaded some posters here that the end of the world will be the result of a few words from a UK government minister. TR

Perhaps posters who are keen to blame Liz Truss for the actions of Putin should consider whether they are happy being used by the Russian propaganda machine.

DrManhattan · 28/02/2022 14:28

@FOJN
Of course nuclear annihilation is a massive over reaction. The point I was making is that he would latch on to anything that was said regardless of it is was a man or a woman who said it. What she said was insane (gender doesn't come into it)

CallyfromBlakes7 · 28/02/2022 14:30

The way the Times has reported this is the irresponsible thing.

It wasn't just her, the Russian specifically refer to Nato leaders at different levels. Not just Liz Truss. Euractiv is reporting Denmark has made the same sort of statements.

Mind you, I liked this tweet:

Johnson: I got Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe an extended prison sentence.

Raab: I stayed on holiday and went paddle boarding during an international crisis.

Truss: Hold my pint you fucking amateurs........

tkwal · 28/02/2022 14:31

I Liked Liz Truss in education , however she is WAY out of her depth as foreign secretary. Either she needs to resign or Boris needs to replace her with someone who understands diplomacy

CallyfromBlakes7 · 28/02/2022 14:31

And this:

Liz Truss is quite possibly the second worst foreign secretary of all time - her boss wins this award hands-down - but it is total bollocks for the gangsters in the Kremlin to claim its her words that precipitated their nuclear escalation

whoareyouthenwhatisyourgame · 28/02/2022 14:32

Meanwhile there are reports that peace talks may have ended already just checked this on world news and it does not feature - where are you getting your info from @Keepyourheadscrewedon?

LondonJax · 28/02/2022 14:34

And how do you suggest we do softly softly with Putin @Bunnyfuller? Let him have a few miles of Ukraine? How many - 20 miles, 50miles? What is enough to placate Putin in your view? What do we ask the Ukrainians to give up? Because he won't back down until he gets his way and his way appears to be Ukraine.

Putin himself said he put the nukes on red alert because of aggressive talk AND 'illegal' sanctions. Only the idiot spokesman mentioned Liz Truss - a very convenient slip of the tongue - " I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary.”

Putin says the sanctions are illegal and, in answer (and rightly in my view) the EU say 'don't like the sanctions? Oh dear, here's some more' and impose a no fly zone over the EU, sanction Belarus and start taking oligarchs 2nd (3rd or 4th) homes. Meanwhile we get all wringy hands and start saying Liz Truss (who I don't like by the way and she was wrong to encourage untrained people to 'help' by going to Ukraine) needs to apologise to this mad man because he's upset? I think he may also have a problem with the EU. Best way to deal with his tantrum is shove a few more sanctions on him. Seems to be working.

CallyfromBlakes7 · 28/02/2022 14:35

Londonjax, couldn't agree more.

Even in education her analysis of early years education in the UK vs other european countries was very poor - making no links to the extensive subsidised costs of early years care in other countries and better qualified staff

Appreciating these posts, tg
ComDummings · 28/02/2022 14:39

She should be sacked

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 28/02/2022 14:39

The fact that these comments are being appropriated by the Russian propaganda machine is EXACTLY why it was so stupid of her to make them.

She is way out of her depth.

FOJN · 28/02/2022 14:40

And you've made the point I was making. What she said is irrelevant, "he would latch on to anything that was said. Our choices are to speak up and have him manipulate anything and everything as an excuse for his frankly deranged behaviour or to shut up and allow him to invade wherever he likes. There is no poking the bear, the bear was never asleep, he was only resting his eyes while he waited for an opportune moment.

LondonJax · 28/02/2022 14:42

The point with Putin is that he will threaten nukes if he doesn't get Ukraine. Then he threaten nukes if he doesn't get Poland. Then if he doesn't get France or the UK or whoever.

The man will put the nukes on red alert if he gets a boiled egg instead of a poached one for breakfast. He will find an excuse if he thinks it will get him what he wants because he is insane, childish and doesn't care a fig for anyone. Placating him won't work as he'll see that as a sign of weakness - like a bully always does.

