The man seems quite incredible. I didn’t know much about him until now but he seems incredibly brave and intelligent. Was just reading an article about how he has been tirelessly and successfully speaking to western leaders to get stiffer sanctions and support implemented, I really hope he remains safe.

@peaceanddove best thing I've ever read 😂

I spent ages trying to work out where I recognised him from (I'm not exactly an avid follower of Ukrainian politics usually) and it was only when I googled him that I realised I had seen him in Servant of the People on Netflix a couple of years ago.

He stars as a high-school history teacher who is unexpectedly elected President of Ukraine after a viral video filmed by one of his students shows him making a profane rant against government corruption in his country

After the show aired, he signed up to the Presidential elections as a bit of a joke - his policies were the same as the knes as his character from the show - and to get some publicity ... and then won with 70% of the popular vote.

He has apparently had a bit of a bad time recently as his popularity was waning in recent times due to the public apparently being unhappy that he wasn't seeming to actually carry out his policies but he has also always had great public presence and an ability to speak humbly, eloquently and always connect to his intended audience

Early on in his presidency he was addressing a group of politicians and he told them not to put pictures of him up in their office as head of state, instead put pictures of their children/grandchildren and when they are making decisions they should look at those pictures as a reminder of who will be most affected by the decisions they make in those offices.

The Russians will end his life unfortunately and he knows this. He will go down as a great leader. God Bless Zelensky and the Ukrainian people!!

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 28/02/2022 21:20

What a man! Honestly each morning when I wake up first thing I do is check the news to check he's OK... he's got a level of integrity were certainly not used to seeing. If we were in this situation, Boris would be first in the bunker.
Nothing but the most respect and concern for him.
That country is full of bad asses it seems though, his wife is apparently fighting too, celebs who come from Ukraine have gone back to fight. Normal civilians fighting- couldn't quite imagine it being the same here.
Grandmas putting together Molotov cocktails.

I wish they had more help right now to overcome Russia.

He's doing what he needs to but let's not get carried away here folks. He's head of a pretty repressive regime where a number of concerns are regularly recorded year on year re state actors participating in killing, torture, rape and assault, wrongful arrest, information blackout, dodgy cahoots with the Stans, prison brutality, targeting of ethnic minorities and LGBT people, suppression of protests etc.

Obviously it's right that we have international intervention now that the trouble on his borders has moved up a gear to outright invasion, but the guy is hardly a saint.

Could you tell me where you got this info? I’m interested!
Urbanisation · 28/02/2022 21:37

Ukraine human rights issues are well documented. You could try looking at UN, human rights watch, amnesty, US government monitoring etc reports, all the usual places you'd go for such.

A country in its infancy coming out of an incredibly oppressive regime. Give them a chance. Rome wasn't built in a day. They get through this, that country will flourish

He also features in the Pandora Papers and invests his offshore wealth in amongst other things the London property market. Secured his position in a closed list snap election. Likes a little bit of anti Armenian action. Isn't keen on Putin obviously, but adopts a similar attitude to his fiscal competitors as Putin does (denouncing them in parliament etc) although arguably stops short of killing them. Fucked up the covid response same as Putin and plunged Ukraine into recession as a result and despite promising to lower working people's taxes to alleviate their difficulties since reneged on that.

@MsTSwift

My kickboxing teacher follows the mayor of Kiev who is a former heavyweight boxing champion my crush has transferred to him
Have you seen his brother on (Celeb) Hunted (I think it was the German one)? WOW. Also a boxing champ and recently enlisted in the Ukrainian military to fight against Russia. Has contacts all over the world and uber rich yet staying to fight. They are all amazing.

You are very welcome x

" When he said "I don't need a ride,.."

I thought, that's a pity, let me know if you change your mind. But "ride" means something else here in Ireland.

DropYourSword · 01/03/2022 00:57

@alwayswrighty

Boris would be in his plush bunker munching Fois Gras

I'm not so sure about this. He maybe a bit if a buffoon but I actually think he could be a tough bastard if he needed to be.

Yeah, agreed. He'd definitely rough it with a Brie and grape focaccia if absolutely pushed.
SplashinginPuddles1 · 01/03/2022 01:07

I think Boris is doing a good job so far and now is not a good time to be criticising him. Dangerous.

Libertybear80 · 01/03/2022 01:13

I hope some people on here are just piss taking talking about fancying Johnson. If you're not then you need a shrink!

Chimchiminie · 01/03/2022 01:32

@ShittyFingers

Boris is a bit of a buffoon but I don’t think you can question his looks! There are lots of people who agree that he’s one of the most handsome PMs we’ve had.

Hahahahahahahahahaha

I think the takeaway from this can only be that we’ve slim pickings shitty
