What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

But Truss is a fool for giving him 'an excuse' to ramp things as intented

He would have found something else if not that to twist around. The man is a master of manipulation.

Agreed! @Keepyourheadscrewedon Putin is out of control atm. I hope one of his own side brings him down.

Meantime tho: why provide foolish 'soundbites' that he can twist?
Let another country put a daft minister up for mockery, not us.
It hardly increases our international credibility does it?

Bunnyfuller · 28/02/2022 13:44

I just don’t think there’s any need to poke the bear. Especially not this unpredictable and deranged one.

Yes, blah blah we will stand up to him. RN it’s about allow him to step down thinking he has won, not being publicly defiant. If the rhetoric doesn’t stop then he will keep going, he has the bit between his teeth and he’s not rational.

Or you can say ‘we won’t give in’ from your graves. Yes, we don’t allow bullying, but ffs think long game, get away from this current crisis situation and then take him down when he thinks he has won. He can’t head in anywhere else at the moment, just bring this bit to a halt.

I don’t give a fuck whether the FM is female or male or anything else. That was a fucking puerile thing to say, and apart from it feeding Putin’s fire of paranoia and sense of injustice, it is just so bloody amateur.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 13:44

Next week Putin will threaten nuclear Strikes because Liz Truss had Coco pops for breakfast instead of Frosties.

This thread is actually insane.

I thought her comments were later than the Kremlin announcement re the nuclear deterrent?

@RishiRich

YABU. First rule of misogyny: women are to blame for the actions of abusive men.
I am a radical feminist, so I will defend women until I'm blue in the face but not on this occasion. It's infantalising her to say that her words don't carry any consequences in this scenario.
Alltheprettyseahorses · 28/02/2022 13:47

People WANT to believe it's all Truss's/the Tories' fault so much they will gleefully jump on a crackpot divisive comment like good little puppets obeying Putin. No more paying for psy-ops to nudge people's thinking, say something that vaguely accords with their tribal prejudices and they'll fall over themselves to do it for you. Critical thinking has flown out the window. Is Truss the only woman who's gone to speak to the Russian government over Ukraine aggression, btw?

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 13:47

Her comments were on Sunday morning - I was watching the interview. I was surprised she mentioned it, but it was not a rallying call for every person to down tools and travel to Ukraine! She was simply saying if people want to go, and many will from Ukraine especially - they won't be stopped. It was not a declaration of war.

Most of us know that British people are already there (well at least the well informed amongst us) and this NOTHING new!!!

Alisae · 28/02/2022 13:47

I thought this too. Pretty sure I’d already watched his little public hissy fit before Truss had even said anything.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 28/02/2022 13:47

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

He is trying to control language He is trying to control narratives He is trying to control expression

He is reminding every one one wrong word and you are fucking ash.

And people on here seem to be actually blaming Truss for this insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We live in a democracy folks, can I please remind you we are not in Russia. If your FM says people can go and support the war effort, then that is up to her, it is outrageous that he should be threatening a nuclear war for such a benign comment.

Well put. Jeeze some peoples responses to it makes me realise how Hitler got away with everything he did.
RishiRich · 28/02/2022 13:48

Liz Truss could moon Putin live on the BBC and I wouldn't care. Last time I looked, we lived in a democracy where our ministers don't have to check in with Putin before they speak. Why the hell should she moderate what she says to keep that maniac happy? Treading on eggshells x 1000.

Putin is to blame for the nuclear threats. No one else 'made' him do it. This isn't infant school.

Exactly

I think you might find that the rest of the NATO countries would beg to differ, and Putin knows it Confused

MelCat · 28/02/2022 13:52

Denmark’s PM has said nationals can go and fight in Ukraine.

Canada also has allowed nationals to fight.

Lativa has rushed through legal amendments so nationals can fight if they want.

The EU for the first time is funding and providing lethal weapons to a nation.

Germany has for the first time agreed to allow lethal weapons to be transported through their country.

But yes, Liz Truss is the issue here. I don’t like the women, but come on?? I think some people on MN’s hatred of the Conservative party blinds them at times.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 13:52

And why did it take them a full 24 hours to give a reason for their high alert nuclear strike? Why not announce at the time 'In response to the FM in the UK we are now putting Russia on high alert'

This is all bullshit and I am amazed so many are falling for it!!

MsTSwift · 28/02/2022 13:53

Agree! Didn’t one of the Mitford sisters and George Orwell go to Spain to fight on the side of the good? Seemed such a brave and dashing thing to do to put yourself in the line for others that said would flip if my child wanted to!

DrManhattan · 28/02/2022 13:53

That's right - after the earlier morning comment re the nuclear deterrent
RobotValkyrie · 28/02/2022 13:54

Putin is a bully. Truss is an idiot.
The two don't mix well.
Bullies love dealing with idiots because they provide bullies with constant excuses to escalate their bullying.

Truss is a liability. You need clever people to effectively face bullies. The current saber-rattling shower of twats at the head of the UK put us all at risk because they keep talking shit and expects other nations to pay no notice, but the game has changed, and they're too thick to learn.
It's one thing to disrespect (as in, vomit bile all over) the EU, and another one altogether to provoke Russia. A change of tone would be welcome...

Agree. The internet and social media is awash with misinformation. We all need to be very circumspect about sources but esp if the suggestion as in this case is from the Kremlin (even if them reported by bbc)

It also provides reasonable deniability for any special forces or spies we might want to send to assist.

I don't think we should appease Putin to try and save ourselves from any risk however it slight.
Our European allies should be able to expect better from us. History teaches us it doesn't work as a strategy.

This. Some of the comments on this thread are nuts particularly the idea she should apologise to him?! I can't stand the Tories and I desperately wish we had someone more competent in charge but jeeeez talk about cowardice and naivety from the general public...
OvaHere · 28/02/2022 14:00

To the posters here saying Truss should be replaced for these remarks, isn't that what the Kremlin are hoping to achieve by singling her out?

Why would they want Truss gone? Who would they hope replace her?

I agree that dislike of the Tories domestically is influencing the blaming of Truss for this.

Putin's behaviour is entirely on him.

TorringtonDean · 28/02/2022 14:01

Liz Truss is a strong woman and extremely highly educated. Since she has become Foreign Secretary a succession of inadequate men have tried to put her down. This is actually an indication of her strength. She knows her game.

Putin is a megalomaniac bully. To issue nuclear warnings is insane. To blame Liz Truss is gaslighting at its finest.

The only person to blame for Putin threatening to destroy the planet os Putin himself.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 28/02/2022 14:04

Oh yes, this is a sign of Truss' very great brain.

No.

She's been promoted way above her capabilities and is an absolute liability.