I'm not saying take the fight to him. But sanctions seem to be irritating him more than I thought they would - so they need to get tighter until he can't breathe or move anymore.

You're one of the few who did, then. Many of us thought she was a disastrous Early Years minister. She was certainly out of her depth, then.

Liz Truss doesn't think, she reacts in any way she believes will be advantageous to her career.

This. None of it is playing out as he expected, so he's becoming more and more like a toddler having a tantrum.
veevee04 · 28/02/2022 14:51

As if Putin gives a shiny shit what Liz Truss says he already has his mind made up. Stop pandering to him you are giving him what he wants.

CallMeDaddy58 · 28/02/2022 14:51

@FourTeaFallOut

As fucking if Putin gives a rat's ass about a handful of Brits who ignore the legalities around fighting against a country we are not at war with...like that's the fucking tipping point. Hang on, the whole of the world is slowly isolating us, stopping our flights, tanking the currency, arming the Ukraine to the teeth with weaponry...but three lads from Hull have donned a back pack and are making their way to fight...now we're really angry.
This this this!!

Honestly in the UK we can have such a “the world revolves around us” complex. If Putin is preparing his nukes it has to be aaaallll about us and not the rest of the world, much of which has placed much stricter sanctions on Russia and made a lot more aggressive statements than Liz fucking Truss.

Thank God the world isn’t full of the PPs saying she should apologise Shock We’d all have been speaking German since the 40s if it was. Have a back bone.

crowsfeet57 · 28/02/2022 14:53

She should retract her statement and apologise to him

Don't be ridiculous. You can't appease these people. What's next? He'll invade Poland unless Boris combs his hair?

The old Soviet Union mocked Margaret Thatcher and called her the Iron Lady, because they were intimidated by her. Personally I think Liz Truss should consider it a compliment that they are calling her names.

Bunnyfuller · 28/02/2022 14:58

Well, stalling him, Ukraine stalling him, everyone saying time out. Of course not give him Ukraine. Going softly doesn’t mean give in. It means keep fighting but a bit less overtly!

This isn’t a pissing fight, and if we act as defiant as he is then there’s only one way for it to go. What’s wrong with a neutral Ukraine? Never did Switzerland any harm?

I definitely do not want us to capitulate, but I also do not want this war to catch alight any more, calm heads are needed. My in laws live in Georgia, we know all too well what it is like to have the Russians attack (the west weren’t bothered about that one though, didn’t even report most of it) but this fire needs cooling and using inflammatory language in this situation is not only counterproductive but rather arrogant. Everyone seems to be assuming he is only threatening. I think people are underestimating how wronged (wrongly so!) he feels.

He was never going to stop, ossetia and other areas of the caucuses, Crimea, now this. Now we have to be a bit cleverer than just blowing the fire like Trump would.

Ncwinc · 28/02/2022 15:00

Does anyone seriously think that what Liz Truss says has the slightest impact on Putin? No one cares what Liz Truss says on anything.

Apologise… unbelievable, I agree with you Crows

And what LondonJax said

whoareyouthenwhatisyourgame · 28/02/2022 15:03

@Muminabun

You are right op. When a man acts like a Violent bully that silly woman needs to shut her mouth and stop winding him up and realise that she is making him worse by standing up to him. 🙄 the met police just called they want their views on female domestic violence victims back op.
Comparing criticising a woman for her actions in a high profile sensitive professional role to how the police view DV is irresponsible and offensive.

If a woman doesn't have the right skills to do a job, she shouldn't carry on in the role unsupervised just because she is a woman.

oncemoreunto · 28/02/2022 15:03

What’s wrong with a neutral Ukraine?

There is nothing wrong with a neutral Ukraine if that is what the citizens of the country want.
But it isn't up to other countries to choose what stance the Ukrainian's should have.
Their democratically elected leader is objecting to being invaded, currently it doesn't appear Ukrainian's wish to be neutral.
