Just that really. Sociopathic Patel refusing visas. In a time where we need leadership & empathy & intelligence there's a ducking idiot at the helm & Rees~Mogg making a fortune with insider trading.
Who the hell will admit to being so sociopathically selffish & grabby to still vote Tory?

@Luckydip1 Because it is proportionate

Is it? The scandi tax models and everywhere else would say it’s not. Let’s not forget over half of adults pay nothing. Distribution is fine - as long as it’s not you paying. Not enough adults pay tax in this country in comparison to other western countries. It’s the higher earners on PAYE being mugged to pay for everyone else. Not the billionaires and not those working their 16 hours.

Not it's not, the successful people pay a far higher percentage than the low earners, it is far from proportionate.

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2023 11:05

We seem to be in a country that resents success whereas in other countries they celebrate it, no wonder productivity is so low.

BIossomtoes · 23/10/2023 12:50

Every adult in this country pays tax. We have other taxes than income tax. VAT (the third highest taxation income stream) and fuel duty are both regressive taxes, disproportionately affecting the least well off.

Productivity is low because we have failed to invest in new technologies, employers using cheap labour instead of automation, those low earners then pay less tax.
Also people who earn little are hardly likely to want to work hard... would you for £11ph ? or just do the minimum?

a PP keeps going on about half the country pay little income tax, completely ignoring the reasons why.. they earn little.

You ll need to explain why you think anyone should be complaining if they take home £141k p.a, yet a carer should be grateful if they have to live on £16kp.a and have no or a v small pension?

As for not celebrating success? maybe, we seem to resent paying a Consultant £125k even though he/she may well save you or your childs life but apparently have no such problem paying a CEO £3m or £4m for doing so much more than the Consultant..... not.

SerendipityJane · 23/10/2023 13:17

Productivity is low because we are more than happy to treat "Influencer" as a valid career aspiration and promote roles "in finance" over STEM subject

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2023 13:35

@Alexandra2001 low productivity because we have a large proportion of the workforce not working and dynamic tech companies don't want to be based here because of our high taxes. When Ireland lowered their taxes lots of companies set up there. As for a carer earning less than a CEO, its because the salary is determined by market forces as we are in a capitalist country, its supply and demand. We should be offering massive tax incentives for companies to build EV cars and the gigafactories but we don't seem to be able to manage it. Looks like we will just continue our steady decline as a nation.

Stem subjects don’t pay enough. It works at both ends of the ladder. A decent stem graduate will quadruple their salary moving abroad.

UK corporation tax was lower than most comparable countries for years and it never brought a boom in companies moving here becuase it's only one aspect a business will consider.

You could offer the best corporation tax rates in the world and it won't entice anyone in if you've not got the workforce, infrastructure and market to make it worthwhile.

Why would you move your EV production to the UK to save 5-10% on corporation tax if it's going to cost you twice as much to export the product into Europe or take 5 times as long to get the parts to your assembly line?

And of course why would anyone invest in EVs, battery tech, renewables, etc in the UK when the government have proven to be unsupportive of it?

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2023 14:02

@Thebestwaytoscareatory ok, how would you boost productivity?

MarshaBradyo · 23/10/2023 14:09

Low corporation tax worked a treat in ROI

It was more a last resort though as it was way back in the 90s that Apple said give us lower tax or we’ll leave.

And from there multinationals helped build the current surplus.

That we still attract corporations at a higher rate is good. Also it’s changing for multinational as ROI has signed up to OECD lowest figure of 15%

Projected reduction but not as much as it would be if they were undercut of course. A more level playing field will help them. Plus smaller turnover will stick at 12.5%

Enterthewolves · 23/10/2023 14:21

@Luckydip1 I don’t think you understand, it isn’t the same but is fair

I do understand, all these people moaning about successful people paying tax when they hardly pay anything at all, how about thank you for keeping this country going as their contribution is negligible, that is if they can be bothered to work at all.

Precisely, great example, the workforce has grown around these companies and upskilled so it is a virtuous circle. Better workforce attracts more companies and so on.

Gellhell · 23/10/2023 14:43

Agree op. But I also think that Starmer is controlled opposition so we are fucked.

I mean, you've got to hand it to @beachcitygirl

This thread has made it abundantly clear who still thinks voting Tory is a good idea.

beachcitygirl · 23/10/2023 19:42

@Gellhell I couldn't agree more.

I'm lucky I'm in Scotland with the bloody wonderful Humza Yousaf running the show. Although of course what happens to our budgets etc will depend on what happens down south.
Previously Labour were my second team if you like but Sir Kid Starver is just a Tory in a red tie.

Its desperate.

But even if you think he's a Tory in a red tie he's still got one up on the current lot who you can't even count as Tory, they've gone so far off the scale.

beachcitygirl · 23/10/2023 20:21

Absolutely accurate @Zonder - I couldn't agree more.

the current Tories appear more like the EDL or Farage UKIP by the minute.
