The man seems quite incredible. I didn’t know much about him until now but he seems incredibly brave and intelligent. Was just reading an article about how he has been tirelessly and successfully speaking to western leaders to get stiffer sanctions and support implemented, I really hope he remains safe.

A great example of what a leader should be IMO. I hope he stays safe.

Feeascotime · 01/03/2022 18:08

A hero in my eyes. However, I wish he would leave timeously to play a role going forward. His people need his leadership.

@SplashinginPuddles1

I think Boris is doing a good job so far and now is not a good time to be criticising him. Dangerous.
I'd say it's even more dangerous to say that we can't criticise him. That's how bad decisions get made though at a time like this I think you should be sure to praise when the government gets it right, and criticise constructively. Surely this shows that nothing is more precious than democracy?
TheSnowyOwl · 01/03/2022 18:11

He’s an actor and has his own production company, and a legal background. He’s putting all of his abilities to fantastic use by rallying his country and getting the majority of the world behind them. And yes, balls of steel. I very much hope Putin doesn’t kill him. His death would be more than just the death of a figurehead of state. He’s one of the few leaders who is actually leading in the midst of his people.

DH showed me some amazing clips of him participating in a ballroom dancing gala. Totally mesmerising. He clearly has it, in every sense of the word. Great that Fate dealt him out to Ukraine in these ghastly times.

ElIie · 01/03/2022 18:15

@Urbanisation No offence but it sounds like you have Boris Derangement Syndrome which is completely clouding your judgement and ability to be rational.

EmmaH2022 · 01/03/2022 18:15

I've seen a different link to that video elsewhere, which I think someone put up with a view to undermining him

All I could think was, not only is he beyond military fit, but he can even do it in high heels! So if it's an attempt to undermine, that totally didn't work!

iloveeverykindofcat · 01/03/2022 18:17

Look up his record on Israel/Palestine. He certainly hasn't shown much concern for the rights and safety of Palestinian children.

That said, he's a brave man. I respect his decision to stay with his people. I have no idea if its a smart decision, but no-one can call him a coward. Can you imagine Johnson in tactical gear, fighting to defend the capital. Like something out of a farce.

Urbanisation · 01/03/2022 18:17

@Ellie I'm sorry but I have no idea what you mean. Do you have a coherent argument?

zeldaonadreamcloud · 01/03/2022 18:17

Yes. His courage, his determination, his conviction. He's become one of my heroes. Him and all the Ukranians staying to fight.

The contrast between him and the cowardly leaders in Europe offering words and little else. He needs piloted planes, he needs troops, he needs action, not just words and some gifts.

The desperation in his voice as he tries to fight alone against the might of Russia - reduced to begging from a Europe too cowardly to fight. Its painful to watch.

He's right. What is the point of saying 'never again' when Europe is sitting back and allowing imperalistic land grabs. If we allow this, what is to stop other countries without democracy doing the same?

If we believe in the values of democracy and self-determination for countries we have to be prepared to fight for it.

Ronald Reagan was perceived as a fool and a lightweight by those outside of the US when he was elected

As time passes, his rating by academics puts him in the top quartile of US Presidents

The bravery of the whole country is awesome, OAPs and young people climbing over the tanks, and laying down in front of them is incredible. I hope this finishes Putin and his corrupt government

FantasticFebruary · 01/03/2022 18:23

@Trixiefirecracker

is he really the voice of Paddington Bear???!
Ukrainian version!! Yes.

Given his background he knows the power of good soundbite and a good picture. He's doing a good job in the circumstances. But I have most admiration for the soldiers and the normal men who have taken up arms.

Bouledeneige · 01/03/2022 18:24

I'm impressed and moved by his bravery too. Suzanne Moore captured it well I think in this article (though I wasn't so interested in the first couple of paragraphs about lefties).

@Urbanisation

You people are funny.
Not half as funny as you think you are. Go away and stop trying to derail this thread, you nasty, bitter individual.

Tbf, the competition isn't exactly sparkling.

Motherdare · 01/03/2022 18:27

reduced to begging from a Europe too cowardly to fight

That’s not a fair assessment. There is no appetite in Europe for a full-scale war with Russia. That would bring this terror to all our doors and I don’t think for a second any country’s population would support it. De-escalating the tragedy is the only way out.

Pumperthepumper · 01/03/2022 18:39

@Urbanisation I’m well aware he isn’t perfect. But he’s doing a good job just now, can we not just appreciate that?

KeepingAnOpenMind · 01/03/2022 18:40

When you think how quickly Afghanistan caved, the Ukrainian response seems remarkable. Good for Zelenksy and his citizens. It’s wonderful to see such courage from a leader. I imagine Boris and Biden would be peeing in their pants.

BoredZelda · 01/03/2022 18:41

Forget Paddington...

Wow! Dancing and acrobatics in heels, that takes some doing 😆

Let’s also not forget, this was the man who refused to do Trump’s bidding to dig up dirt on the democrats in order to receive the weapons and aid they had been promised by the US.

ThoseFestiveLights · 01/03/2022 18:41

YANBU - pretty sure he’s made me ovulate this week and I am definitely post-menopausal. Also great statesman etc. etc.

BoredZelda · 01/03/2022 18:43

A hero showing leadership doesn’t leave. And if he does he may well have no country to come back to.

MrsTommyS · 01/03/2022 18:44

I imagine the people of Ukraine are thankful that their president is standing tall and hasn’t scuttled off to some gold plated bunker as ours probably would do and for that I absolutely admire him!
